INTRODUCTION
You have likely downloaded this book because you are struggling with your
health and are in need of a new approach. If you are like most of my
patients, you do not want to choose between being on medications for the
rest of your life or, suffering with nagging health problems. Instead, you
want to live a life of good health and wellness that is unlimited in its
potential.
If you are fed up with not being able to enjoy the quality of life that you
deserve due to various health problems, then the information in this book
could change your life.
This book will be helpful if you are confused by all of the contradictive
health information and claims floating around these days? If you are like
many others, you have an idea of what you need to do but don’t know where
or how to get started. You may have tried all of the “fixes” that give you
little, if any results. You are probably fed up with looking for the right drug
(leaky gut cannot be corrected with a drug), diet or supplement that will
bring relief to your suffering by correcting the real cause and not just
relieving the symptoms.
I can tell you that you are not alone. There are millions of people just like
you struggling with many of the nagging chronic symptoms that are
associated with leaky gut. These symptoms are wide and varied and may
involve any of the bodies systems. Almost all chronic disorders have
digestive imbalances as part of the problem.
That is why I’ve spent the past 20 years studying and treating leaky gut. I
have treated thousands of my patients to help them heal their leaky gut and
resolve their chronic and confusing health symptoms.
In this book I will look at the truth about leaky gut and how it relates to
your chronic health symptoms and conditions. I will explore the most
4
common symptoms and why none of the drugs and most of the
supplements are not fixing the real problem.
My goal in offering you this information is to:
Offer you a clear overview of this condition of leaky gut
Give you a sense of empowerment that there are indeed natural
solutions to your current health problems
Encourage you to be proactive about your health and treat it as a top
priority now and for the rest of your life
Having treated thousands of patients with numerous health concerns and
having dealt with some of these issues personally, I know how frustrating
and challenging it can be to struggle with a chronic health issue.
Those of us that practice functional medicine have learned that health
problems are often warning signs from a very intelligent place within
ourselves. These signals are telling us that we need to change our current
way of doing things. Learning how to thrive in your life has a lot to do with
learning from your health concerns, not just pushing them away, covering
them up with drugs or judging them as negative. You need to make a choice
to take positive action. Only you can choose to be well. This approach is, for
many of our patients, where true healing begins.
If you have any questions or would like to pursue this form of healthcare, I
offer a FREE 10 minute consultation to discuss your particular concerns.
Let’s get started!

What Is A Healthy Gut And What Does It Do
What are signs of a healthy digestive tract?
They are –
• No upper indigestion or acid reflux (heartburn).
• Little or no regular gas, bloating or flatulence.
• Regular soft and formed bowel movements once or twice a day.
• No partially digested food or oils in the stool.
• No intestinal cramping or pain with foods or with defecation.
• No joint pain or stiffness.
• No skin problems.
• No autoimmune disorders
• A healthy physical exam and appearance in general that reflects good
nutrition.
The digestive system is the root of all health.
This is why your gut health is the biggest and most important factor for
your general health and wellbeing…
So, let’s begin by stating that your gut is the center gear for the machine
that is you. It affects every system in your body. It is imperative that it
works correctly for health and wellness.
What is the gut lining?
The digestive tract (Gut) is a mucous layer, also referred to as the mucosal
layer, and is a very thin one cell thick wet area that lines the intestinal walls.
The mucosal layer also lines the lungs, eyes, nasal cavities and vaginal wall.
It serves the following functions:
Digestion - Activate enzymes, extracts nutrients, supports immune
system, endocrine and psychological functions.
6
Immune – The gut makes up 80% of the immune system. Its protective
barrier-protects and covers mast cells that contain histamine. Antibodies
made from the intestinal wall are secreted. Your gut is responsible for
protecting you against pathogens including: harmful parasites, bacteria,
viruses, yeast and fungi.
Autoimmunity - What does the gut have to do with the immune system
and autoimmunity? Everything! It is the properly functioning gut that
prevents autoimmunity. A common link to all autoimmune conditions and
is at the root of developing autoimmunity is intestinal permeability a.k.a.
“leaky gut”
Psychological – Science shows that not only does your brain have
neurotransmitters but so does your “second brain”, the gut. Embedded in
the wall of the gut, the enteric nervous system (ENS) seems to play an
important role in our physical and mental well-being. It can work both
independently of and in conjunction with the brain in your head and,
although you are not conscious of your gut “thinking”, the ENS helps you
sense environmental threats, and then influences your response. “A lot of
the information that the gut sends to the brain affects well-being, and
doesn’t even come to consciousness,” says Michael Gershon at Columbia-
Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. The gut also makes and contains
neurotransmitters that affect mood. Your gut is responsible for producing
the main chemical substance needed to fight depression. It also is involved
in the production of the neurotransmitter that affects anxiety and sleep.
Whole Body - Your gut is responsible for proper digestion and absorption
of nutrients needed to supply the entire body with the required building
blocks for energy, growth, and repair. Without proper digestion all of the
body is negatively affected.

What is Leaky Gut
Each day I see patients that are suffering with leaky gut as a primary issue
or as part of one or more other health issues. So, what is this rarely
diagnosed and more rarely correctly treated chronic health issue?
