“ I wanted to get a qualification to be ready to go back to work when my children are all at school. I am quite driven, I know what I want and I know what I need. I do all my college work in college - because I am so busy with the children I need to keep it separate. I can do it quite easily.”

Ellie Richardson - Mother of four (11, 5, and 2-year-old twins)Course - Business NVQ Level 3

Find out about feesFees are not shown in this directory as they can vary depending on your age, previous qualifications, circumstances and the level and type of course you want to take. Reductions may also apply if you are in receipt of certain allowances and benefits. Evidence of any benefits may be required at the time of enrolment. Fees may also be paid in instalments - see page 22. Please contact an Information Advisor on 01493 655261 (option1) to discuss your individual circumstances.

NEW! 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

There’s also a new loan scheme from 1 August 2013 for further education courses, similar to the loans university-level students have had previously. If you’re 24 and over and taking a Level 3 or higher course you do have to pay for your course, but you can take out a loan to cover the fees upfront (over £300). You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course - you can pay for some of it yourself if you prefer.

Paying it back - You won’t have to make any loan repayments until you’re earning at least £21,000 a year and, even then, repayments and interest rates are low. Call or email us for more information, or see the Government’s website at www.gov.uk/24_advanced_learning_loans or the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan page on our website www.gyc.ac.uk.

Making a change...

“Changing careers was the best move I ever made.”

Switching careers and returning to college was a big risk for Victoria Smith who was doing well in her career as a travel agent. But she took the plunge anyway, enrolling on to a beauty therapy course at Great Yarmouth College.

The year after, Victoria won the UK gold medal in WorldSkills UK at the Birmingham NEC and recently she also won the title of Young Adult Learner of the Year 2013 for the Eastern Region.

After she completes her Level 3 qualification, Victoria, 22, is looking to using her new skills to travel the world working on board luxury cruise ships.

You don’t necessarily have to attend college to gain the qualifications that employers want.

If you’re at work, we offer NVQs that will demonstrate your level of competence to your employer, and provide a boost for your CV and future career prospects. You’ll build a portfolio of evidence of your skills, with a dedicated assessor to guide and support you through the process. Your employer may help with the cost of gaining the qualification, or you may be able to apply for a 24+ loan - see page 4.

As an enrolled student at the college, you will be able to take advantage of all its facilities, including our state-of-the-art gym, join in with social activities and benefit from further advice and guidance just like people attending the college for their study.

See pages 13-15 for listings of courses delivered in the workplace.

Steven Knight owns an aerial firm and decided to return to college to qualify as an electrician to widen his skills base.

Steven runs his business around his college hours.

Making a change...

“If you are not educated, you’re not going anywhere.”

Steven KnightCourse - Diploma in Electronic Engineering

“My partner returned to college to do an Access course in Life Sciences and is now studying for a degree at uCS Ipswich, so I decided it was my turn now. She won Student of the Year on her course and I joked I was going to win it too.”

“ I decided to do the qualifications now because I don’t want to be climbing up on roofs when I get older and electrical seemed the obvious choice because I have gained a lot of knowledge in my job.”

Did you know you can study for a university level qualification at Great Yarmouth College?

Research shows that people with degrees and other HE qualifications earn more over their lifetime than those without these qualifications. Our courses give you an opportunity to study close to home and over a longer period, to fit in with your other commitments.

Our HE courses are all jointly validated by the Universities of East Anglia and Essex. They are delivered by UCS Great Yarmouth (University Campus Suffolk) which is located at the college and has other centres in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Otley as well as its main campus in Ipswich.

The high quality courses range from Foundation Degrees to postgraduate qualifications in a diverse range of subject areas:

• Arts, Fashion & Textiles• Counselling• Early Years• Media• Music• Social Care• Sport

Visit www.ucs.ac.uk to find out more about these courses and how to apply

Higher Education

“At UCS Great Yarmouth I feel I get real value for money. I get more or less one-to-one tuition and I can always get to use the dark room and other facilities. It is so different to a large institution where you are one of many.”

Making a change...

“ I had been working for more than 30 years full time and I was getting to the point when I wanted a change... I love learning new things so keep doing courses here.”

Anne-Mie BrockCourse - Sugarcraft

“ I am really enjoying the course. I particularly enjoy the design aspect of electrical installation – the circuit design especially.”

Callum Harvey

Anne-Mie Brock turned skills she learned at an evening class at Great Yarmouth College into a new career and an award-winning business. The former sales and health and safety manager now runs a fast-expanding business making and decorating cakes from her Bradwell home.

The idea for her business - called Time4Cakes - started after she took an evening class in sugarcraft at Great Yarmouth College. The course changed her life. She started making cakes to sell and as her orders grew, she was confident enough to quit her corporate life and full-time job with a printing company and concentrate on turning her hobby into a successful business.

She is still taking evening courses at the college to expand her skills.

Anne- Mie’s commitment to learning was recognised when she won Adult Learner of the Year in the college’s Further Education awards earlier this year.

FuTurESIn the course listings on pages 6-10 you’ll see the symbol F beside some courses. This means they are part of our exciting Futures programme. New courses and start dates are being added every day. Please contact us for the latest information.

Callum Harvey, pictured, gained 13 GCSEs at Cliff Park High School and A levels in art, biology, and psychology at sixth form, followed by a Foundation Diploma in Art at Wensum Lodge in Norwich. He was offered an unconditional place on an art degree at Norwich University of the Arts but decided to change direction and take a course in electrical installation instead. He is hoping to gain an Apprenticeship and eventually to work as a self-employed eletrician.

Ready to make a change?

“ I love coming to college. It is a bit of a break from the children and being ‘mum.’ I can be me here. It was a bit daunting coming back into learning... I didn’t think I’d be taken seriously because I wanted to work in a male-dominated area but I have always been taken seriously here.”
