Então... O que é um milagre?

De acordo com o dicionário, é ‘um eventoincomum causado por forças misteriosasde forma surpreendente e inesperada’.

Já a sabedoria popular afirma ser qualquerevento inexplicável pelas leis da Natureza,ou uma força contrária à própria Natureza.

So... What is a miracle?

According to the dictionary, it is ‘an unusualevent caused by mysterious forces in asurprising and unexpected way’.

The popular wisdom tells it is any eventinexplicable by to the laws of Nature or anoperating force contrary to Nature

Saint Augustine made things clearer bydeclaring: "Miracles are not contrary toNature. Only to what we know aboutNature."

I must agree with him.

Quando meus filhos tinham 10, 8, 7 e 5anos, apenas a caçula ainda não sabia ler.

Como a maioria das crianças, ela estavaansiosa por aprender!

Certa noite, os irmãos mais velhosinventaram uma brincadeira nova...

Na sala, soletravam uma palavra para ela.Ela ia até ao quarto e repetia as letras paraa irmã mais velha.

Após desvendarem juntas a palavra, acaçula retornava e a repetia aos irmãos,gritando de alegria.

Logo, logo, os meninos tiveram aquelainspiração típica de irmãos mais velhos, ecomeçaram a soletrar palavras longas –tipo ‘liqüidificador’, ‘ventilador’, etc.

Mas a menininha não se deu por vencida.

A mais velha veio em seu socorro. Passoua ouvir a palavra sendo soletrada desde asala pelos meninos, e a decifrava domesmo modo para a irmãzinha.

Para espanto dos meninos, a pequenacontinuava dizendo as palavras certas,pulando e gritando na maior euforia:

- Essa é fa-cí-li-ma!

E a tartaruga mais uma vez venceu a lebre.

How Do You Spell It?

Do you know your own resources to learn aforeign language? Let me illustrate it with apersonal example...

When my children were 10, 8, 7 and 5, onlythe youngest still didn’t know how to read.

As young children usually do, she waseager to learn it!

One evening, her older brothers came upwith a new game...

In the living room, they spelled a word forher. She went to the bedroom and repeatedit to her oldest sister.

After discovering together the word, theyoungest returned and repeated it to herbrothers, shouting of joy.

After a while, the boys had that usualinspiration of older brothers, and startedspelling long words – like‘misunderstanding’, ‘worthwhile’, etc.

But the little girl didn’t give up.

The oldest came in her help. She startedlistening to the word being spelled from theliving room by the boys, and told it straightto her little sister.

For the boys’ admiration, the youngest keptsaying the right words, time after time,celebrating each victory:

- That was too easy!

And the tortoise won the race again.

Seus Problemas Se Acabaram-Se!

Devido à complexidade da gramáticaportuguesa ensinada nas escolas, gostariade simplificar seu uso numa abordagemmais compreensível.

De que valerá a um aprendiz de idiomassaber a diferença entre os verbosdefectivos e abundantes, impessoais eanômalos? Perda de tempo, né?

Em Português temos 3 pessoas no singular(eu, tu, ele/ela), 3 no plural (nós, vós,eles/elas) – além de inúmeros temposverbais e verbos irregulares.

Por essas e outras (que não cito por faltade espaço) sugiro que você focalizeprimeiro os tempos verbais simples –presente, passado e futuro, e as trêspessoas do singular.

Substitua a 2ª pessoa (tu) pelo pronome detratamento ‘você’. O verbo concordará coma 3ª pessoa do singular - ele/ela.

Além disso, utilizando ‘vai’ e ‘vou’ para ofuturo, você pode conjugar qualquer verbo:

Presente Passado Futuro1. Eu falo falei vou falar2. Você fala falou vai falar3. Ele/ela fala falou vai falar

Embora haja explicações mais detalhadase M-U-I-T-O mais complexas nasgramáticas convencionais, essas são asformas mais utilizadas na comunicação dodia-a-dia.

Se eu fosse você, já comemoraria estagrande conquista com um grito pela janela:

“– Meus problemas de Português se acabaram-se!”

(Quer dizer, é melhor estudar mais umpouquinho antes! ☺)

Your Language Problems Is Over!

Due to the complexity of the Portuguesegrammar taught at school, I would like tosimplify its use in a more comprehensibleapproach.

Why should a language learner bother toknow the difference between defective andabundant, impersonal or anomalous verbs?Waste of time, right?

In Portuguese there are 3 singular persons(I, you, he/she) and 3 in the plural (we, you,they) – besides numberless verbal tensesand irregular verbs.

