Faith (Aqeedah)
■What do people mean by the word FAITH?
AQEEDAH: definition and explanation
■ Aqeedah – singular / Aqaaid – plural
■ Linguistically - derived from the word A Q D ■ ع ق ع ق ي د ة
■ Means adherence, certainty, and affirmation
■ The things which people’s hearts affirm and believe in i.e. the things they accept (as true)
■ These are matters which are held as certain beliefs with no doubt
Belief without Doubt
■ It means - The firm belief that one's heart is fixed upon without any doubt.
The answer
■ These are the "pillars" of the faith. ■ You have to know and understanding and
implement what is described.■ The Scholars of Aqeedah call this great
subject
■ "the root of the religion"
The verse of Aqeedah
■ Find the verse that Allah tells us about what to believe in
■ The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His books, and His messengers. (They say), “we make no distinction between one another of His messengers” and they say, “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all) [Quran 2:285]
Issues of Aqeedah are Unseen
■ Muslims are required to believe in ■ Unseen matters■ Not visible, not tangible things■ E.g. Prophets and Messengers and revelation, the
hereafter – unseen matters■ Allah praises the believers in the Quran
■ Who believe in the unseen (Ghayb) ….■ Ghayb means a thing not seen not only about
beliefs but also news of the past, the future, about creation, heavens & earth .
Relationship between Aqeedah and faith (eeman)
■ Aqeedah is the foundation of eeman
■ Eeman is 2 parts:1. Acknowledge that Allah exists2. Adhere to the ways laid down by Allah

■Inseparable and go hand in hand
Beliefs in Islam
• Allah• Angels• Revealed Books• Prophets• Last Day• Divine Will and Predestination
First belief
■The first principle of Aqeedah is belief in Allah
What is the meaning of the word “Allah”?
➢ Translation is “The God”➢ Meaning is “The Only One to
Worship”➢ Root word is A-li-ha
ALLAH
➢ Most precious name of God
➢ Not a descriptive name like other 99 names
➢ Name of God's own presence
➢ Name had existed before Adam
➢ Same God worshipped by ALL prophets
What is in the Quran?

What is in the Quran about Allah
➢ Allah says in the Quran of himself, his essence (spirit), names, attributes, actions
➢ His names and attributes – 10,062 times➢ Calls us to worship Him alone➢ Commands us to obey Him➢ Assures the people who believe in Him of
the reward of paradise (opposite is true)➢ Tells us about the people of faith
Attributes which define who Allah is
➢ Allah has an essence (Dhaat)● His spirit is perfect and is far above any faults
of shortcomings. ● “ …the Ever living, the One who sustains and
protects all that exists. ….Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes him… (2:255 – Ayatul Qursi)
● He does not give birth and He was not given birth to (112:1-4)
• Corrects the Nicene creed of “..Jesus is God from God,…Son only begotten…”
Allah has a “Self”
His has a “Self” (not like the selves of humans) in a manner that befits His perfection and Majesty
Jesus peace be upon him said to Allah:
“…You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in yours; truly, You, only You, are the All-knower of all that is hidden (5:116)
When he talks to Moses..
➢ To Moses (Peace be upon him) he says:
● “….And I have chosen you, for myself”
His rising over the throne
➢ In the Quran, Allah refers in 7 verses the rising to His throne “Al-Arsh”● The Most Gracious (Allah) rose over the
throne (in a manner that suits His majesty)● Homework No 2…. Find the verse that says
that!➢ Throne is above the 7th heaven➢ He declares to be the “Lord of the
throne”
What else about Allah?
➢ He Laughs and Rejoices➢ He Speaks when he wills
● ..And to Moses Allah spoke directly (4:164)➢ He Spoke to Adam and Eve
● ….And their Lord called out to them…(7:22)➢ He Loves
● …Verily Allah Loves those who act justly…(5:42)➢ He Hates and has anger
● E.g. to corruption and mischief➢ The greatness of his Knowledge, Vision, and
Hearing of Allah (42:11, 22:61, 20:46)
The word “al-mu’minun” - believers
➢ Word “eeman” is cited in the Quran:● In conjunction with the phrase “righteous
work”•“Indeed those who have belief and do righteous works..” (2:277)
