Lebanese wines speak a beautiful language.

We come here, to Denmark, to share some of the beautiful stories about Lebanon — a small but great country whose wine heritage extends from Mount Lebanon all the way to the Bekaa Valley, and from the Batroun region towards the South.

The success of the Lebanese wine days, which we have organized in different countries around the world, has enabled the international wine industry to have a better appreciation of Lebanon’s rich history and has created new and serious opportunities to expand into the markets of Europe, America and beyond.

We, the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, are committed to continuing the advancement of this sector until Lebanese wines reach the far corners of the world, carrying with them the culture and generosity of Lebanon. Louis Lahoud Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture

Lebanon is recognized as one of the first countries in the world to make and trade wine, a revolution credited to the Canaanites — later known as the Phoenicians — whose merchant ships spread wine culture throughout the Mediterranean basin and further afield. This tradition has continued for thousands of years. Today, Lebanon’s terroir and ancient winemaking heritage have spurred great interest in its wines, particularly over the past few years. Increasingly, consumers are appreciating the unique characteristics of Lebanese wines. Reds are powerful — offering ripe, spicy fruit flavors balanced by good acidity. Whites express freshness and characterful depth. These qualities convey Lebanon’s terroir. A tiny country bordering the Mediterranean Sea, two-thirds the size of Connecticut, its vineyards are among the highest in altitude of any in the Northern Hemisphere, averaging over 3,000 to almost 6,000 feet. Lebanon’s quintessentially warm Mediterranean climate combined with cool nighttime temperatures that high elevations bring, abundant limestone and clay soils, and proximity to the sea, offer conditions for vines to thrive. The accumulation of these growing factors fosters wine production of a wide range of styles, from easy drinking blends to more complex wines suitable for aging. Lebanon is part of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is experiencing something a renaissance among wine professionals and consumers. Christy Canterbury, Master of Wine, says: “Lebanon defies traditional wine wisdom in many ways. Its high altitude trumps its lower latitude, and its ancient wine history blends with the influence of French winemaking traditions and modern-day, Middle Eastern sensibility. Today, there stands a strong industry replete with an array of wine styles, as diverse as the personalities behind the bottles.” Lebanese Wine Day provides a unique platform of discovery, providing insight into Lebanon’s rich wine heritage and the younger wineries on the scene. It is the first event on this scale to take place in Denmark.

Lebanon experiences over 300 days of sunshine each year and plentiful rainfall (32 inches per year on average during the winter). Dry conditions during the growing season and frequent sea and mountain breezes keep the use of pesticides (if any) and other treatments to a minimum, with no irrigation or acidification. Bekaa ValleyIn the heart of the country, the Bekaa is a fertile plateau irrigated by the Litani River and is the largest agricultural area in Lebanon. It is within the Bekaa’s 1,550 square miles that 80% of Lebanon’s wine production takes place. At 3,000 feet above sea level, the high altitude plain has a dry, continental climate with a strong thermal contrast between hot summers and cold winters, when snow is common. The spring and summer seasons are typified by warm days and cool nights and the vine adapts to the low vigor, stony and/or steep terrain, delivering wines with intensity and complexity. The NorthSmall hills and limestone ridges carved by erosion characterize the Batroun region, which is located in North Lebanon. Vineyards extend between 1,000 and 3,300 feet above sea level on average and enjoy a more Mediterranean climate, where summers are hot (sometimes humid) and winters are mild. Vineyards in this region benefit from gentle sea breezes that pass through the interior valleys, bringing freshness both to the summer nights and the wines of the region. Central and southern regions – Mount Lebanon & JezzineThe massif of the central region, known commonly as Mount Lebanon, tilts slowly south, rising to just under 10,200 feet. The climate is Mediterranean, but the altitude (3,000 feet on average, up to nearly 6,000) plays a major role, resulting in milder summers and wet winters. Snow appears quickly, from 4,000 feet above sea level, often persisting on the highest peaks of the region. This semi-permanent snow cover and the karstic retention make this mountain a huge water reservoir.

FACTS ABOUT LEBANON’S VINEYARDS AND WINE PRODUCING REGIONS

With an average altitude of 2,600 to 3,300 feet, southern Lebanon has a temperate climate. This area is irrigated by a multitude of streams or groundwater sources including soil, which is at times sandy and at others chalky clay. It is distinguished by a relatively strong presence of limestone. The microclimate is characterized by good rainfall, average humidity and frequent windy spells. Wines from these regions tend to be gentle and rounded, with greater mineral freshness.

