Learning to Surf
The quote, “Y ou can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf,” (Kabat-Zinn)
popped up on my cell phone screen the other day. It
got me thinking about how much resiliency we all
need to make our way through the literal and
figurative waves we encounter throughout our life
course. Thankfully we don’t always crash, but
surely we all can be caught off balance by the sands
shifting underneath our feet and the waves washing
around us.
It seems to me that the best surfers among us
embrace their advancing age and find opportunities
for joy, adventure and fulfillment at every corner.
They are balanced, content and happy. Perhaps it is
their weekly exercise routine, volunteer work, yoga
class or regular lunch with friends that make the
difference. Maybe they have downsized, moved to
be near family, or have even begun a new and
fulfilling relationship after the loss of a spouse.
Making these positive choices are truly what builds
resilience when a wave catches us. It is much
easier to get up and go with the surf when other
parts of life are in a good place.
But what of those who have not learned to surf?
Ignoring aches and pains, not making plans to enjoy
retirement, not knowing how to downsize or being
unable to keep a large house in working order are
all things that can cause an older adult to crash and
lose a piece of their independence. Some of us
equate stubbornness or “I’ll do it my way”
behaviors with being independent. But in my mind,
that is just faulty thinking. An independent senior
is one who knows when to ask for help and who has
made a plan for aging in place. I want to encourage
those of you who have not learned how to surf to
dive in. It’s not too late to find out how you can
live well even as time marches on.
The good news for Beverly seniors is that the
Senior Center offers many of the very activities,
lectures and services that can help you learn to surf!
Here you will meet kindred souls and new friends
who are also learning how to be resilient and to be
masters of healthy aging. We can support your ef-
forts to enjoy each day and help when you find
yourself needing support. I have met so many in-
spirational older folks in the course of my work
here at the Senior Center. The surfers among us are
quite remarkable!
Speaking of remarkable, there is still time to
nominate a Beverly senior for the annual “Senior of
the Year” award. This should be someone who is
active, engaged and enjoying all that Beverly has to
offer. It is a person who embraces their age and
contributes to their community in meaningful ways.
Nomination forms are available at the Senior
Center and are due on June 8th.
I hope to see you soon,
MaryAnn Holak, Director

How Is Your Oral Health?
Oral health is an an important aspect of wellbeing that can often be over-
looked. The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) says that nutrition, socia-
bility, self-image, mental health, and physical health are all linked with one’s
oral health, so it is important to maintain a healthy mouth! A key component to staying
healthy is knowledge of proper preventative care, and some tips provided by
the GSA for maintaining a healthy mouth are listed below:
Using Powered Tooth-
brushes
Benefits include less wrist movement, larger handles, and rapid
rotation for removing plaque
Choosing the Right
Toothpaste
Most people can use a basic fluoride toothpaste, but if needed,
individuals can use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth or dry
mouth
Using Floss Flossing helps prevent tissue inflammation and dental decay
Choosing the Right
Mouth Rinse
Fluoridated rinses provide more protection for older adults at risk
for dental decay, but other rinses are made specifically for dry
mouth or other conditions
Practicing Proper
Denture Care
Dentures should be brushed twice every day with a denture brush
and denture cleaner or soap and water, then soaked in denture
solutions or diluted acids and then rinsed
Seeking Professional
Dental Care
Routinely see your dentist, which is normally twice a year or more
if recommended