Conventional doctors, even gastroenterologist, usually don’t diagnosis or
treat leaky gut. Any treatment consists of treating the symptoms but not the
real cause. In fact, poor gut health is responsible for up to 90% of all
chronic health symptoms and conditions!
What is leaky gut? The more technical name is intestinal permeability.
Leaky gut is increased permeability of the lining of the small intestine.
However, in this book I will discuss leaky gut from a much broader, looser
definition to include not just permeability but also including some of the
other digestive contributing factors of decreased stomach acid, decreased
digestive enzymes, dysbiosis (imbalance of good and bad bacteria and
increased yeast), parasites, food sensitivities / allergies, and inflammation.
All digestion happens outside of your body because like your skin, the
intestinal lining serves as a barrier between the outside environment (food,
drink, etc.) and the internal environment (blood stream). When the lining
is working properly, nothing harmful can get through. But when this lining
breaks down and leaky gut is present, harmful parasites, bacteria, yeast /
fungi, and toxins can get pass the barrier into the blood stream and then
move freely to any area of the body.
Leaky gut is like the equivalent of not having your skin intact. When you
have burns, cuts and scrapes of the skin it can allow all of the harmful stuff
from the outside to go straight into your body. Just think about how many
infections you would have! You probably wouldn’t survive. So, just like
when the skin has breaks, when you have leaky gut there is an opening for
substances to enter into the bloodstream that should never get in. This
creates a condition that leads to many different symptoms, conditions, and
diseases. As long as the condition of leaky gut remains, you remain
susceptible to any and all types of related symptoms. Leaky gut is one
9
contributing factor that causes treatments for various health issues not to
work well.
Because leaky gut is such an insidious condition it is so often ignored or
overlooked, even by most medical professionals. Most people just ignore
the symptoms as no big deal or self-treat until they become impossible to
ignore or have developed into an additional, sometimes serious, health
issue. Unfortunately this process can continue on and the connection
between gut and other health issues is never made. This means one of the
causes of your health issue(s) may never be addressed preventing any
resolution of the condition.
How Leaky Gut Syndrome Develops
The Leaky Gut Syndrome process all begins with the irritation and wearing
away of the mucosal barrier. Your entire digestive tract from end to end is
lined with a single cell layer of mucous that accounts for 80% of your
immune system. When this mucosal barrier becomes damaged due to poor
diet, toxins, chronic stress, imbalanced gut flora, certain medications, or
inflammation you literally lose that 80% of your immune system on the
spot leaving you vulnerable to all kinds of infections.
As the damage continues and Leaky Gut Syndrome progresses, it begins to
takes its toll on the microvilli that line your intestinal walls. These tiny
fingerlike projections are responsible for secreting the enzymes you need to
properly digest your food and for absorbing nutrients. Soon enough your
digestion is severely impaired and you begin to develop nutrient
deficiencies. And these vital nutrients that you're missing out on are a
necessary component to recovering from Leaky Gut Syndrome as well as
protecting you from developing many other problems.
And that’s not even the end of it.
The cells of your intestinal lining are designed to link together in such a way
that they form tiny tightly formed gaps that allow only fully digested
nutrients through and into the bloodstream. But as the damage continues,
these gap junctions become wider and wider and allow larger unwanted
10
particles such as undigested food, toxins, parasites, bacteria, and yeast
straight into your bloodstream.
What Leaky Gut Looks Like
Once the gaps are opened and these harmful substances hit the
bloodstream, they are able to travel anywhere in the body. They wreak
havoc and create all kinds of Leaky Gut Syndrome symptoms, many of
which seem completely unrelated to your gut, such as arthritis, chronic
fatigue, eczema, headaches & migraines, ringworm, hyperactivity, anxiety,
and depression just to name a few.
And now that little 20% of what is left of your immune system must work
overtime to fight off all of these harmful substances that are literally leaking
through your gut and into your bloodstream. Because your gut is constantly
leaking, your immune system never gets a chance to properly recover and
eventually becomes so overwhelmed that it begins to attack your own
healthy tissue and organs. And that marks the beginning of autoimmune
disease.

Some Common Leaky Gut Symptoms Examined
Allergies
The mucous layer becomes damaged due to the below causes and triggers
mast cells lining the intestinal wall to release histamine and other
inflammatory cells that lead to inflammation. This causes the inflamed
intestinal wall to become “leaky” or permeable and large molecules that
normally would require further digestion are absorbed through the
intestinal wall into the blood stream. The body sees them as “none self” or
as an attacker and this leads to your body’s immune system to attack these
large molecules. This attack presents as an allergic reaction to the food.
These reactions can be mild to severe. Some of the symptoms can be
itching, pain, rapid heart rate, irritability, urticaria, angioedema (selling of
throat, tongue, lips, face). An extreme reaction could lead to anaphylaxis
which can be life threatening.
Autoimmune Disorders
All autoimmune problems have leaky gut as part of the presentation and
cause. Autoimmune disorders (there are 80 of them) have several
components and one of them is leaky gut. One of the ways leaky gut in the
broad definition in this book causes autoimmune disorders is by interfering
with the methyl process. When there is too little HCL and B vitamins are
not amply extracted and combined with potassium the process doesn’t
occur in ample amounts. This lack of the methyl group allows bad genes to
be turned on. Another trigger can be the inflammation that is part of leaky
gut. Other triggers can come from the immune responses from dysbiosis,
parasites, fungi, virus or bacteria.