Lebanon may be one of the oldest sites of winemaking but today its winemakers want to deliver the perfect expression of how an ancient land can produce authentic and exciting wines for the modern palate. The country is blessed with an ability to use a wide range of varieties – both international and indigenous – to make wines with an unmatched range of styles for all tastes and occasions. As Tim Atkin, Master of Wine, said during a visit in 2010, “Lebanon quite possibly makes the best wine you’ve never drunk.”

Aurora wines have been produced from the estate’s vineyards in the Northern Mediterranean mountains at 900m above sea level. The family-owned winery was established in 2006. The name Aurora has been inspired from Aoura, the village in which the vines have been grown, as well as “l’aurore” the first light in the sky before sunrise; the dawn. The vines have been carefully handpicked and the vineyards have always been dryfarmed since the start.

Our aim is to produce wines that express the terroir of their origin. Surrounded by a wilderness of oak and olive trees, these wines have come to express exquisite freshness from the altitute, and a mediterranean style due to its proximity to the sea. Today this family boutique winery has been led by the self taught winemaker who is also a full time Oncologist. It is driven by the owner and the family’s passion for producing special wines. Products include: 100% Pinot Noir, 100% Cabernet Franc, Chateau (Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), one Rosé produced from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, and two whites, one 100% Chardonnay, and one 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Nestled in the heart of Khenchara in Mount Lebanon, the terroir of the Saint Jean Monastery is rooted between the sea and the mountain, thus benefiting from the mildness of the Mediterranean climate. It is with respect and meticulousness that the monks of Saint John strive to viniculture and vinification to transform these red, white and rosé wines into «divine wines» with a particularly unique and sacred taste.

The story began in 1720 when the monks developed their first «sweet wine», at a time when Lebanon was under the Ottoman occupation that prohibited the production of alcohol, except for religious purposes. To accompany the oenological evolution and to meet the international requirements of winemaking, the winery was renewed and modernized in 2006, according to scientific and professional standards, while keeping the monastic tradition of the Monastery of Saint Jean, which manifests itself at the very first sip.

It was established in 2009, and it is the owner of the winery in Barka, known as Chateau BARKA. Consequently, it has succeeded in speedily proving its solid ground as a company run by a professional team of experts.Vigna Verde (s.a.r.l.) is not merely a financial enterprise; it is a company which bears a comprehensive humanitarian vision that aims at altering a handful of misconceptions prevailing in the Barka region. As a result, our company’s influences have manifested themselves on multiple levels following the establishment of our winery.Barka is a small village in the northern area of the Bekaa valley – Lebanon, where wine has been produced since thousands of years witnessed by the remaining sculptures of the famous roman temples of Baalbeck. Our wines are produced from grapes cultivated in the highest area of vineyards in altitude in the middle east, which gives them in addition to the sloppy drainy soil and sun exposure a very special character and identity. In this special exhibition, we are pleased to launch our new red product Barka-Ishtar named after the Phoenician Godess of fertility and love, this wine is a blend of Cabernet sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot partially aged in oak barrels and rich in flavors and aromas of the eastern mountains of the Mediterranean sea.

Château Cana is the story of a man who converted a forgotten land into a vineyard at the very heart of Mount-Lebanon, in a small village called Ras El Harf. After the Lebanese civil war, many families left the region and their lands. Fadi Gerges, a dentist and also an avid Human Rights activist with a passion for wine went on an exciting adventure: turning the abandoned lands into vineyards. The aim of this project was to encourage the families of around 30 villages to come back to their homes. So, each year, Fadi picked the grapes and shared his experience with the villages’ families, raising their awareness on the process of grapes planting and picking. Naturally, as time went by, Fadi became a winemaker, accumulating over 18 years of expertise in the field. In 2018, this family owned winery welcomed the 3rd generation on board. Both the old and the new generation are working hand in hand to preserve the legacy while growing and expanding by embarking on new journeys together.

Château Fakra, situated in Kfardebian valley in Kesrouan, Mount Lebanon, is one of Lebanon’s most popular producers and named after the Roman temples of Fakra in Kesrouan Mountains, where, in ancient times, wines were dedicated to the Gods of Wine and Love; to Dionysos (Bacchus) and Astarte (Venus). Château Fakra came to add an innovative approach to a millenary wine industry. Upon his return from Argentina, in 1982, the owner, Dr. Carlos Guillermo Adem expanded his hobby towards the wine industry by creating Château Fakra that entered the wine market with high standards and an astonishing outcome. Splendid vineyards, with ideal terroir conditions, the combination of the soils of fertile Bekaa Valley and Mount Lebanon, a professional vitioeno follow up and oak aging gave birth to a collection of premium Lebanese wines. Château Fakra increased its international brand awareness by participating in worldwide contests that crowned our selection with more than one hundred medals and awards confirming the excellency of our wines.

