Spiders vs ButterfliesWhat’s the difference between a spider and a butterfly? How many legs does a butterfly have, and can a spider fly?! In this workshop from Mini Professors, we’ll look at the difference between arachnids and insects, and make our own ants and spiders with modelling clay. We then use a Venn diagram to help categorise these differences.

Enjoy a science adventure on our KS1 day, where we take a look at our bodies and how they work, explore changing states through the medium of ice cream, and go on a holiday to the Moon! Each school takes part in all three workshops.

Ted’s Moon AdventureTed the bear wants to go on holiday to the Moon. But he’s not quite sure what to pack or what he’ll see when he gets there. In this interactive show from Royal Observatory Greenwich, you’ll learn about what astronauts need for their missions and how craters on the Moon are formed.

Digestion and RespirationTake a look at two vital organ systems in our bodies, how they work and the various parts, in this workshop from Mini Professors. Get hands-on, replicate the processes involved in the digestive system (and, yes, the end result!) and make a working model lung to take home.

Changing States - Making Ice CreamHelp Dr Jo Science Solutions make ice cream in a bag! Explore states of matter (solids and liquids), changing states (freezing and melting), reversible and irreversible changes and then enjoy the fruits of your labour! Kitchen science at its finest. Mysterious MoonsWe’ve been searching the planets for signs of life but maybe we’ve been looking in the wrong place – perhaps we should be searching the moons in our Solar System? Journey through the Solar System on a hunt for life beyond Earth, with Royal Observatory Greenwich. Through this interactive and action-packed show full of multi-sensory demonstrations, learn what life needs to survive and discover why it might be better to search for life on moons rather than planets!

Science of FlightHow does gravity work? How do humans defy gravity? Can we fly in space? Why can flight be a drag? Discover the science behind why things fly, with Jon Chase of Rap Science. Explore the basics of flight using practical activities to investigate the main forces involved, through rhymes and demos. Jon unfolds the basics of aerodynamics, using practical activities to investigate thrust, drag, lift and gravity.

In this workshop, you’ll play with an ingenious little device called Makey Makey that allows us to connect everyday items like fruit, playdoh, marshmallows and more to a computer! But, do they conduct enough electricity to allow us to make music? This is a lively science and computing workshop for KS2 students that teaches the principles of circuits, resistance and conductivity. As well as the workshop, students receive a guided tour of the Centre for Computing History, and get time to enjoy the fun hands-on museum.

Practical Principles of Flight

Take the principles of flight paper aircraft challenge with RAF Marham. The session starts with an interactive discussion about what makes an aircraft fly, and lift, weight, thrust and drag are demonstrated. Students find out about the effects of wing shape, aircraft balance, and then build their own paper aircraft using the knowledge gained. The session culminates in a flying competition to find the best model aircraft.

Building Brick Satellites

Learn how real satellites are designed and built in this hands-on workshop from Raptor Aerospace. Using custom LEGO bricks, design and build your own satellite based on the rules and technical constraints real spacecraft designers have to follow.

This topical workshop from The Royal College of Pathologists gives sixth formers the chance to explore and discuss medical ethics with pathologists and scientists, allowing them to share their views on controversial topics such as organ donation and consent, the use of human tissue in research, consent for autopsies and medical research involving babies and children. Led by consultant pathologist Professor Mark Wilkinson, this session is particularly valuable for students interested in medical or biomedical degrees.

Discover how to connect motors to a Raspberry Pi computer and create the very basics of a moving robot. Using Python, you’ll learn the code needed to operate the motors. The Youth STEMM Award (YSA) provides a focused and engaging framework for young people aged 13–19 to further their passion, knowledge and skills in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine).

Explore the strange and magical properties of matter, with fireballs, fire tornadoes and amazing chemical reactions. TV astronomer and author Mark Thompson has been enthralling audiences for over 20 years with his fascinating journeys around the universe. Now he is turning his infectious enthusiasm to things a little closer to home with this spectacular show. Mark, a regular face on Good Morning Britain, Five News and an established author, was also co-presenter of the original series of BBC’s Stargazing Live.

Children’s UniversityNorwich Science Festival supports Norfolk Children’s University to provide memorable and high-quality learning experiences designed to inspire and raise aspirations, ambitions and achievements. Young Comms TeamEach year we offer the chance for young people to get involved with science communication at Norwich Science Festival. This year we’re teaming up with the Young Norfolk Arts Trust to offer training in science communication and recording and evaluation of NSF events.