Depending on your genetic make-up, this can increase the risk of
developing
• Chronic Fatigue
• Fibromyalgia
• Lupus
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• MS
13
• Hashimoto’s
• Graves
• Sjogrens
• Asthma
• Eczema
• Psoriasis
• Other immune disorders (there are 80 of them)
• Cortisol/adrenal issues due to the massive inflammation of the
intestinal wall.
This is just to name some.
If you want to address an autoimmune disease you have to
address leaky gut.
Gas – Bloating – Distention – Reflux – GERD
If these symptoms are frequent they are indicators of Leaky Gut. Treatment
of these with antacids or medications actually worsens the condition and
allows it to continue to develop. Do not ignore the sometimes “mild
common” symptoms.
Constipation
Constipation is such a widespread epidemic that it has become an
acceptable and “normal” condition. One of the reasons most people think
that constipation is normal these days and this belief is often supported by
conventional doctors is a patient will tell the doctor that I go once every two
to three days and get a response of “that is normal for you”.
Many of these patients tell me they can’t remember a time when they
weren’t constipated. The bottom line is that if you are not having at least
one or more good bowel movements a day then you are constipated.
Constipation is usually a simple problem to fix and not with laxatives.
Laxative can be additive to the body in that chronic use causes constipation
in that the body can perform the function without the laxative.
14
Correcting leaky gut, dysbiosis and inflammation should resolve your
constipation.
Did you know that are almost a $1,000,000,000.00 (billion dollars) in
laxatives sold each year in the US?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
For many they don’t just have constipation but may have alternating
diarrhea and constipation. Some lean toward loose stools and diarrhea.
This can result in diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This
condition affects about 20% of the adult population in the U.S.
A major component of this disorder is inflammation. So, the standard
treatment for IBS consists of the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. Yes, they
do reduce the inflammation but with potential side effects. They also do
nothing to address the leaky gut, so the disease process continues with
dysbiosis and damage to the intestinal lining. They actually can make these
issues worse. So, you become even less effective at breaking down foods and
extracting nutrients and the gut becomes leakier and harder to heal.
You need to focus on removing the source of the inflammation instead of
masking the symptoms. This will alleviate the symptoms while still allowing
the intestinal lining to heal.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
This is the next step beyond IBS. If your IBS continues to develop, it can
become the autoimmune condition of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Now treatment requires a much stronger approach of steroid and immune
suppressant drugs to your current treatment. These known side effects of
these drugs can be very serious. And the leaky gut disorder is still not being
addressed (in conventional treatment it isn’t) so, the damage continues to
the intestinal lining. This treatment, like all drug treatments, acts to mask
the symptoms and to suppress your entire immune system so that it can’t
attack itself. Now common sense tells you that a suppressed immune
15
system is not a good thing. We have an immune system for a very good
reason. It keeps us alive. What is going to protect you from all those
harmful viruses, parasites, bacteria, and yeast/fungi? Can you imagine cold
and flu season without a functioning immune system.
Depression
In the U.S. 1 in 10 people over the age of 12 take medications for
depression. A large percentage of this depression is caused by leaky gut and
thyroid (which is often related to leaky gut – about 70 to 80% in the U.S.)
issues.
Leaky gut can cause a deficiency in Serotonin, your body’s anti-depressant
that is made primarily in your gut. If you have leaky gut, you don’t produce
enough serotonin to prevent depression.
Prescription anti-depressants do nothing to increase your serotonin levels.
They work to keep the too little serotonin you are producing working
overtime. This eventually can deplete more of the serotonin causing you to
sink further and further into depression and requiring an increase in or an
addition to your prescription.
By healing your gut you can restore the ability to naturally produce
serotonin. This can lead to a resolution to your depression and allow you to
get back to yourself. You won’t have to rely on drugs to maintain a healthy
mental state of health.
Anxiety and Poor Sleep
This is the same as depression. The gut produces GABA. This
neurotransmitter helps to control anxiety and promote sleep. Medicines for
sleep, anxiety and alcohol affect GABA.
Again prescription sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medicines and alcohol do
nothing to increase your GABA levels. They too work to keep the too little
GABA you are producing working overtime. This eventually can deplete
16
more of the GABA causing you to experience increased poor sleep and
anxiety and requiring an increase in or an addition to your prescription.
By healing your gut you can restore the ability to naturally produce more
GABA. This can lead to a resolution of your poor sleep and anxiety and
allow you to get back to feeling like yourself. You won’t have to continue
rely on drugs to maintain a healthy mental state of health.
Weight Loss Resistance
I see a lot of women who deal with weight loss resistance. This is where you
are eating right and being active and the weight will not budge. All the
things that worked before just aren’t working this time.
Leaky gut causes weight loss resistance because of the inability to provide
the body with proper micronutrient breakdown. The inflammation and
stress to the body interferes with glucose and insulin control in some.
Indirectly hormone balance can be affected causing the body to store fat
and hang on to it. Often the fat is stored in the belly, hips and buttocks
areas.
Chronic Headaches, Muscle, and Joint Pain
How does your gut cause these pain issues? This is where the body
demonstrates that everything is connected eventually. When you have leaky
gut, you have intestinal inflammation. This inflammation can cross the
intestinal lining and have access to the body. So now inside the body, this
inflammation can travel freely to anywhere in the body. Depending on
where it goes is where you can experience pain. When it goes to the brain
you get a headache. When it goes to muscles you get muscle pain. When it
goes to the joints you get joint pain. Often these pains are treated with
what? Anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen is the usual
recommendation.
