Learning Targets
Characteristics of Student-Friendly Learning Targets
• Learning/achievement targets, not activities• Written in “I will” or “I can” format• Written in simple and age-appropriate language will
make sense to your students • Free of technical jargon- i.e. concepts that may be
unfamiliar to students are explained in familiar terms
• Specific enough that students can tell what they’re trying to achieve and when they’ve achieved it
Example: “I can write a personal narrative. This means I will write a true story about an experience from my life.”

Formative Assessment: Whip it!
Formative Assessments
If we have a balance of formative and summative assessment, aligned with effective learning targets, students will show growth in their learning.
Making the Connection
Formative Assessments
I can explain how using formative assessments will help both the teacher and the students.I can weave assessment for learning practices into daily teaching and assessment activities.

Formative Assessments
KRS 158.6453 defines formative assessment as a process used by teachers and students during instruction to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes. Formative assessments may include the use of commercial assessments, classroom observations, teacher-designed classroom tests and assessments, and other processes and assignments to gain information about individual student learning.

“When the cook tastes the soup, that’s formative assessment; when the
customer tastes the soup, that’s summative
assessment.”
