Students do not attend on this day except for their conference time with yourself and their teacher. Our 3-Way Conferences are an opportunity for your child to share their learning and successes thus far. It is also an opportunity for new goals to be set for the remainder of the year. Parents have been able to book their conference time through the Parent Portal. This booking system closed today at 9.am, with any further bookings occurring via our school office. PARENT OPINION SURVEY Thanks to our parents who have already taken time to complete the Parent Survey, providing us with invaluable feedback aimed at school improvement. The sample group selected still have an opportunity to complete this so if you haven’t already, I encourage you to. We really appreciate your input in identifying what we do well and areas we can improve. Extension Program—IGNITE We are launching the IGNITE Program, an extension opportunity for students who are achieving high level academic results who would benefit from engaging in challenging and collaborative group sessions. Currently we are evaluating many aspects of student learning to identify potential Ignite students. Teachers and leadership are forming initial groupings and parents of these students will receive notification of the opportunity for their child to participate shortly. The initial groupings will be focused on general academic extension with more targeted skills being planned for as we progress. Each term the groups can and will change, providing opportunities for other students to join, due to limited numbers and different focus areas. Shannon Whelan (Assistant Principal), Emma Meacham (Teaching and Learning Leader) Julie Collins (Data Manager) and I will be taking groups once a week, which we are very excited about. This Year 1-Year 6 program compliments our BOOST Program, which supports selected students requiring intervention support for short periods of time. We look forward to sharing our IGNITE learning and projects as the program progresses. EMERGENCY DRILL information Last Monday we had an emergency drill which we do at least four times per year. We employ an Emergency Management Team to provide professional training annually and follow up with a drill to ensure our processes and learning are embedded. This drill focused on what is called a discreet lockdown which means there is a person able to potentially harm on the premises. We deliberately did the drill during lunch so that staff and students were outside. Unlike previous drills, we gave no warning to staff or students, using CODES to initiate the drill for staff so students could not decipher the call. This drill is the hardest to manage and staff and students did exceptionally well considering the challenge of outside play. All drills allow us to evaluate our actions and strengthen what we do. Our hope is that we never have to enact such a drill however community safety is always a priority and we need to be prepared for anything. WORKING BEE—THIS SUNDAY 11th AUGUST 9am - 12.00pm We would love your assistance to spread mulch, paint a cubby, use our tyres that have been donated, tidy, prune, clean etc. If you can come for 1 hour great, even longer great...together we have great impact. If you can come please bring any tools you have that can assist. We have some that we can share but extra shovels, spades, cutting tools etc go a long way. As mentioned previously, we will be attempting to go ahead rain, hail or shine. Fingers crossed the weather is nice to us. 2020 PREP ENROLMENTS are nearly finalised - if you have a child joining us next year please let us know as our 2020 Orientation Program is very close to being confirmed. 2020 PLANNING—classes and structures Scarily, we are already planning for 2020. A part of this process is in forming classes that cater to a multitude of different academic, social and emotional needs (SEL). As part of our SEL we will be using a range of structured ‘Friendship’ focus activities towards the end of the term to assist with student groups. Resilience, pushing comfort zones, growth mindset and independence are core qualities we want to grow in our students—this includes strengthening current relationships and embarking on new ones. This mimics what we as adults experience. For this reason we are approaching the grouping of students differently than usual. We will be using structured ‘Friendship’ sessions to observe and collect important information from students to create 2020 classes, that maintain a sense of safety and belonging for each child however also encourages growth in all the qualities outlined. Building Friendship, Resilience and Problem Solving Skills
Building a broad range of social connects for any child is an essential part of a child’s wellbeing.
‘Most Children are innately social, creative and motivated to exchange ideas, thoughts, questions ad
feelings. (They use) gestures, movements, visual and non-visual cues, sounds, language and assisted
communication to engage and develop relationships’. VEYLDY (Victorian Early Years Learning and
Development Framework)
Through opportunities to observe and participate in social situations, children learn how
conversations (and social interactions) work. These important rules and skills enable children to
communicate with others in more sophisticated ways. Thus, the development of conversation and
social skills is dependent upon opportunities for children to interact with peers as part of supportive
and enriching experiences.
Friendships offer opportunities for sharing, learning, self-disclosure, advice, support and fun. For
many, making and keeping friends is quite effortless but for some it is a challenge. Developing and
maintaining friendships is important for a child’s social, emotional, psychological and moral
development.
In the school environment it is imperative that we provide opportunities for students to build and
develop friendships with as many peers as possibly. Providing opportunities such as play-times,
multi-age groupings, camps, and grades provides a broader opportunity to meet and develop common
interest with peers.
Up until around the age of 7 friendships usually develop between children who play together because
of shared circumstances – live nearby, in the same class, share mutual interests. Providing as many
opportunities to build communication and social skills is essential at this age.
Between the ages of 7-11 friendships usually become more stable. Friendships are defined as fairness,
loyalty and generous. Building resilience, growth-mind set and problem solving skills supports
children to shape theses stable friendships.
It is an important part of school that many and varied opportunities are presented to children to
connect with a broad range of peers to development these communication and social skills.
The structured ‘Friendship’ focused activities that students will be taking part in toward the end of
Term 3 will focus on current friendship groupings as well as friendships that are building. SEL
focuses heavily on developing student’s resilience in social settings, growth mind set and
independence. These ‘Friendship’ focused sessions will be used to observe, monitor and note
interactions between students for the development of 2020 class
groupings.