For pain that is a result of leaky gut syndrome you get rid of that pain and
inflammation then you have to get rid of the source, the leaky gut.
17
Don’t despair! There is a non-drug answer to leaky gut and related health
issues. You do not have to live your life on dangerous drugs trying to
manage the negative side effects. Actually drugs do not resolve leaky gut
but, allow it to become worse. You must treat the cause for true healing to
occur.

Leaky gut is a complicated condition with many layers.
This is why conventional medicine doesn’t do a good job with Leaky gut. It
treats the symptoms but not treat or correct the real cause.
21
Why Does My Primary Doctor Not Treat
My Leaky Gut
Great question! The simple answer is training.
Conventional doctors only treat diseases that have an insurance code and a
drug to apply for treatment. There is no drug for leaky gut. So, conventional
doctors treat some of the components of digestive issues when a diagnosis
can be applied and there is a drug to treat that symptom. Remember that
none of the drugs actually correct the condition but just ameliorate the
symptoms. (And many times the drugs used to treat make the condition
and others worse.) This means the condition continues to deteriorate and
cause a worsening of the condition or develops into other aggravating and
possibly very serious health problems.
So, to me it’s the difference in disease care or disease control and real
wellness. What we call healthcare in the U.S. is really disease care. A great
system for emergency, acute and end of life care. (This is the training M.D.s
and D.O.s receive in medical school and the hospital.) It’s not so good for
prevention, chronic care and wellness. This is the focus and training of
Functional and Chinese Medicine.
Prevention, Chronic Care, Wellness – this is where the medicine
I practice shines.

Treatment for Leaky Gut
Leaky Gut Treatment
Let’s face it. You have a serious chronic health condition that needs serious
attention. You need a complete plan to accomplish real healing. Many
experts, even the ones that use natural supplements and diet often only
partially treat the condition or just mask some of the symptoms like the
drugs do. Some actually recommend natural medicines that make your
condition worse.
Treatment for leaky gut to work has to be tailored to the
individual. Special testing and a treatment plan that is specific to you are
imperative for true healing. Again, you need serious treatment for a serious
issue. The answer is not found in a drug. The answer is also not found in a
book or a program for sale on the internet. I have treated hundreds who
have tried the one size fits all or the short cut, quick fix plan. That is
understandable because it’s what we would all like – a quick fix.
Unfortunately it just doesn’t exist. After all we are talking about your
health. Isn’t it worth getting it right?
Leaky Gut – The Real Problem
Again, everyone wants relief from their symptoms. Sure, that is the goal
but, it’s not the complete answer. Are you concerned with the source of the
problem? That is where the answer lies.
Most treatment methods and supplements used for treating the various
symptoms of leaky gut act only to relieve the symptoms and others can even
make them worse. But if you are not addressing the underlying root
problem going on in your gut the damage is still being done and your health
is still being compromised.
In the past few years, research has been proving what I have been saying for
the past 20 years. I have known that many of the common chronic
symptoms that patients suffer from are related to leaky gut. That is why
23
most people cannot find an answer to the development of these often wide
ranging symptoms. This exists because leaky gut is a widespread problem
that continues to increase and is overlooked by almost all medical
professionals.
I know that for you to heal your gut you have to achieve a balanced and
properly functioning digestive system. This is done by resolving the
excessive inflammation, by rebalancing the good bacteria, by having the
proper amounts of enzymes and acids and eliminating any harmful
parasites and infections. This is done by testing and then correctly treating.
To treat without testing is like putting oil in your car without knowing if it
low and if it is by how much.
The good news is that this often overlooked problem can be corrected with
my properly researched and clinically tested proven gut healing treatment.
So if Drugs and the quick fixes don’t work……………………………
What Does Work for Resolving Leaky Gut and Your Symptoms?
To get rid of your nagging and chronic symptoms, you have to heal the real
cause your leaky gut.
This treatment usually consists of testing, diet and supplements.
Supplements may include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, cytokines,
herbs, natural antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals. We also use natural
thyroid medicines and bioidentical hormones when appropriate.
Testing will tell us what you have to give your body to rebalance and heal
the gut.
Diet using the right foods will supply the necessary building blocks for
healing. You need to consume healing foods and cut out the foods that are
creating the problem. You will need to consume the foods that you are not
reactive to.
24
Supplements will be used with the diet to help to recreate a well-balanced
environment in your gut so that the healing can take place and finish by
accelerating the healing process. Supplements alone will not heal your leaky
gut. Supplements are designed to supplement a healthy diet and lifestyle. In
cases of leaky gut they are necessary because the body cannot efficiently
extract nutrients from your food. They may also be used to control
inflammation, to treat bacteria, virus, and fungi. As the gut improves and
does its job better you will need less and less supplements.
If you do this, if you do it correctly, you will not only resolve your
symptoms, but you’ll change your life.
25
Here Are Some Tips You Can Start Now
The Importance of Diet and Nutrition
As Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
This is still true today. You need a balanced, healthy diet. The food you eat
gives you life itself. It is a major factor in you having good or bad health and
longevity. It is important to eat real whole foods. Eat fresh, frozen or
organic meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Drink enough clean water.
