ABOUT US

Indonesian Online was founded by Dr. Ulrich (Uli) Kozok, Professor of Indonesian at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.  Most Indonesian language learning materials on this site were developed by Prof. Dr. Kozok, and his team consisting of native speakers of Indonesian. He is  also a specialist in Indonesian philology. He is the author of several books on language, culture, and especially the writing traditions of Sumatra. Dr. Kozok started developing Indonesian language teaching materials in 2003, and has since published a large number of text books and e-learning courses.  He received the prestigious Award for Excellence in Online Teaching from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. 

What is Indonesian Language

Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia) is the official language of Indonesia. Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation in the world. The 1 official language is Indonesian Bahasa Indonesia. Indonesian is spoken natively by 20% of the population, but almost everyone speaks it as a first or second language.  With a small vocabulary and simple spelling, Bahasa Indonesia may be the easiest non-Indo-European language for a native English speaker to master.

LEVELS

 You should test your proficiency in Indonesian by completing our self-assessment test for the Indonesian language. Here you can easily test yourself whether you are a beginner (A1-A2), an intermediate (B1-B2), or an advanced learner (C1-C2) of Indonesian.The following is the descriptions of the Levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF)

LEVELS If you are an A1 learner (Beginner), you should start

with Lesson 1 

 If you are an A2 learner (Elementary), you should start with Module 4

 If you are a B1 learner (Intermediate), we recommend that you use Baca Yuk and AnekaBaca as

your main textbooks.

 If you are a B2 learner (Upper Intermediate), you should start with Lessons 15-30.
