LEARNING DISABILITIES A learning disability is something that

challenges a child developmentally. Common disabilities include:

Dyslexia an impaired ability to read and understand written language

Dysgraphia impaired written language such as printing and writing

Dyscalculia difficulty learning math concepts (such as quantity, place value, and time), difficulty memorizing math facts, difficulty organizing numbers, and understanding how problems are organized on the page

Dysfluency hesitations repetitions omissions or extra sounds in speech patterns stuttering or stammering

RATE OF OCCURRENCE AND CAUSE Between 8% and 10% of children under

18 in the U.S. may have some type of learning disability.

Genetic Disorders No known cause Diagnosed in elementary school

BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS

Talking later than expected

Slow to learn new words

Confusing small words, such as "at" and "to."

Reversing the

shapes of written letters such as "d" for "b." For

example, the child

may write "dat"

instead of "bat."