That’s why (and many others ‘whys’ which Idon’t mention here for space constraints) Isuggest you to focus in the simple verbaltenses – present, past and future – and thethree singular persons.

Replace the second person (you) by thetreatment pronoun ‘you’. The verb willagree with the 3rd singular person - he/she.

Besides, by using ‘will’ for the future, youcan conjugate any verb this way:

Present Past Future1. I speak spoke will speak2. You speak spoke will speak3. He/she speaks spoke will speak

Though there are more detailed andM-U-C-H more complex approaches in theconventional grammars, those are the mostused forms in daily communication.

If I were you, I would celebrate this findingby going to the window and shouting:

“– My language problems is over!”

Durante o almoço, perguntei ao meu pai se eletinha algum dinheiro para que eu fizesse umlanche à tarde. Pela expressão de preocupaçãodele, eu soube que ele não tinha.

Começamos a comer – todos em silêncio –enquanto ele procurava uma solução para aquelasituação embaraçosa. (Como pai de 4 filhos hojeem dia, posso imaginar seus sentimentos...)

Terminado o almoço, ele já tinha uma resposta:

- Vamos lá, garoto! Vou te levar de bicicleta.

Feliz da vida, montei na garupa. Fomos batendopapo – sentindo aquele ventinho no rosto,aproveitando a companhia um do outro.

Ele parou próximo à escola. Havia um escadão asubir.

- Agora é contigo. Você vai ter que subirsozinho.

Agradeci com um sorriso e já estava virando ascostas, quando ele gritou:

- Filho! Sabe porque eu te trouxe aqui?

Eu não tinha mínima idéia. Acenei com a cabeça.

- Eu te trouxe aqui pra... pra você guardar odinheiro do ônibus. Agora você já podecomprar sua merenda...

E depois de tomar um fôlego, conseguiufinalmente desabafar:

- Eu te trouxe aqui porque te amo.

Após esta grande confissão ficamos os dois sempalavras. Nossos olhos se umedeceram. Fiqueitão feliz que subi o escadão correndo.

O pensamento sobre a merenda já não mepreocupava mais... Tudo o que eu queria erasaber mais sobre o sentimento que haviaacabado de experimentar.

Em outras palavras, eu queria aprender maissobre o que era o amor.

How Daddy Taught Me About Love

When I was a boy, I studied in the afternoon. Toget to school, I had to cross the whole city.

At lunchtime, I asked daddy if he had somemoney for a snack in the afternoon. By hisconcerned expression, I knew he didn’t.

We started eating – silently – while he tried tofigure out a solution for such embarrassingsituation. (As a father of 4 nowadays, I canimagine his feelings...)

As we finished the meal, he came up with that:

- Let’s go, boy! I will take you by bicycle.

Excited, I got on his bike. Feeling that breeze inour faces, we were just chatting, enjoying eachother’s company.

He stopped close to the school. There was a bigstairway to climb.

- Now it’s your turn. You’ve got to climb it onyour own.

I thanked him with a smile and was alreadyturning back when he shouted:

- Son! Do you know why I’ve brought you here?

Having no idea what he meant, I just nodded.

- I’ve brought you here to... to save you themoney of the trip. Now you can have yoursnack...

He took a deep breath, and bared his heart atonce:

- I’ve brought you here because I love you.

After such confession, we were both speechless.Our eyes got wet. Overflowing with happiness, Iclimbed the stairway.

The thought of the snack was not concerning meanymore... All I really wanted was to know moreabout the feeling I had just experienced.

In other words, I wanted to learn more about themeaning of love.

Mulheres de Aço

Sou de Volta Redonda, a capital brasileira doaço. Ao menos foi isso o que cresci ouvindo.

Em nossa cidade, o que não tem ‘miner’ ou‘sider’ no nome, tem ‘aço’: Voltaço, Votoraço,Cooperaço, Tintaço, Torcida Mulheraço.

Por falar nisso, uma das mulheres de aço queajudaram a edificar a cidade foi minha própriamãe. Se conheceram ainda recém-nascidas.

Aqui ela se casou, e teve três filhos. Viúva aos32, precisou desenvolver nervos de aço.

Por toda a vida, ela nos ensinou a gostar de lere de cantar. A ‘gostar’. Escrever ou cantar bemmesmo – nenhum de nós jamais aprendeu!

Numa destas ocasiões, conhecemos o GilbertoGil. Noutra, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimentoe até o Tom Jobim! Mas um de cada vez, éclaro: não cabiam todos ao mesmo tempo noradinho lá de casa!

