Performance Criteria: Term Project: Each student is required
to develop a mechatronic system as a term project. A one-page abstract describing the system is due on Wednesday, January 16.
The analysis for the topics covered by the mid-term exam are to be turned in on the day of the mid-term exam, along with the exam. Students will be evaluated using the rubric in the class syllabus.

ECE 5850 24
Performance Criteria: The final project, including a paper describing
the project, the source code, and the executable code is due on ??, at the time the final exam is turned in. In addition to the topic analyses, the paper should include an Introduction (citing the relevant background), a discussion of the Results, a discussion of your Conclusions, and a Bibliography. The grading rubric for the final project is included in the course syllabus. The term project will account for 40% of the grade.

Mechatronics
The synergistic integration of fine mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in the design of products and manufacturing processes.

![Page 27: Lec 1 7th Jan 2013](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051214/55cf97d1550346d03393cf7d/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Why Make Prototypes?
The first iteration usually has significant flaws and oversights
The designer needs to learn from this in order to make the second iteration
As iterations continue, changes between iterations become less substantial and the iteration becomes closer to the final product
ECE 5850 27
![Page 28: Lec 1 7th Jan 2013](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051214/55cf97d1550346d03393cf7d/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Build or Simulate?
The choice depends upon the circumstances of the project
For early iterations of a project, often simulations will reveal design flaws with less outlay of time and money

Soldering
Make sure you read and pay attention to the tips that Carryergives in section 29.5.4
Engineers often assume that soldering is easy and requires no training
This is not the case – many projects fail for the lack of good solder joints!

I have personally dealt with most of the suppliers listed in section 29.6
They are all good, reliable, and not overly expensive
