LEARNING ACTIVITY 01

CASE STUDIES

You are required to work in pairs for this exercise. Each of the following cases describe typical situations, which may be encountered. Please specify whether you think that a coaching or mentoring approach or both techniques would be appropriate for each situation.

SITUATION COACH MENTOR1 Keneliwe has been on an employeeship for 6 weeks. She is

reluctant to do any work and tells everyone that her role is just to observe and learn. You realise that despite all the orientation, that she has misunderstood the purpose of the programme.

2 Thabo is very keen and is trying to learn everything that he can about the organisation. As a result, he is spending a lot of time out of the department visiting other sections. This results in him not achieving his allocated departmental tasks.

3 Thandi is a conscientious employee who has impressed you so far. She shows a lot of initiative and enthusiasm for her job. She has stopped by your office to discuss a personal problem that is affecting her ability to concentrate and do her job. She has just discovered that her mother is dying of cancer. She is very close to her mother and is extremely upset. She is considering drop-ping out of the programme in order to look after her mother.

4 Fatima has been on a project management-learning programme. She has just submitted a report and action plan to you on how she intends approaching a particular project that has been allo-cated to her. Unfortunately, she has not done a thorough job of scoping the project and identifying the activities that need to be addressed. As a result, her action plan is not realistic.

5 Chris has done extremely well since he has been on the em-ployeeship programme. As a result, you have decided to assign him to a particular project, which will stretch him and involve him in working with people outside the department. He is feeling a bit nervous about his ability to cope with the project and has stopped by your office to talk about his fears and insecurities. You have no doubt that he will cope and will learn a lot in the process

6 Kobus is a new employee who has a degree in Engineering. He has lots of energy and enthusiasm for his new job and is a proj-ect leader. You want to get him off on the right start.

7 Susan has extremely high standards of performance, and push-es herself and others equally hard. Unfortunately, her behaviour seems to have created a morale problem in her unit. She has her unit working overtime and weekends as she attempts to oversee every detail. Susan demands perfection. You are aware that there have been several complaints from her employees.

8 Mandla has been on a management learning programme of which planning was a module. He has just submitted his report and action plan to you on how he intends improving his depart-ment’s productivity. However, he has confused concepts and his action plan is not realistic.

The following checklist is designed as a self-evaluation of your willingness and preparedness to assume the very important and responsible role of being a mentor to a less experienced employee. It is not a test and relies fully on you answering the questions as honestly as possible.

Instructions: Read each statement and place an “x” in the appropriate column that represents the degree to which you see yourself meeting the statements. There is no single ideal profile but candidates who possess many of these characteristics are likely to do well as mentors. If you are unsure about your suitability, it may be useful to get a second opinion from a colleague who knows you well.