Limit the simple fast acting carbs or better known as high glycemic foods.
Avoid processed, packaged foods and those with added or artificial
sweeteners.
There is an old saying, “It takes life to give life”. Sure, you can look at this
saying from many different perspectives but let’s look at one that most
people overlook. It takes life (energy) for you to live every single day. Think
of it as the cycle of life. Where do you get this life? From the food you eat
and the air you breathe. They are the fuel for the unique machine that is
you.
Then, does it not make perfect sense that real foods that are full of life
would be the best choice?
Worst Foods for Leaky Gut Healing and What to Replace Them
With
Many of the replacement ideas are commonly found in your regular grocery
store. If you cannot find them then almost all are available at your local
health food store.
I realize that you may be sensitive to and need to avoid some of the foods
suggested. This is why you need to work with an expert that uses a
personalized treatment plan.
26
1. Eliminate Common White Foods
We have all been told to avoid eating white foods because they are bad for
us.
Wheat & White Flour
Everyone knows that white bread is bad for you. It is highly processed
wheat flour that has everything removed and is left with nothing but sugar.
But now white bread has been replaced by the heralded wheat bread as the
“healthy alternative”. The truth is that it has been estimated that about 50%
of the population is intolerant to wheat/gluten. The protein is indigestible
by humans. So it doesn’t matter if you prefer whole and white, if you can’t
digest it properly then it will literally burn up your intestines anytime you
eat it.
Don’t fear. There are plenty of alternatives so that you don’t feel like you are
totally missing out on the things you love.
Replace your wheat or white bread with a gluten-free alternative rice or
millet bread.
Replace your pasta with gluten-free rice or quinoa pasta.
Replace your cereal with gluten-free oats, millet, buckwheat (not really
wheat), and/or eggs.
Replace your wheat flour with rice, corn, or buckwheat flour.
2. Pasteurized Cow’s Dairy
Dairy has become a staple in our diet not because it is so good for us but
because of great advertising. It is not the best way to get vitamin D, calcium
or anything but sugar. A glass of milk is about ½ the sugar of a cola. Whole
or fat doesn’t matter. That is the fat content.
Most everyone has some dairy intolerance. There are naturally occurring
enzymes in milk that help aid in the digestive process but these are all killed
during the pasteurization process. This makes it even harder for you to
digest milk. So many people have negative reactions to dairy that range
from as little as a runny nose to severe digestive discomfort. These are all
signs of intolerance. Where there is intolerance, there is damage occurring.
27
There are some better alternatives that you are much less likely intolerant
to.
Replace cow’s milk with dairy-free coconut, rice, oat, or almond milk.
Replace cow’s milk cheese with goat cheese, farmer’s cheese, or a raw
milk cheese only if you can tolerate. You can also try to stick with harder
cheeses as these contain less of the milk proteins that typically cause the
intolerance.
3. Sugar
Added sugars are one of the greatest causes of health issues. Sugar kills. It
is a primary cause of inflammation and inflammation is the foundation for
all chronic health issues.
Intestinal damage has occurred and you have developed leaky gut. The
intestinal lining is responsible for producing the digestive enzymes required
to break down the food you eat. With the damage that has occurred you can
no longer break down sugar. You might even think this is a good thing. But
if you are not digesting the sugar, it begins to ferment in your intestines. It
becomes an all you can eat buffet for the harmful parasites, bacteria, and
yeast/fungi allowing them to multiply and continue to wreak havoc inside
your gut! This is another factor that drives leaky gut and must be addressed
in order to heal.
There are so many products out there that are literally loaded with high
amounts of sugar. And many of them are made with highly processed and
chemically altered sugar such as high fructose corn syrup. The adverse
health effects are already well noted even though it continues to find its way
onto grocery store shelves.
Replace soda with an herbal tea. Many herbal teas have the benefit of
healing properties. But do not use the bottled ones that are loaded with
sugar.
Replace fruit juice & energy drinks with freshly juiced vegetables that
still contain the enzymes to aid in proper digestion.
28
Replace meal replacement bars and processed snack foods with nuts,
seeds, and fruit.
Replace candies & pastries with a piece of fruit.
4. Foods Containing Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners are better than sugar right? Considering that 80-85%
of all complaints received by the FDA are from aspartame (NutraSweet)
alone, you might want to think again. Artificial sweeteners are really toxic
synthetic chemicals that are created in a lab to mimic the sweetness of
sugar. You see them as a sweet alternative but your body sees them as a
toxic invader. They have been linked to weight issues, cancer, chronic
fatigue, and migraines to name a few. They are also a significant source of
inflammation in the digestive tract. New studies show that they also kill the
good bacteria and contribute to dysbiosis.
There have even been studies done that prove that even though you aren’t
consuming real sugar, you brain interprets that you are and elicits the same
hormonal response. But now your body is waiting for real sugar and when it
does not get it, it craves sugar more!
Replace diet soda with an herbal tea. Many herbal teas have the benefit
of healing properties. But do not use the bottled ones that are loaded
with sugar.
Replace sugar-free yogurt with an unsweetened yogurt and sweeten with
stevia.
Replace sugar-free gum with an all-natural gum sweetened with stevia.
