Learning Centre Leaders’ Newsletter 27th July 2018 Early Years Learning Centre Welcome back to Term 3, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. This term we have quite a number of exciting events coming up with Science week in week 5, Book Week in week 6 and Literacy and Numeracy week in week 7. These education weeks are a wonderful celebration of learning for the students in a range of different curriculum areas. We have a number of incursions and special activities happening throughout these weeks so please keep a look out for invitations via SeeSaw. It is really important for our students to be at school everyday. If you know your child is unwell or has to be away for an appointment etc, please communicate this with your child’s classroom teacher. This semester the students in the Early Years will be participating in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) Inquiry based on a Wyndham City council project ‘Habitat Heros’. The students will be exploring animals in their habitats and exploring concepts of making good choices. They will then use their new learning to help plan, design and build a new habitat within the school grounds. We can’t wait to see where the students take this project. We are really excited for a really great term of learning. Amy Byrne, Early Years Team Leader

Middle Years Learning Centre LeaderWelcome to Term 3, we hope that everyone had a relaxing and refreshing break and that students have come back to school refreshed and ready to learn!

The Middle Years have gotten off to a great start with all students and classrooms across the school beginning the Habitat Heroes Inquiry which is being facilitated by the Wyndham Council. Habitat Heroes will be running over Semester two and students will be working hard to design and develop a real habitat at Warringa Park that will include and attract local flora and fauna. To build understanding of what habitats are and why they should be protected, students will be provided with lots of learning opportunities that explores habitats, plants, animals and much more. Students will be attending excursions at Werribee Zoo to see the animals in their habitats. How exciting!

Classes across the Middle Years are showing some amazing growth in their mathematics skills and are working very successfully towards achieving their learning goals. Students are learning to count and develop their number skills using lots of hands on materials, objects and games.

There are some important dates that are coming up in Term 2, please make sure that you are checking for notes in your child’s bag and notifications on Seesaw to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything.

BRC NewsIt has been great to see all students return to school settled and ready to start the new investigations teachers planned at the end of Term 2. We will be visiting the Wyndham Tech School throughout this semester to work on students’ creativity and design skills. This will be a great hub for learning with lots of expertise available for students and teachers.

Last week a number of BRC students walked to Woolworths Hogan’s Corner to distribute 40 reusable shopping bags that they made last term. The bags were very well received by customers and many commented on the high quality of the product.Ange, the store manager, emailed and said, “It was a pleasure having you and your students in the store today! Our customers loved it. Such a great idea! Keep up the awesome work”.

Students have chosen their new elective and social enterprise classes this week. If you would like to discuss your child’s class preferences please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES WESTERN MELBOURNE AREA

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new, national approach providing individualised support and services for people with disability. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

The NDIS commenced operation in some parts of the State on 1 July 2016 and will rollout progressively across the remainder of the State, Area by Area, until it is fully operational on 1 July 2019. Key information for Western Melbourne is as follows:

Area start date Local government areas Local Area Coordinator

1 October 2018 Hobsons Bay, Maribrynong, Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Wyndham

Brotherhood of St Laurence

Participants will transition to the NDIS based on where they live, not where they attend school.

Eligibility is focused on lifelong, functional impairment. NDIS eligibility information is available on the NDIS Access Checklist which is on the NDIS website.

There are two possible pathways for students with a disability to access the NDIS:

1. Students who are receiving specified disability programs or supports will have their details automatically provided to the NDIA. Your school will be able to advise you if your child is receiving one of these supports. These students may be contacted by the NDIA up to six months prior to their Area’s start date and invited to test their eligibility for the scheme.

2. Students who do not receive any of the specified programs or supports can directly contact either the NDIA or the NDIA Local Area Coordinator to test their eligibility. This can commence up to six months prior to their Area’s rollout date.

Further information Contact your NDIA Local Area Coordinator or the NDIA for information about the NDIS. Your school has also been provided with general information about the NDIS and what it means for students with disabilities.

From Nurse Nicole Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holiday so this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding

medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me. Please note:• All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.• If medication is being transported in student’s bag please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.

Drink Bottles: I encourage all parents to ensure their students bring a drink bottle to school. This enables staff to identify how much each child is drinking and therefore minimise any health effects that arise through not drinking enough, especially in the hotter months.

Spare Clothes: Please ensure your child has a spare set of clothes in their bags at all times. Change of underwear, socks, shorts/pants, T-shirt) for emergencies.

Donations: We welcome any school uniform donations especially tracksuit pants, shorts and t-shirts of all sizes. If you have spare school uniform/clothing that has been given to your student through the year, we would appreciate this to be returned to the school. Nicole