Steel Women

I was born in Volta Redonda, the BrazilianCapital of Steel. At least I grew up listening to it.

In our city, what is not named by ‘miner’ or‘sider’, ends in ‘aço’: Voltaço, Votoraço,Cooperaço, Tintaço, Torcida Mulheraço.

By the way, one of the steel women who helpedbuilding our city was my own mother. Whenthey met at first, both had just been born.

Here she got married with 3 children. Widow at32, she needed to have nerves of steel.

Through all her life, she taught us to enjoyreading and singing. To ‘enjoy’. Writing orsinging well – neither of us have ever learned!

In one of such times, we met Gilberto Gil. Later,Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and evenTom Jobim! Each one at a time, of course: theydidn’t fit all at once in our old little radio!

During those hard days, steel men used to beton science – and women, on patience!☺

Nowadays, lots of people still bet on steel, onthe Web or in any profitable venture.

If the human can warm up even the coldestmetal what to say about our fellow men?

Some people devote time and talents tobusinesses. Others, to boys and girls. My momchose to invest it in raising her own children.

I believe she still beholds us – but from theother side of a thin veil. As sharp as a shiningsteel blade, she is probably changing whatevershe touches.

Não Ponha o Carro na Frente dos Bois

Tem gente que espera atingir a perfeiçãoantes da prática.

Mas antes de correr, você tem que andar.Antes de andar, você tem que engatinhar.E nesse intervalo, vá se acostumando comos tombos!

Durante meus primeiros dias comoprofessor, inúmeras vezes tive que sair dasala de aula para consultar a pronúncia daspalavras novas do texto. Sem problemas.

Essa cara-de-pau foi herança do meu pai.De tanto vender churrasco na feira, meuirmão e eu ficamos treinados em falar empúblico!☺

Durante uma aula em que euacompanhava, o coordenador do curso mepediu que desligasse os ventiladores darecepção. Não entendi o recado. Elerepetiu. Entendi menos ainda.

De repente, ele perdeu a paciência e disseem português – saindo da sala:

“ – Deixa que eu mesmo desligo!”

(Como em cada sala de aula havia um arcondicionado independente, eu não havianotado os ventiladores da recepção.)

Enquanto ele desligava o ventiladores, osalunos ficaram me olhando com aquelaexpressão de...

“ – Onde será que esse cara aprendeuInglês?”

Don’t Put the Cart Before the Horse

Some people want to reach perfectionbefore practicing.

But before running, you must walk. Beforewalking straight, you must walk on yourknees. In the meantime, get used tostumbling and falling!

In my first days as a teacher, fornumberless times I left the classroom inorder to check the pronunciation of newEnglish words. No problem.

Such easiness to put on a brave face wasmy father’s heritage. As we used to sellbarbecue on the open market, my brotherand I we got trained in public speaking!☺

During a class in which I was just watching,the coordinator asked me to turn off he fansin the reception. I didn’t get the idea. Herepeated the request. We were gettingnowhere.

All of a sudden, he lost his temper and saidin Portuguese – leaving the room:

“ – Let me do it on my own!”

(As each of the classrooms had its own airconditioning system, I had not noticed thefans in the reception.)

While he turned the fans off, the studentslooked at me surprised, as if askingthemselves:

Conhecimento Traz Liberdade

Quando eu tinha 12 anos, decidi aprender atocar trompete. Como nossa escola tinha umabanda, me inscrevi – sem imaginar o quantoiria gostar da brincadeira.

Quando o professor entrou – com aquele brilhonos olhos – já sabíamos que estudar com eleseria uma experiência interessante.

E acertamos em cheio. Ele fez o melhor quepôde para nos inspirar.

Me lembro de uma ocasião quando desenhouno quadro um círculo com vários tracinhos naborda. Enquanto observávamos, acrescentou:

“Meninos, estão vendo essas marquinhas nabeirada do círculo? Se o círculo representa oconhecimento que vocês têm hoje, cadatracinho representa uma janela que pode seraberta para novas descobertas na vida...”

Ele deu uma volta pela sala – dando um tempopra assimilarmos o conceito – e substituiu ocírculo por um outro maior.

“À medida em que vocês adquirirem maisconhecimento, seu círculo crescer – e vocêpode abrir mais e mais janelas para o mundo...”

Notando que havia captado nossa atenção, eledesenhou o último círculo:

“Podem me dizer o que vai acontecer quandoo círculo de vocês crescer, e crescer, ecrescer?”

