Lean and Six SigmaLean and Six Sigma are complementary in nature and, if performed properly, represent a long-term business initiative that can produce unprecedented results.

1. Lean focuses on eliminating non-value added steps and activities in a process

2. Lean makes sure we are working on the right activities

3. Lean defines and establishes the value flow as pulled by the customer

1. Six Sigma focuses on reducing variation from the remaining value-added steps

2. Six Sigma makes sure we are doing the right things right the very first time

3. Six Sigma makes the value flow smoothly without interruption

Lean Six Sigma Not Just for Manufacturing

“Service operations now comprise more than 80% of the GDP in the United States….Even within manufacturing companies, its common to have only 20% of product prices driven by direct manufacturing labor- the other 80% comes from the costs designed into the product or costs associated with support functions”Michael George, Lean Six Sigma for Service
