Flesh vs. Spirit

• Ishmael vs. Isaac (son of Promise)

• son of bondwoman vs. freewoman• Unbelief vs. Faith, Law vs. Grace• Two natures believers face in themselves

• Galatians 4:22-23• 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons,

one by a slave woman and the other by a free woman. 23 Now the slave woman’s son was conceived through human means, while the free woman’s son was conceived through divine promise.

• Body of Christ– Kings & Priests: Revelation 1:5-6– Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins

Typologies - Akedah

Genesis 22:1-2 (KJV)1 And it came to pass after these things,

that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham:and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Page 9: Learn the Bible Highlights Hour 4 Genesis 12-50

Typologies - Akedah

• Isaac & Jesus Christ• "thy only son"• Isaac probably same age as Jesus• "on the third day" - Abraham counted Isaac dead 3 days• Abraham believed God would resurrect Isaac to keep

His promise of an heir. Hebrews 11:17-19 "Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead"

• "took the wood... laid it on Isaac" (carried the cross)• "where is the Lamb? ... God will provide Himself a

Lamb" (a ram was substituted for Isaac, not a lamb)• Was Abraham aware he was reenacting prophecy in

advance?

Page 10: Learn the Bible Highlights Hour 4 Genesis 12-50

Typologies - Akedah

• Isaac & Jesus Christ

• Hebrews 11:17-19• By faith Abraham, when he was tested,

offered Isaac—he who had received the promises was about to offer his unique son in sacrifice, 18 about whom it had been said, “It is through Isaac that descendants will be named for you.” 19 Abraham was certain that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did get Isaac back in this way.

Page 11: Learn the Bible Highlights Hour 4 Genesis 12-50

Typologies - Akedah

• Mount Moriah

• "in the Mount of the Lord it shall be seen" (prophetic)

• Threshing Floor of Arunah (temple)• Peak (Golgotha)

• Leviticus 1:11• 11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar

northward before the Lord:and the priests

Typologies - Bride for Isaac

• Isaac & His Bride (Jesus, The Holy Spirit & The Church)

• Eleazar sent to gather Bride • Eleazar means Comforter; Holy Spirit is the

Comforter (John 14:16,14:26, 15:26, 16:7– John 14:26 - But the Comforter, which is

the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Page 16: Learn the Bible Highlights Hour 4 Genesis 12-50

Typologies - Bride for Isaac

• Isaac & His Bride (Jesus, The Holy Spirit & The Church)

• Bride agrees to marry bridegroom– Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give

honour to him:for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

• He gives her gifts (Gifts of the Holy Spirit)• Isaac edited out of the story

– John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away:for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Other Lessons

• Lot "removed" before judgement - God will not judge the righteous along with the wicked. A model of the Rapture?

• Jacob wrestles with God (actually wrestles with himself as he is transformed from flesh to spirit). God asks "What is your name?" Jacob is finally blessed for who he really is (by faith not by deception).

• Hints of Levitical laws ordained before Moses - Animal sacrifices by Noah & Patriarchs, "clean & unclean" animals in the Ark, Levirate Marriage - codified by Moses at Sinai, but ordained in Eden
