THEN…….● The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards were first adopted by the

State Board of Education in 1996. ● The standards describe what students should know and be able to do upon

completion of a thirteen-year public school education. The standards are also designed to help teachers prepare our students to be college- and career-ready.

NOW…● The Common Core Standards adopted by New Jersey in 2010, with full

implementation in 2013-14, were drafted by assessment experts and teachers from across the country, and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs.

● The Common Core focuses on critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful.

● Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, and four territories have voluntarily adopted and are moving forward with the standards.

Literary Analysis Task

Page 15: Learn More About the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) & PARCC MaryJane Garibay Colts Neck Township Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction November.

Students are provided a variety of different sources (print and non-print) related to a particular topic, including texts, videos, photographs, graphs, surveys, maps, paintings,, etc.

Students are expected to answer text-dependent questions and produce writing that “dances” between different sources in a cohesive, understandable manner.

The final product is akin to integrating Compare/Contrast with Argument/Opinion.

Students use Evidence-Based Responses to compare/contrast, then make a claim.