Uma vozinha tímida veio lá do fundo:

“Esses círculos não têm fim, professor. Quantomais você aprende, mais você pode.”

Olhamos pra trás admirados. Aquele rapazinhode 12 anos havia resumido o momento... Eleestava ainda mais surpreso do que nós! Oprofessor concordou, animado:

“Mandou bem! A liberdade é resultado doconhecimento!”

E aquele foi apenas o começo de muitas,muitas outras descobertas que fizemos juntos.

Knowledge Brings Freedom

When I was 12, I wanted to learn how to playthe trumpet. As our school had a band, Ipromptly enrolled for it, not knowing how much Iwould enjoy the whole process.

When our teacher came on the scene – with aglimmer in his eyes – we knew that learningfrom him would be an amazing experience.

And we were absolutely right. He did his best toinspire us.

I still recall when he drew a small circle on theblackboard and crossed its border about adozen times. While we held our breath, he said:

"My boys, can you see those little marks aroundthis circle? If the circle represents all theknowledge you currently have, each checkrepresents a window that may be opened tonew discoveries in life..."

He moved around - giving us a little time tothink about the concept – and replaced the firstcircle with a larger one.

"As you acquire more knowledge, your circlekeeps growing, and you can set up more andmore windows to interact with the world..."

Noticing that he had our attention, he added thelast circle:

"Can you tell me what is going to happen whenyour circle grows and grows in constantmotion?"

A timid voice came from the back:

"Those circles will never end, teacher. Themore you learn, the more you can!"

We all looked back surprised. That 12-year-oldyoung man had so beautifully summarized themoment... He was even more surprised than wewere! The teacher nodded, excited:

"You've got it! Freedom is the result oflearning!"

And that was just the beginning of many, manydiscoveries we made together.

Aprendizagem de Idiomas:Melhor É Serem Dois Do Que Um

Em minha estante repousa um livrointitulado ‘Taquigrafia Sem Mestre’. Ao seulado, ‘Gaita Sem Mestre’.

Por isso, vejo que a probabilidade de umcurso ‘sem mestre’ acabar como coletor depó num canto da casa é enorme.

Sabe por quê?

Porque sem alguém que te providencie umfeedback adequado e constante, você vaifalar com as paredes? E quando vocêestiver de baixo astral, quem estará lá parate encorajar?

Outro benefício do estudo em dupla é quefirmamos um compromisso em relação aohorário e às etapas do estudo.

Quando eu era adolescente (E olha que jáfaz um tempão!) um amigo meu e eudecidimos fazer uma corrida.

Sem qualquer aquecimento, partimos emdisparada. Minutos depois, aquela dor dolado. Continuamos.

Bufando feito dois cavalos - ou ‘burros’ –chegamos à metade do caminho. Fizemosmeia-volta.

Mesmo sentindo dor, pensava comigo:

“Não posso atrapalhar a corrida dele...”

Ao terminarmos, compartilhei a dor quehavia suportado. Ele me disse que haviasentido o mesmo, o que me fez perguntar:

“– Por que você não parou no caminho?”

E logo veio a resposta:

“– Eu não queria atrapalhar sua corrida!”

Language Learning:Two Are Better Than One

In my bookshelf there is a book called‘Learn Shorthand by Yourself’. Besides it,‘Learn Harmonica by Yourself’.

It shows me that the probability of a ‘byyourself’ course become a dust collector ina corner of my house is simple huge.

Have you ever asked why?

Because without a friend to give you aconstant and suitable feedback, are yougoing to talk to the walls? And when youare feeling down, who is going to be thereto lift you up?

An additional benefit of studying together isthe commitment we build towards a setschedule and the studying stages.

When I was a teenager (What a long time!)a friend of mine and I decided to go jogging.

With no warm up at all, we immediatelystarted running. Minutes later, my belly washurting. We kept on.

Breathing like horses – or donkeys – we gothalf way through. We turned around at onceand started the way back.

Though suffering with pain, I thought:

“I don’t want to disturb his jogging...”

As we finished, I shared with him how I hadfelt. He told me he had being through thesame, what make me ask him:

“Why didn’t you stop on the way?”

His reply was simply:

“I didn’t want to disturb your jogging.”

A procura da liberdade sempre fez parte daminha vida. Ao terminar o EnsinoFundamental, planejava secretamenteabandonar o colégio, pensando que seria aforma mais fácil de conquistar a ‘liberdade’.

Meus planos estavam funcionando muitobem, até que minha mãe descobriu tudo!