5. Soy / Tofu
Soy is another product along with wheat that gets put into everything. Soy
is advertised as a wonderful health food but I’m here to set the record
straight. I can hear you now – the Asian population consumes large
amounts of soy without health issues. Like most foods in the U.S., soy is
processed and often GMO. As with most foods that are processed, soy’s
effect on your body can change. There is also some thought that Asians may
have a genetic ability to better deal with soy.
29
I find that many people are highly intolerant to soy. Even for those who are
not, the dangers of soy far outweigh any health benefit. Soy naturally
contains several toxins and is typically processed using even more toxic
chemicals. It contains nutrient inhibitors that prevent you from being able
to absorb minerals and break down protein. Soy has been proven to depress
thyroid function, lead to infertility, and increase the risk of breast cancer. It
has an estrogenic effect.
Many people may think that they don’t even have soy in their diet but if you
were to read the food labels you would find that many products are made
with soybean oil.
Replace soy or tofu products with the real meat and/or eggs.
Replace vegetable oil (soybean oil) with olive oil for sautéing and
coconut oil for higher temperatures.
Replace store bought salad dressing (soybean oil) with a mix of olive oil
and balsamic or apple cider vinegar.
6. Table Salt
White table salt is far from the real naturally occurring salt you think it is.
In reality it is a group of processed toxic chemicals that mimics real salt and
creates inflammation in the digestive tract. Aside from containing over 30
synthetic and toxic chemicals, the white table salt that is commonly used
today is actually a crude oil waste byproduct. To make it clean looking
enough to eat, toxic bleach is used to remove all color leaving it white.
All of the studies done on the adverse health effects of salt are done using
table salt. Because of this, salt in general gets a bad rap.
There is a healthier salt. You can replace white table salt with all natural
Celtic or Himalayan Sea Salt. These salts are harvested from naturally
occurring salt deposits and contain many trace minerals that are required
by the body. You will know if you have found the right salt because it will be
grey or pink in color from the mineral content.
30
7. Other Processed Foods
If it is processed your body is not designed to deal with it. Processed foods
should be a no brainer especially after reading about the foods above.
Processed foods are loaded with toxic chemicals and preservatives and are
deficient in nutrients and fiber. Your body doesn’t know how to process
these foods. It doesn’t even recognize them as foods and has no idea what
to do with them. What does happen is they provide poor nutritional value
as well as causing harm leading to intestinal inflammation and leaky gut.
All of these toxic chemicals have to be processed by the liver which
overworks the liver and further contributes to leaky gut.
It is easy to make some simple changes in this area.
If a food is not fresh or frozen or if it has a long shelf life, then don’t eat it.
Processed foods have all of the life removed from them. This is why you can
leave processed food out and mold won’t even touch it! Have you seen the
experiments that have been done with fast food products like McDonald’s
hamburgers and fries?
After years and years of being left in the open, they look exactly the same as
they did when they were first bought. If mold won’t eat it, you shouldn’t eat
it either.
Replace packaged foods with fresh whole foods like meats, fruits, and
vegetables.
Add These Foods to Promote the Healing of Your Leaky Gut
1. Fish Oil
Fish oil is one of nature’s most potent natural anti-inflammatory foods. It
contains more Vitamin A & D than any other common food. These vitamins
are essential for strengthening immune system and the health of the
intestinal lining. Fish oil is also known to benefit healthy heart, circulation,
brain, skin, bones, and joints.
31
Fish oil comes in liquid or in a pill form. If you are one that suffers from the
unpleasantness of burping after taking fish oil, try freezing the pills first
before taking them!
Caution: use only high quality fish oil. They can be hard to find. This is
why we have our own brand. It is triple purified and clinically proven.
2. Raw Garlic
Garlic is used in whole and herbal forms. Raw garlic has amazing health
and healing benefits. It is highly anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-
fungal. It is also high in antioxidants. It has been proven to stimulate the
immune system, suppress the growth of tumors, and reduce the risk of
heart disease.
Garlic can be extremely helpful in the diet for leaky gut. It will help balance
the gut biome which is imperative essential to healing.
3. Raw Ginger
Ginger has been a gut healing food used in Chinese Medicine for thousands
of years. It has amazing health and healing benefits. It naturally reduces
inflammation in the digestive tract without the adverse side effects. It is
high in antioxidants and proven to help balance blood sugar and
cholesterol. It is typically used to alleviate arthritis and nausea.
Ginger is another extremely helpful food for leaky gut. It helps reduce the
inflammation created by food intolerances and toxins.
4. Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is greatly known for its anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-
fungal properties. It is a great source of antioxidants and is one of the
healthiest fats you will find. It has been shown to benefit many conditions
from high blood pressure to cancer.
32
If you are not using coconut oil regularly in your diet, you are missing out
on the vast benefits. Because it is such a stable fat, it is great for use in
cooking at higher temperatures.
5. Broth
When I was young homemade bone broth was a staple in my mom’s
kitchen. You have to make this one. In East Tennessee homemade bone
broths were considered a cure for most things. Bone broth is loaded with
minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When in broth, these minerals
are easy for the body to absorb. It is also a source of gelatin which is high in
amino acids which are a part of leaky gut healing.
Homemade broth is a big bang for your buck. It costs next to nothing to
make. If you are unsure on how to make homemade broth, there are recipes
online.
