COVID-19 Testing Strategies

Testing

Strategy

Description When to use this strategy?

Diagnostic Individual has symptoms or known exposure to

COVID-19. This includes testing of close

contacts.

To determine if symptomatic/exposed individual has

COVID-19, needs to quarantine, jumpstart contact

tracing and outbreak mitigation strategies.

Screening Testing of individuals in high-risk or congregate

settings. This includes testing individuals who do

NOT have symptoms or known exposure.

To catch asymptomatic cases, prevent outbreaks,

build trust and confidence.

Surveillance Population-wide testing that cannot be traced

back to an individual (e.g., wastewater testing).

To understand virus prevalence in community, guide

more targeted testing interventions.

4

Given the high-contact nature of your sport, athletes are being asked to engage in

SCREENING testing in order to reduce chance of outbreaks from asymptomatic cases.

Types of COVID-19 Tests

PCR Test

• Gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19

• Oral, shallow nasal, or nasopharyngeal (brain tickler)

• Resulted at a lab

• 24-72 hour turn around time

Rapid Antigen Test

• Less sensitive

• Shallow nasal swab

• Resulted on site

• 15-minute turn around time

Testing does not replace other mitigation strategies…

Learn to Return: Athletics

• Health Commons, in partnership the DOH, are providing free rapid antigen testing to all athletic teams across the state where testing is required to compete

• This program provides training, guidance, and rapid antigen testing materials to the athletic community in order to help teams comply with new testing requirements

• Testing should take place twice weekly (one during the week, one just before match), spaced 3-4 days apart

• Rapid antigen test vendor is BinaxNOW

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

2 Days 1-2 Apply for CLIA waiver

9

A CLIA waiver (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) is a certification that allows a facility to legally examine a person

through waived tests for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease.

To apply for a CLIA waiver:

1. Print, fill out, and sign the application

2. Email a copy of the application to DOH

3. Mail the original, ink signed hard copy with $190 fee to DOH

Some schools may already have a CLIA waiver!

You do not need to wait for your CLIA waiver to be formally approved or mailed to you before ordering test kits or start testing

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

3 Days 1-2 Order BinaxNOW test kits

10

Order your BinaxNOW test kits as soon as possible – takes approximately 1 week to arrive from order date

Order the volume of tests needed for the entire season, assuming twice weekly testing (1 box = 40 tests)

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

4 Days 2-3 Communicate testing plan and collect parent consent to student testing

11

Share the testing plan with your community – athletes, parents, coaches and trainers

Templates for announcement letter and parent consent form can be found in toolkit

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

5 Days 4-6 Identify test observers and watch BinaxNOW training videos

12

Test observer can be any layperson 18+ with a high school degree (or equivalent)

If your team is large, consider having more than 1 trained test observer to make the screening process more efficient

All test observers should:

1. Watch training modules 1-4 on the Abbot Lab’s training website

2. Keep documentation of training completion

13CONFIDENTIAL: NOT FOR CIRCULATION

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

6 Days 7-9 Receive test kits and quality control

13

You should receive your test kits approximately 1 week after ordering

BinaxNOW test kits include (1 box):

• 40 test cards (a cardboard, book-shaped hinged test card containing the

test strip)

• 1 extraction reagent bottle

• 40 patient nasal swabs (sterile swabs; one should be used as a negative

control in quality control test)

• 1 positive control swab (non-infectious recombinant SARS-CoV-2

nucleocapsid antigen dried onto a swab to be used for positive quality

control test)

Perform quality control using positive and negative control swabs included.

Training modules will cover quality control procedures.

Test kit storage and stability

Implementation Steps

STEP DATE ACTIVITY

7 Day 10 Launch testing

14

Student screening should be:

• Twice weekly (with one test on the day of the contest)

• Spaced 3-4 days apart

Where to test

Supplies needed to test:

• Ensure consent is obtained from each participant (or parent for athletes under 18)

• PPE (gloves and surgical mask)

• Timer (avoid using personal cell phone to avoid contamination)

• Flat surface

• Pens / permanent marker

• Student Athlete COVID-19 Testing Reporting Sheet

• Hand sanitizer

• Disinfectant

• Biohazard bags

15

Documentation of test results – template tracking sheet in toolkit

Cadence of contest reporting:

1. Day before contest: Verification of negative tests (and/or vaccination status) must be shared between both visiting and host

facilities

2. Day of contest: Verification of day-of negative tests (and/or vaccination status) must be shared between both visiting and

host facilities. All verifications will be confirmed by competition officials

If there is a positive test result, notify competition officials, the opposing team / facility, and your local health department
