Message from the President
How is the world better because of Junior
League?
Marketing professionals from all backgrounds
will tell you that audiences, especially younger
ones, want to know how your brand is making
the world a better place. If you can convince
them you’re making a difference, then they
are more willing to buy your products, use
your services or join your organization. And
if you do it really well, they willingly become
ambassadors for your brand, encouraging
others to support you, too.
Last year, Airbnb launched a social
media campaign with the hashtag
#OneLessStranger. They asked people
to perform random acts of hospitality for
strangers, then share a video or photo with
the recipient of their good deed. Within three
weeks of launching, the campaign generated
more than 3 million posts. While that’s
an impressive amount of goodwill toward
strangers, the more impressive business
result was the company doubling its bookings
to 80 million in 2015.
Coca-Cola has a long history of supporting
communities around the world by investing
in essential resources like nutrition and
education. In Egypt, the company has built
hundreds of clean water installations in rural
villages that otherwise wouldn’t have access
to potable water. Coke sponsors Ramadan
meals for children throughout the Middle East
and school improvements across India. And
for Coca-Cola consumers who don’t live in
developing countries, the company makes the
world a better place by promoting happiness
as their core value. It pays off: Coca-Cola is
the world’s fourth most profitable brand with
a market value of $179.9 billion.
Political scientist Alan Wolfe explained
why this approach is so successful for
businesses. “When a moral decision has
to be made,” he wrote, “[nearly all people]
look into themselves – at their own interests,
desires, needs, sensibilities, identities and
inclinations – before they choose the right
course of action.” In other words, people can
choose any product, service or organization
they want when it comes to investing their
money and time, so if yours makes them feel
like a better person, then it’s an added bonus
they will choose more often than not.
The mission of Junior League of Chattanooga
is to promote voluntarism, develop the
potential of women and improve the
community. Our initial response may be that
we make the world a better place through
Kids in the Kitchen, Mini-Grants or Seeds of
Change, but I would argue that we make the
world better by helping our members discover
how amazing they can be as leaders.
When a League member hones her leadership
abilities, it makes her a better person overall.
She’s a better friend, wife, mother, sister,
daughter, businessperson, neighbor and
citizen, because she understands that she
can make a difference and she knows how to
go about doing it.
The world is, in fact, better because of Junior
League, and Junior League is better because
of you.

Sunday, May 22 I 4-5:30pm I League House
The final selection for this League year is The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Join us at the League house Sunday, May 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for a lively discussion about the book and ways it can positively impact our lives. Space is limited, and registration is available at jlchatt.org on the Membership Calendar. Participants earn one Education & Training membership credit, and Sustainers are welcome!
About the book: Nearly every time you see him, he’s laughing, or at least smiling. And he makes everyone else around him feel like smiling. He’s the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, a Nobel Prize winner, and a hugely sought-after speaker and statesman. Why is he so popular? Even after spending only a few minutes in his presence you can’t help feeling happier.
If you ask him if he’s happy, even though he’s suffered the loss of his country, the Dalai Lama will give you an unconditional yes. What’s more, he’ll tell you that happiness is the purpose of life, and that the very motion of our life is toward happiness. How to get there has always been the question. He’s tried to answer it before, but he’s never had the help of a psychiatrist to get the message across in a context we can easily understand.
The Art of Happiness is the book that started the genre of happiness books, and it remains the cornerstone of the field of positive psychology.
Through conversations, stories, and meditations, the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day anxiety, insecurity, anger, and discouragement. Together with Dr. Howard Cutler, he explores many facets of everyday life, including relationships, loss, and the pursuit of wealth, to illustrate how to ride through life’s obstacles on a deep and abiding source of inner peace. Based on 2,500 years of Buddhist meditations mixed with a healthy dose of common sense, The Art of Happiness is a book that crosses the boundaries of traditions to help readers with difficulties common to all human beings. After being in print for ten years, this book has touched countless lives and uplifted spirits around the world.

The Designer Showhouse Committee has been working hard in preparation for the first ever Designer Showhouse, scheduled to open to the public Saturday, June 4.
The selected Showhouse is a circa 1910s style home, which will feature both local and regional designers who will each redesign a specific room in the home. Each designer will draw inspiration from the history of the property and Chattanooga’s histroy as well. This one-of-a-kind unique transformation will create a modern and livable space in a historic Chattanooga home.
Proceeds from the Designer Showhouse will benefit the JLC and its mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The Food Bank collection competition at the April GMM was between the Holiday Event committee and the Food Bank committee. The Food Bank committee won the contest and the winner of the drawing was Courtney Painter! Courtney won $25 in Auntie Anne’s pretzel coupons from Northgate Mall donated by Mike and Lisa Tanner. We collected 72 pounds of green beans and $100 at the April GMM. We are already at 1,299 pounds donated and $850 collected this League year. This has been an INCREDIBLE year for our partnership with the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
The Food Bank collection competition at the March GMM was between Sustainer Events and The Designer Showhouse. The Designer Showhouse committee won the contest and the winner of the drawing was McKenzie Rainey! McKenzie won foaming self tanner from Rodan and Fields, donated by Amber Terakedis.
Did you know that the League year doesn’t stop in May? Our Family Nights at the Food Bank go through the summer months as well. Our next Family Night is scheduled for Thursday, June 2. Please sign up on the volunteer calendar if you plan on attending. Be sure to include numbers if you plan to bring your kids and guests so that we can properly coordinate the activity with the Food Bank. You receive three (3) Community Engagement credits for attending each Family Night.
At the May GMM we will be collecting cans of tuna (6 cans). May’s collection competition is between the Tour Committee, Centennial committee and the Board. Members of these committees, please be prepared to donate as much cash or food at the GMM in May as you can. Each member who donates from the winning committee will be entered in a drawing to win a fabulous gift. Remember, cash gets you two (2) points towards the competition. As always, all member donations are welcome and appreciated at the GMMs. *To clarify, food and monetary donations each month count for one (1) credit towards your League requirements. For the competition, you can get unlimited points- two (2) for each check written for $25 and one (1) for each set of food donations.
To see an impact, if you donate just $10 to the Food Bank, that amount could purchase nearly three times what you could buy and donate for the same cost. Please consider writing a check for $25 at the GMMs (even just once during the League year) rather than bringing your food items to not only get your credits, but to help the Food Bank support even more people in need.
Have an amazing summer and thank you for such a wonderful year with the Food Bank!

The Provisional Development Committee and Provisionals have been hard at work this year. They had a large, diverse and skilled group of 31 Provisionals that have met their requirements will be voted into Active status at the Annual May Dinner on May 2.
Since the Contract Signing back in July, they have had a successful Provisional Retreat, volunteered for the Holiday Soiree and Food Bank Family Nights, and look forward to volunteering this June for the Designer Showhouse in June. Throughout the year, the Provisionals have had numerous mixers and holiday parties that have been wonderful bonding experiences. The Provisional year couldn’t have ended any better than executing a beautiful Daffodil Brunch for their Provisional Project.
They have also been very dedicated in attending the GMMs, and their own PMMs. All in all, the Provisionals have had a huge presence this year, and we can’t brag enough about their dedication to the JLC. Many thanks to the PDC Assistant Chair and all of the Advisors for making this year a great success!