Diet and Nutrition Conclusion
Most Americans and I use to be one of them have many of the “should
avoid foods” included in their diets. Most of us eat them in large amounts –
often more than we realize.
I hope you are among the few and not using many of these gut damaging
foods. If so, you can begin to eliminate them and to incorporate more of the
gut healing ones.
If you were using them, now would be a good day to stop and start adding
the good foods. By eating a diet that consists of whole foods that are high in
protein, fiber, and healthy fats, you will be on your way to resolving your
symptoms and conditions. You will be on your way to Wellness.
Diet is a major part of fixing leaky gut but it is only one part. You need to do
the complete Leaky Gut Protocol which consists of -
• Testing – standard and specialty labs - Testing will tell us what you have
to give your body to rebalance and heal the gut
• Dietary changes -
33
• Supplements - taking the correct ones for you. Supplements may include
vitamins, minerals, amino acids, cytokines, herbs, natural antibiotics,
antivirals, and antifungals
If needed
• Stress control
• Hormone balancing - bioidentical hormones
• Thyroid treatment - natural thyroid medicines
If all this sounds too hard or complicated, rest assured that I will make it all
simple and easy. I’ll walk you through every step of the program making
adjustments as you heal. I have helped thousands.
Once the program is started your symptoms could begin to disappear in
days.
Forget your days of suffering and trying to manage your nagging and
chronic symptoms. Get to the bottom of your health problems and
overcome your symptoms by healing your gut.
Stop feeling bad from a myriad of health issues even after natural and drug
treatments.
The fatigued, depressed, and symptomatic you will be replaced by the
happy, healthy, and more energetic you.
But like everything in life, the choice is yours.
What about cleanses?
I’m always hearing people talk about how cleanses are so good for you and
how they keep you healthy.
Think again.
Are they going to make up for or heal an unhealthy gut? In my opinion
most cleanses are too harsh. They can actually do more damage. Some may
34
damage the good / bad bacteria balance. Forced detoxification is not
typically healthy, especially with leaky gut.
When you do this, you are forcing the toxic substances back into your
system that your body has stored away because it was too overloaded to
properly remove them. This creates a huge stress on the body.
For starters, this creates a toxic environment within the body that is
suitable for harmful parasites, bacteria, and yeast/fungi. The liver then has
to process all of these toxins which can easily overload and overstress the
liver. Remember, you have leaky gut and your liver is already overstressed!
And if you are constipated and your bowels are not moving properly, you
won’t be able to eliminate the toxins that your body is trying to get rid of. In
the end, you just released a bunch of toxins that just end up getting
reabsorbed into your body. The idea of clearing out the toxins is not bad in
itself. But, the idea of clearing out the garbage to only replace it with more
garbage is a bad idea.
I recommend that patients use a safe gentle way to detoxify and not by
forcing but, by supporting the detoxification process. I support your lymph
system, intestines, kidneys, liver and extra cellular matrix and cellular
activity through the detoxification process by the use of proper diet,
nutrition, correct supplementation and lifestyle. This method actually
supports the body in its role of detoxification and helps it do its job
efficiently and effectively.

What Patients Are Saying
By following my treatment plan, you might be able to accomplish this level
of success…
"When I started working with Dr. Saylor I had been living with an
autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto’s for eleven years. I was exhausted
physically and emotionally from years of living with a chronic condition.
My thyroid medication had been increased several times but I still had
symptoms. I was exhausted, losing hair, constipated, bloating, reflux, cold
hands and feet, and could not lose weight. Dr. Saylor explained how “leaky
gut” was part of the cause of Hashimoto’s and to treat Hashimoto’s you had
to treat the leaky gut. He tested me for my thyroid and digestive functions
and put me on a program that helped my mood and energy. My hair is
growing back, my constipation and reflux is gone and I don’t feel cold all
the time. My follow up testing shows an improvement in my thyroid. I
wasn't sure a drastic change in my diet and supplements would fix what
medications didn’t but I had to try. I feel as though the diet change has
decreased my immune response and improved the quality of my life. Thank
you Dr. Saylor!" – Stacey, Palm Harbor, Florida
I thought all of my health complaints of constipation, diarrhea, and
bloating were just normal. It wasn’t until after my child was born that my
digestive problems worsened into Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Then
my weight increased and no matter how I dieted and exercised I couldn’t
lose weight. I talked to my doctor who told me to change my diet. I followed
the advice but only got worse with more weight gain, worse IBS, headaches,
joint pains, and no energy. I went to see Dr. Saylor and he treated me for
leaky gut and adrenal fatigue. In a month I felt so much better and after 3
months all my symptoms were gone. I didn’t know how bad I felt until I got
better. Dr. Saylor will be my doctor for life. Elise, Tampa, Florida
I tried an online “expert” consultant and their leaky gut program after I
decided I had leaky gut that was causing my problems. These problems
were poor memory, migraines, anxiety, depression, fatigue, hair loss,
36
metabolic syndrome, food sensitivities and constipation, bloating and gas.
The program helped a little but I soon realized I needed a real expert who
had more training and could do more than an online consultant. Dr. Saylor
did a complete evaluation and testing for my gut, adrenals, hormones, and
thyroid. He taught me more during my first visit about my issues than I
learned from the other consultant during the entire program. Following Dr.