CHATEAU KEFRAYA

Invitation to the heart of the Phoenician vineyard, Château Kefraya carries the thousand-year expression of our mosaic of terroirs, on a tectonic rift at 1,100 m of altitude.

In this same Lebanese West Bekaa - more than 4000 years ago - our Phoenician ancestors cultivated the vine and spread wine culture around the Mediterranean sea.

Château Kefraya is the only vineyard that emerged during the Lebanese civil war (1975-90) thanks to the vision and perseverance of its founder Michel de Bustros.

The rift that crosses the vineyard results in a great diversity of its terroirs composed of micro-parcels, whose grapes are harvested by hand and vinified separately.

Committed to the welfare of nature and mankind, Château Kefraya adopts a sustainable agriculture.

Château Ksara, founded in 1857 by Jesuit Priests, is Lebanon’s oldest winery, preserving Lebanon’s rich wine making heritage for over 160 years and laying the foundations of the modern wine industry.

The Bekaa Valley has its own unique micro-climate, hot summer days and cool nights with generous of rainfall and snow in winter, with vineyards planted at between 1,000 – 1,600 m. The soil is non-homogenous clay and limestone.

These optimal conditions, which produce wines with freshness complexity and roundness, make the Bekaa one of the most important wine making regions in the world.

The wine gained its first international acclaim in 1979 at the Bristol wine fair where the eminent critic Michael Broadbent propelled Musar into the spotlight. Today, Château Musar is an internationally recognized brand exporting 85% of its production worldwide and members of the third generation are involved to continue this family business. The wines are produced with the family philosophy of natural winemaking and are split in three ranges: Château Musar : a rich and complex wine blend, Hochar Pere et Fils, and Musar Jeune which is fruity and modern. CHATEAU QANAFAR

Château Qanafar, established in 2005, is a small, family-owned winery located on the gently rolling hills at the base of the barouk mountain in Khirbet Qanafar, West Bekaa. Our 17 hectares of vineyards are located at 1,200m above sea level, allowing a dramatic swing in temperature variation between night and day. This means our grapes naturally maintain a wonderful balance between flavor and sugar levels while retaining a crisp acidity. The resulting wine is well-structured, rich and complex with intense flavor of fruit. The vineyard soil, consisting primarily of limestone, is ideally suited for growing quality grapes. We follow a simple doctrine: grow great fruit and respect it from berry to bottle. The winemaker’s rôle is to shepherd the quality of the fruit into the bottle, preserving the natural flavors and aromas rather than trying to «create» a wine. Our wines embrace the palate to produce a pleasurable and memorable experience.

Coteaux du Liban is a family-run winery, from the Bekaa Valley. Founded in 1999 by the late Nicolas Abou-Khater, who passes away tragically in a car accident in 2009. His wife Roula took over the winery with the help of her son, Roland. Although she is not a wine expert (she is a pianist and a musicologist), her work is driven by a deep passion that she somehow inherited from her husband. With her son, they are both now committed to producing wines that showcase the beauties of the Bekaa’s terroir. In summary, they respect the principle of letting the terroir do most of the work and finally apply the family’s touch to produce unique wines. The Bekaa Valley has a unique climate, soil and terroir, all of which play a decisive role in the elegant, balanced, harmonious and favor-drenched wines produced at Coteaux du Liban. The family is now engaged in producing wines with the most environment responsible practices. They are also committed to show a true image of Lebanon and Lebanese resilience within each bottle of wine. Coteaux du Liban exports %90 of their production, mainly to Europe, with a strong presence in France, UK, Germany and Benelux.

LES VIGNES DU MARJE

Les Vignes Du Marje is A new brand of wine launched in Dec 2018. We are a product of a long dream that has finally become a reality. The first of its generation and the first of the deep Southern lands, we are proud to introduce a different taste and concept from the land of stones, the heart of gold, and the meadow of springs, Marjeyoun.

Located in the South of Lebanon, Marjeyoun is a town of warm and temperate climates. Since the winter months are rather rainy, and the summer months are warm, we are left with an ideal climate for the growth and development of our grapevines. With the fertile vineyards of Jdeidet Marjeyoun, watered by the Litany River, we bring to you our five wines: Le Vin Du Marje (Rouge, Blanc, & Rose) and Le Rouge Du Marje Red 2013 ( Limited Release) and Couvent De M (Red Chateau, 2013 Our premier and Grand Cru).
