In spite of water being so fundamental to our survival, 32 billion cubic meters a year is lost due to leaks in water mains around the world. This means that 25% of all urban drinking water is lost forever. Detecting and fixing leaks is difficult and expensive.
To address this problem, Curapipe Ltd has developed its unique Trenchless Automated Leakage Repair (TALR) solution. Water utilities can now benefit from a service that automatically detects, seals, and cures typical leakage in their distribution network pipes without the need for digging up streets.

Curapipe’s TALR solution is unique, since it does not work like commonly known “detect-and-fix” or pipe replacement solutions. As the only Trenchless Automated Leakage Repair solution known in the market, it has created a whole new category consisting of a low-cost method for bulk leakage reduction without the need to dig up and repair/replace water mains.
TALR Solution
The LEAKCURE project aims at the market uptake of Curapipe’s TALR trenchless method of repairing small water pipes leakages with trenchless technology and without previous detection. This technology automatically finds leaking holes and cracks, seals and cures them permanently.
The high level objective of the LEAKCURE project is to support rapid market penetration, adoption and replication of this breakthrough leak repair technology for water mains distribution networks in Europe.
The project is co-funded by the European Union within the CIP Eco-Innovation initiative of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Program CIP, under grant agreement ECO/10/276697/SI2.595553

1 2 3A pig train (Curapipe's
curing substances wedged between two pigs) is launched into a pipe section via an
upstream fire hydrant.
The pig train exits thepipe via a downstream
fire hydrant.
Leaky holes and cracks are self-detected. Curapipe’s
special viscous curing substances automatically
seals and permanently cures the detected leaks.
1. A PIG train is launched into an isolated section of the water mains via an upstream fire hydrant or hot tap.
2. The PIG train contains a “compartment” consisting of Curapipe’s unique viscous curing substance lodged between two PIGs.
3. The substance operates under pressure, and automatically detects and seals leaky joints, fittings service connections.
4. The PIG train is typically extracted through a downstream fire hydrant.
5. The substance hardens and leaks are permanently cured.

Automated detection, sealing and curing of leaks
Much faster than replacement or renewal
Compared to pipeline replacement / renewal
TALR provides a low-cost alternative for pipeline replacement/renewal. By taking a completely different approach, TALR is ideally suited for bulk repair, since:
• It is trenchless (no dig) which ensures low disruption of environment and urban life
• It enables automated detection, sealing and permanent curing of leaks
• It is a low-cost alternative for pipe replacement/renewal
• It provides rapid bulk reduction of leakage
Benefits
Leakage Reduction in European Water Mains
07
• Provides a long-term cure for leaks that will last for the lifespan of the water mains
• Eliminates the need to replace or renew buried water distribution infrastructure that is still serviceable
• Finds and repairs underground leakage that go unnoticed by standard methods
• Reduces pumping energy costs, carbon emissions and water treatment chemicals
• Avoids social and environmental disruption
Long-Term Benefits
Leakage Reduction in European Water Mains

The LEAKCURE project focuses on reducing wastage as its core offering, namely reducing water loss through leakage reduction in urban distribution pipelines. LEAKCURE has introduced Curapipe’s TALR technology for dealing with leak repair of all types at low cost without the need to pre-detect the leaks beforehand.
For the last few years, TALR has proved itself to be a highly effective, low-cost solution that also minimizes the social impact on urban life and the environment. The value proposition of TALR is clearly understood and market feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Curapipe receives various queries and requests from all over the world at a weekly basis asking about the availability of TALR solution and its operational aspects of applicability and deployment.

The market for TALR is worldwide. Curapipe’s target markets are both in the developed world (49% of global leakage) and the developing world (51% of global leakage). Customers are mainly water utilities and operators of water infrastructure such as municipalities.
Curapipe collaborated with Thames Water in London for product development and testing. For further commercialization, Thames and Curapipe are working together with the Eight2O consortium for rollout in the UK. TALR is certified in the UK for use in its drinking water infrastructure.
Two other field tests were carried out with Hagihon, the Jerusalem Water Utility, and Mei Carmel, the Haifa Water Utility. Test results confirm TALR’s effectiveness in detecting and repairing small leaks and cracks that are responsible for most of the water loss.
Other interested water companies that are in negotiations with Curapipe include: Suez Environment, Severn Trent, United Utilities, Welsh Water, Anglian Water, Yorkshire Water, Moscow Canal, ACEA, Hera Gruppo, and the Saur Group.
TALR is perfectly positioned to help European water utilities to save millions of liters of drinking water per day. Furthermore, TALR’s bulk leakage reduction also has the potential to save tens of megawatt-hours of fossil energy daily. By saving fossil energy, bulk leakage reduction will also have a positive impact on the greenhouse gas footprint of water utilities. Potential savings could be as high as tens of thousands of carbon credits each year.

Established in 2007, Curapipe System Ltd. is a pioneering provider of an innovative breakthrough leak curing solution for buried pipelines. Curapipe addresses the need of urban water utilities by repairing leaks and cracks in their mains and service connections that normally remain undetected. The solution is the result of many years of development by a team of highly skilled and experienced PhD technologists in the fields of hydraulics, materials and pipelining. Curapipe is working with several water utilities to commercially deploy its TALR solution at various global locations. Under the framework of the European Eco-Innovation program, Curapipe is executing the LEAKCURE project aimed at market uptake of a method of repairing leakages in distribution water pipes applying trenchless technology.