Saylor’s recommendations all of my problems are gone except I have a few
more pounds to lose. To quote Dr. Saylor, “You can do it right or you can
do it over and over again”. Heather, Dunedin, Florida
I first saw Dr. Saylor because I was suffering from an auto-immune disease
that attacks my thyroid causing it to enlarge. I had my thyroid removed and
now must live on medication for the rest of my life. So even without a
thyroid and on medication I still had symptoms of low thyroid. Dr. Saylor
explained to me that just taking thyroid medicine didn’t address the
autoimmune component. He told me that my leaky gut was part of the
cause of my autoimmune disorder. After being treated by Dr. Saylor I
found my symptoms improved with many of them being completely
resolved. All I can say is that I wish I would have known what was
happening when I first started having small digestive issues that I just
dismissed as no big deal. If I had seen Dr. Saylor then for early treatment it
may have prevented the autoimmune disorder and I might still have my
thyroid and years less of nagging health issues. Rachel, Clearwater, FL
“When I first went to see Dr. Saylor, I thought I was in good health and
wanted to stay that way. I was eating a healthy diet, exercised and used
supplements to enhance my health. Even with all this I knew something
wasn’t quite right because although I ate healthy my “normal” digestive
issues got worse. I constantly had constipation, bloating, and horrible foul
smelling gas. I also had chronic candida yeast infections. Talk about
embarrassing! I was skeptical at first that something other than drugs
might be the answer. Well I’m not skeptical anymore. I can’t begin to
describe how good I feel. I had no idea that all of the problems were from
my Leaky Gut and were only worsened by my supplements. By making the
right dietary changes and taking the right supplements, I was able to heal
37
my Leaky Gut and become symptom free. I feel great. Thanks Dr. Saylor,
you are the best! Annie, Clearwater, FL
“Dr. Saylor’s treatment plan of diet, lifestyle, and supplement program
worked for my digestive issues. I was diagnosed with GERD and was put on
Nexium. I had some relief with the medication but still had symptoms. I
also didn’t like the thought of being on a medication forever or the side
effect of weaker bones. A friend told me about Dr. Saylor and I gave him a
call. After just a couple of weeks my symptoms were improving with better
digestion. I was also sleeping better with less snoring. Just sleeping better
gave me more energy and a better mood. Now 6 months after starting on
the program I have been able to discontinue the use of Nexium and no
longer have gastric reflux. I continue to sleep through the night and wake
up feeling rested and refreshed. I have also lost weight and just feel better.

About Dr. Saylor
From Years of Studying, Research, and Dealing With My Own
Health Problems…
I have put together a treatment protocol with all the necessary components
to heal leaky gut and resolve many chronic health symptoms for good.
As with many healthcare practitioners, we look for answers to health issues
that we, family members or friends experience.
I like many others have a family history of many illness including cancer,
arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and leaky gut. My mother suffered obesity,
thyroid (probably Hashimoto’s), hormone imbalances, diabetes, heart
disease, and leaky gut throughout her adult life. Later in life she also
suffered and died from the accumulation of all these – cancer. My father
also suffered with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and leaky gut. He died
from gallbladder surgery that resulted in sepsis. My oldest brother suffered
with diabetes, heart disease, and leaky gut. He lost his life to lung cancer.
So, this is a mission to me. I want to stop the suffering that can be
prevented, stopped or reversed for most of us.
Personally, I suffered with leaky gut which resulted in food and chemical
sensitivities. I use to be in the E.R. one to two times a month for a tongue
swollen to the size of my mouth. After following my protocol, I have not
been in an E.R. in the past 19 years.
Based on my family’s and my personal history, I focused on this area of
medicine. I wanted to offer real answers not just treatment to control the
symptoms. I wanted to be the best. I have spent thousands of hours since
finishing school in continuing education on these topics. I have even
developed continuing education programs that I teach to doctors on these
topics.
Leaky Gut
40
So after 10 years of graduate and post-graduate education, thousands of
hours of continuing education and 20 years of clinical practice, I am
confident in my ability to help you find the answer to this serious chronic
health issue.
41
The Choice – It’s Yours
I hope this e-book has provided beneficial information. I hope you can now
see there is a safe and effective answer.
The choice is yours. You can choose to continue on your current path and
ignore the real problem. You can continue to allow your health to decline
and continue to try drugs and supplements in hope of finding the magic pill
that will take all your symptoms and problems away. All the while, your
leaky gut continues to get worse until you develop some sort of more
serious disease. And in all probability a connection between your gut and
illness will never be made.
Or you can choose to take control of your health and resolve your
symptoms. You can choose to pursue a real answer by addressing the
problem at the root cause and not just treat the symptoms.
If you are currently treating your leaky gut and just managing the
symptoms of with little to no relief, then you are not getting to the cause of
the problem. These chronic conditions do not resolve themselves and the
problem could be getting worse.
Whether you are experiencing minor or serious symptoms that are new or
are long term, you need to take steps to heal your leaky gut. It is one of the
most important things you can do to relieve your symptoms and improve
your current and future health.
Remember that although you may have only mild symptoms now leaky gut
can lead to serious issues such as autoimmune disease. So reverse your
leaky gut now and don’t wait until you develop serious health conditions or
disease.
So, are you ready to heal?