Ao invés de me passar um belo sermão,me entregou um artigo intitulado ‘LiberdadePessoal – Eleve Seu Olhar’.

Eu peguei, desconfiado. Ela me olhou comuma visão de raio X – típica das Mães.

Bem no meio da página havia duas mãosalgemadas – sobre o teclado de um piano.O artigo enfatizava – com uma históriamuito convincente – que se alguém nãosabe tocar um instrumento musical,também não tem a liberdade de fazê-lo.

Por outro lado, um músico terá sempreduas opções – tocar ou não – e nisto seresume a essência da liberdade: ahabilidade de escolher.

Pra encurtar a história, mantive a poupançana cadeira.

Foi assim que descobri que eu estavabuscando a liberdade seguindo umcaminho contrário à ela!

Ao dedicar seu tempo e esforço paraaprender Português, sabe o que você vaiconseguir de tabela? Isso mesmo: muitomais liberdade.

Why I Didn’t Drop Out of School at 16

Searching for freedom has always beenpart of my life. After graduating from JuniorHigh School, I secretly planned to drop outof school, supposing it would be the easiestway to be free.

My plans were working perfectly but all of asudden my mom heard about it!

Instead of giving me a long, long sermon,she handed me an article entitled 'PersonalFreedom – Lift up Your Eyes'.

I took it, intrigued. She looked at me withher X-ray vision – as only Moms can do.

Right in the middle of the page there weretwo handcuffed hands over a pianokeyboard. The article emphasized –through a compelling story – that ifsomeone can't play a musical instrument,he/she is not free to do it.

On the other hand, a musician will alwayshave two options – playing it or not – andthat is what freedom is all about: the abilityto choose.

Long story short, I kept my butt on thechair.

That’s how I found my search for freedomwas a complete misunderstanding: I wasgoing to the opposite way!

As you dedicate time and efforts to learnPortuguese, do you know what you’re goingto acquire likewise? That’s it: much morefreedom.

Though my mom passed away in 2000, herway of living clearly showed me that onlytrue knowledge brings freedom. She livedup to her own beliefs. For a while I justbelieved her...

But now I know it on my own.

O Maior Pagamento de um Professor

Certa vez, fui chamado às pressas parasubstituir uma professora que havia faltado.

Naquela classe de cinco alunos, uma moçame chamou a atenção em particular porseu notável interesse em aprender.

A aula fluía naturalmente... Toquei um CD,e fiz perguntas de acompanhamento. Elesme pareceram um tanto confusos. Umdeles cochichou com o colega: "Inglês édifícil, né?"

Percebendo a preciosidade do momentopara derrubar esse mito, toquei de novo omesmo trecho por mais três vezes.

"Caramba, agora a gente já entende!"

"Pensei que você tivesse trocado de faixa.Tá fácil de acompanhar!"

Nem consigo descrever o que senti.

Convidei-os a que fizessem o mesmo como restante do CD e seguimos em frente.

Terminada a aula, tive aquela agradávelsensação de um serviço bem feito.

Enquanto saía da sala, notei algo diferentecom uma das alunas. Estava sozinha nocorredor. Tremia.

Chamei-a pelo nome. Ela virou-se, com aslágrimas a escorrer-lhe pela face. Fiqueisurpreso:

"O que foi? Eu disse alguma coisa errada?”

“Foi uma coisa que você disse sim, masnada de errado. As palavras que vocêfalou... Pela primeira vez alguém me fezacreditar que eu posso falar Inglês!"

Fiquei sem palavras.

The Greatest Payment of a Teacher

Once, I was called in a hurry to substitutean absent teacher.

There were five students in that class. Ayoung woman called my attention by hernoticeable interest in learning.

The class was flowing naturally... I played aCD, and asked some follow up questions.They seemed a bit confused. One of themwhispered to his classmate: "English is sodifficult, isn’t it?"

Recognizing that as a precious moment tofinish this myth, I played again the sametrack for three more times.

"Wow! Now we understand it!"

"I thought you had changed the track. It isso easy to follow along!"

I can't describe how I felt.

I just invited them to do the same with eachtrack of the CD and moved on.

Class over, I was feeling that satisfaction ofa job well done.

As I was leaving the classroom, I noticedsomething different with one of thestudents. She was trembling in the hall.

I called her by name. She turned around,with tears rolling down her face. I wassurprised:

“Something wrong that I said?”

"Yes, it was something that you said, butnothing wrong with that. The words youspoke... For the first time someone mademe believe that I can speak English!"

I was speechless.

She left, to wash her face. I got downstairs,trying to hold back the tears...