CAR PARK REMINDER:
The 5 minute drop off area out the front of the school is for drop off’s/pick up’s only. It is not
the area if you need to park & get out of the car. We have a number of incidents recently where
this area is not used correctly. Please make sure to only park in the 5 minute drop off area if
you are dropping students off/picking students up and not parking and geDng out of the car.

URGENT HELP REQUIRED
Every 4th Thursday of the Month (22/8 only 4 more for this year) – one helper till the end of the year.
QKR ISSUES – People have been experiencing issues trying to place lunch orders with QKR especially on Fridays. Just reminder that I can’t help you with the App issues – it is run by Mastercard. As this is an Australia wide App in schools, you can imagine there are a lot of people (except in WA) trying to get their orders in before the 8.20am cut off.
My recommendation is to try and order a day or two before if you can, if your child ends up not attending school for any reason & has a QKR order, it can be cancelled prior to the cut off time by going into ‘my activity’ in the App. You will receive a credit note which will automatically be applied next time you order.
If you are running out of time, I will accept written orders (it doesn’t have to be on a paper bag) & if you don’t have the cash you can request an IOU – please note we like you to pay your account within 7 days either in cash or via QKR Canteen IOUs. If you need to call for any reason, please do so after 9am particu-larly on Fridays. I have setting up to get done before my helpers arrive so we can have everything ready on time.
I also still have vacancies for a Tuesday or Wednesday each month if anyone can spare a few hours. If you are interested in giving canteen duty a go please contact me via the canteen in person or on 94311599, via [email protected] or by dropping a note in the
class lunch tub.

FOOD & DRINK
A designated food, drink & rest area will be set up. During
the evening children can enter this area to receive & con-
sume their popcorn and have access to unlimited water. If
your child is not allowed popcorn please indicate this
on the form below.
SUPERVISION
Parents and a few staff volunteer their time to assist the PFA
to run the discos. All volunteers have Working With Children
checks.
DROP OFF
Enter the GK MPB through the Art room doors. You will be
required to have your child’s name marked off the attendance
sheet. Children will then proceed straight into the disco.
Parents are asked not to enter the disco area.
PICK UP
When collecting your child/children please be punctual.
Enter the GK MPB through the Music room doors. Enter the
disco area and locate your child. Each child MUST be marked
off the attendance sheet before you leave. If you have a child
attending the second session please exit the MPB and line up
at the Art room doors (Entry doors).
