Background
åTo create a scientific forum for information exchangeon genomics of all types of organisms in the tropicsfor conservation and sustainable utilizationpurposes.åTo build a network and cooperation among scientists
working on genomics research in the region andthose in other regions.åTo create a consortium for genomics of tropical
organisms, especially in South East Asia.
One day seminar on 20 December 2011 willserve as forum for information exchange and
knowledge sharing among participants, where variousaspects of recent genomics research conducted bothin the region and other regions will be discussed.
The following one day workshop on 21December 2011 will be devoted to learning process onrecent methodologies an protocols, also possibility of forming a consortium of tropical genome fromSoutheast Asia, as well as developing a collaborative, strategic plan among participants in the region.
Tropical biodiversity is the world's veryvaluable assets. It provides food, feeds, clothing, and shelter for a large portion of the world'spopulation. However, the tropical genetic resourcesare not only underutilized, they are also in danger of being lost due to the destruction of natural habitats at
their sites of origin, the high costs of conservationprograms, and our lack of appreciation of the worthof these precious resources. There is a critical needfor assessing the richness of tropical geneticresources for conservation and future sustainableutilization. Assessment of genetic resources ascomponent of biodiversity, which was previouslydone using molecular markers has limitation, sincesuch markers could not access the whole genome of the organisms.
The rapid advance in genomics has drawnmany attentions as new and more powerful tool toasses and study genetic resources, also to solve
some problems that have long been obstacles totraditional breeding program. Genomics is the studyof how genes and genetic information are organizedwithin the genome, and how this organizationdetermines their function. The application of genomics is dramatically improving capacity toexplore the genetic constitution of many importantspecies. Together with the growing number of partialand complete genomic sequences, high-throughputand massively parallel genotyping platforms areincreasingly coming on stream, allowing the analysisof transcripts, proteins, and pathways and, moreimportantly, helping to extract useful variability from
the wealth of resources stored in germplasm banks.Genomic analysis of tropical species promises toadd new dimensions to growing informationavailable about morphology, physiology, and parallelevolution in diverse lineages of organisms. Geneticresources, which provide the raw materials, shouldinteract with both advanced biological exploration, which provides an understanding of the geneticbasis of traits, and breeding programs, which realizethe value by applying conventional and advanced

methods to produce new and improved varieties andbreeds. Using functional genomics approach, improvement program relies on a profoundunderstanding of the genetic basis of functionaldiversity that will serve to broaden organismadaptation and improve productivity by the stacking of new or existing favorable alleles.
