Whether it’s a welcome back, or welcome for the first time, we aredelighted to offer a superb selection of summer courses to sample,before we bring out a fuller menu of learning and participationopportunities at mac in autumn – on sale from 1 July 2010.

We hope our new programme, introducing some familiar and manynew Artist Tutors, has something to offer everyone. There’s a variety of creative skills and interests available; whether a course, one off workshop, drop in activities, master-classes, art reviews or summer schools. For the more experienced, our Artist Passholder scheme, which provides independent access to our Visual Arts and Design Studios, will be available soon and we look forward to your applications and proposals from June onwards.

The new mac building has transformed our potential to enrich yourlearning experience, whether you enjoy the new accessiblechanging facilities, or take an animation class in our new Digital MediaStudio though, as ever, we remain open to new ideas – so please get intouch with the Learning team.

Visuality is all about developing your own personal visual language. Join artist Kate Tilley in an exploration of contemporary ceramic hand-building techniques from coiling and slab-work to making and using plaster press moulds. Experiment with a range of construction and surface decoration methods whilst deepening your knowledge of ceramic materials.

The potter’s wheel is an ancient tool which has been in use for around five thousand years to create objects of great beauty and practicality. The Artist Tutor will demonstrate basic techniques of throwing and turning forms on the wheel for bowls, vases or plates, alongside finishing techniques in decorating and glazing.

This is the first in a series of courses which will focus on different ceramic techniques and traditions from around the world. This term will explore South American pots and sculpture, covering basic hand building techniques including coiling and press moulding to create unusual vessels. Building each week, experiment through short projects and briefs, while learning to create three dimensional forms that draw influence from a range of manmade and natural objects.

Learn how to create 3D sculpted vessels and textured surfaces using natural wool and silk fibres. These fabulous textured felt and silk vessels can then be adorned with stitch or other decorative embellishments. Please bring along a sketchbook and a small variety of sewing and knitting yarns such as fancy or roving, buttons, beads, ribbons, shells or stones to add your own personal surface decorations.

Using a variety of materials such as gliding metal, copper, silver and silver clay you will be guided by an experienced practising jeweller. The course will provide you with a wealth of tips and background knowledge that is sure to tempt you into the world of jewellery.

If you already have a basic knowledge of jewellery making, then this course is for you!Professional jeweller Nick Greenhough will encourage you to extend and develop your existing skills as you work on individual projects. Nick will encourage you to try different processes such as granulation and casting techniques, making use of wax and resin whilst, offering many useful hints and tips of the trade.

If students decide to use precious metals, the cost is not included in the course. It may be necessary to purchase precious metals with guidance from the Artist Tutor. mac sells a basic kit of some metals and saw blades for the above courses.

From classical and street to contemporary and hip hop, this class blends dance styles together to form a fusion form of South Asian dance. Take inspiration from the East and refinement from the West as you perform dances choreographed using both the music and dramatic styles of Bollywood films.

Taking you through basic footwork, posture, hands, arms and short choreography this class will concentrate on the simpler, more light-hearted forms of flamenco dance such as tangos, rumbas and fandangos. This flamenco class will focus on improving techniques such as posture, footwork, arms and hands. The class will build up a repertoire of choreographies, which include more complicated forms such as bulerias, algrias and solea. The class will be accompanied by a guitarist.

This class offers an introduction to Hatha Yoga for complete beginners and is also suitable for those who prefer a more gentle approach to their physical practice. Artist Pass Scheme at mac Make mac your creative destination with our flexible Artist Pass scheme, offering affordable access to our Dance, Music & Visual Art & Design studios, developing your individual ideas and practice using our excellent new facilities.

mac’s Artist Pass is for creative individuals who are experienced and confident in their own practice, to work without guidance in our studios spaces - though you’re often sharing the workspace with others who can offer helpful advice!

Those with less experience who are interested in what the pass scheme has to offer can, after taking a course in discussion with their Artist Tutor, be recommended to apply to the scheme.

Bespoke learning at mac mac has a range of learning and participatory opportunities available. These include projects and workshop packages for schools and groups, which can take place onsite, in one of mac’s newly refurbished spaces or offsite.

Access We are committed to making mac fully accessible to everyone. mac has a level access into the building via the new bridge in Queen’s Ride, and from the gently sloping terrace. There is level or ramped access throughout the building and wheelchair accessible lifts to all levels.

Accessible toilets and baby changing facilities are located on the ground floor near Sales and Information. There are disabled parking spaces available in the free car park (owned by Birmingham City Council;) adjacent to mac.

Attendance If you miss a week or a number of weeks for any reason we won’t be able to issue a refund.

Refunds, Exchanges and Transfers Fees may be refunded if cancellation is made 15 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after this time will not be refunded, unless we have to cancel a class due to circumstances beyond our control.

Depending on availability, if after one session you decide that the learning programme you have enrolled on is unsuitable and notify us within 48 hours by contacting the Sales and Information team; we will endeavour to transfer you to another programme of your choice but cannot guarantee this in all cases.

While every effort is made to offer the learning programme as set out on mac’s website and literature, mac reserves the right to withdraw particular programmes and to change both the content and the pricing when the need arises without prior warning. Students who have already paid in full for a learning programme will not be subject to any price increase.

Where to find usmac is situated only a few minutes from Birmingham’s City Centre, located in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, opposite the County Cricket Ground on Edgbaston Road, off Pershore Road (A441) and Bristol Road. (A38).
