As teachers to children, teaching from
the basic of alphabet until writing dissertations,
is PDIs to novice drivers. Their huge
responsibilities include from simply teaching a
person on how to hold a steering wheel to
training a driver of other complex skills such as
perceiving hazards, or negotiating winding roads
during heavy downpour. Would you risk your
life to be inside a car on the road driving by a
driver who still confuses between acceleratorand brake paddles? They would.

OBJECTIVE
• The challenge posed by this transformation stems from how to ensure
PDIs can be involved in continuous learning since they are the ones to
directly deliver the training contents.
• Therefore, this study intends to understand PDI’s trend of gadget and
internet usage, as well as the potential of e-learning among PDIs.
-
WE HOPE THAT PDI’S ARE NOT
LUDDITE
(OPPOSING TECHNOLOGY / CHANGE)
-
METHODOLOGY/APPROACH
• Online survey among PDIs via Malaysia Driving Instructors Association (MyDIA) committee platform
• ITEMS:
• gadgets (smart phone and tablet) usage behavior,
• internet subscription, and
• the potential of learning through a digital platform
• A pilot study was carried out during MyDIA’s Annual General Meeting at MIROS in July 2018 (with 22 responses)
• A total of 116 completed responses were analyzed in this preliminary investigation
-
RESULTS & FINDINGS
• DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE
• majority of respondents were male (84.5 %) • consistent with the fact that PDIs in Malaysia are mostly made up of men
• The top three states where the respondents work at DIs were Selangor (including Kuala Lumpur; Klang Valley), Johor and Perak
• The respondents’ average age was 46 years old (n = 107),
• consistent with a previous finding that the job is not popular among younger people (below 35)
-
Gadget Use and Internet (Data) Subscription
ALL OF THEM OWN A SMART PHONE
-
Gadget Use and Internet (Data) Subscription
MAJORITY OF PDIS AGREED THAT THEY USE THEIR SMART PHONE MORE THAN
FIVE HOURS A DAY (39.6 %)
84.9 % OF THE RESPONDENTS SAID THEY USE SMART PHONE FOR THEIR JOB
PREFERRED MESSAGING PLATFORM AND THE RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
>> WHATSAPP (100 %)
>> FACEBOOK MESSENGER (56.5 %)
>> TELEGRAM (35.9 %)
>> WECHAT (20.7 %)
-
E-LEARNING POTENTIAL
MOST OF THE RESPONDENTS DECLARED THAT THEY LEARN SOMETHING VIA
BROWSING THE INTERNET (94.6 %) AND ALSO THROUGH VIDEO-BASED
PLATFORM SUCH AS YOUTUBE (89.2 %)
TOPICS THEY LEARNED:>> DRIVING TECHNIQUE (59.5 %),
>> VEHICLE MAINTENANCE (50.0 %),
>> SAFETY (MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY BE TRAFFIC SAFETY) (45.2 %),
>> TEACHING TECHNIQUE (47.6 %)
OTHER TOP SEARCHES: SPORTS (39.3 %), COOKING RECIPE AND FOOD (23.8 %),
AGRICULTURE (11.9 %), ARTS AND CRAFTS (11. 9 %), ANIMALS OR PETS (10.7 %)
THE RESPONSES WERE
VERY MUCH RELATED TO THEIR JOB
-
E-LEARNING POTENTIAL
MORE THAN HALF OF THE RESPONDENTS (57.7 %) AGREED THAT THEY
FACED DIFFICULTY TO PHYSICALLY ATTEND COURSES
(ADVANCED OR REFRESHER COURSES BY RTD OR OTHER ORGANIZERS)
The main factors were (n = 67):
(i) time (69 %);
(ii) distance (61 %);
(iii) financial (60 %);
(iv) family (34 %);
(v) employer (27 %).
When asked of their opinion whether online courses could bridge the
gap in continuous learning for PDIs (except for practical), 92.5 %
stated their agreement.

CONCLUSION
• This background study was conducted to ascertain the potential of e-learning among PDIs in Malaysia.
• More studies should be conducted in the future and a proper framework needs to be developed by the relevant parties (e.g. MyDIA, RTD and MIROS) to enable e-learning platform for PDIs.
• Based on the findings of this brief investigation, it can be posited that the potential of e-learning among PDIs is great especially due to their smart phone and internet use behaviour.
