On behalf of the Royals family welcome to the inaugural issue of

Going the Distance, the official community outreach publication of the

Kansas City Royals. Our goal is simple, to make a difference in the

lives of those in need throughout the Royals region.

We hope this publication results in further collaboration

with our community partners to positively impact our

community’s youth, education and neighborhoods.

Please join us in looking back at the off-season

community activities and a look at what is ahead. We

look forward to working together!

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,

Dan Glass President, Kansas City Royals

2005 brought a significant milestone for Royals Charities! The charitable arm of the Kansas City Royals surpassed the $2 million mark in grants distributed! Since 2001, Royals Charities has donated over $2.2 million to impactful programs that invest in children, education and neighborhoods.

“Surpassing the $2 million mark in contributions is made possible only through the continued commitment and contributions of our players and their wives,

our associates, our family, and our fans,” said Royals President Dan Glass. “We are pleased to donate to several worthy non-profit organizations throughout the year and look forward to continuing to support charitable causes that help make Kansas City a better place.”

“…and the 2005 Man of the Year is…”Yep, that’s our Mike! Mike Sweeney was

recognized as the 2005 Players’ Choice Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award recipient as voted on by fellow Major League players. The award is given annually to the player in either league whose on-field performance and contribution to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement.

That’s a big honor, but Mike’s work in the community certainly earned him the distinction.

Mike and his wife, Shara, are extremely active in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. Mike serves as spokesperson for RBI and established the “Swing with Sweeney” program to challenge others to join him to pledge a donation for each RBI he collects. Additionally, the Sweeneys

committed $100,000 to build the “Sweeney Family Field” in Kansas City. Mike also appears in public service announcements and established an annual outstanding character award in his name for an RBI participant.

To allow others to experience Major League Baseball, Mike regularly invites area charity and non-profit groups to attend Royals games as his guests and become members of the “Sween Team.” Since 2003, the five-time All-Star has purchased tickets and souvenirs for nearly 2,200 kids.

In addition, Mike passionately supports a

number of faith-based outreach programs in the Kansas City area and across the country. Since 2001, he has teamed up with former Kansas City Chiefs running back Tony Richardson to host the Sweeney-Richardson Golf Classic, raising more than $140,000 for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action.

Mike serves as the National Spokesman for LIFE TEEN, an international Catholic

ministry dedicated to helping teens grow in their faith and strongly supports Character that Counts, an organization committed to building Christian character and leadership.

Nationally, Mike actively supports the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation and the Prostate Cancer

Foundation. It is easy to see why Mike Sweeney was

named the “Man of the Year.” We are lucky to have Mike as our Man of Kansas City!

Royals Charities will be supporting physically challenged youth through its largest fundraiser, the Baseball ‘N Blues party. The event is set for Monday, June 19 in the Midwest Airlines Crown Club at Kauffman Stadium, with proceeds benefi ting the Kansas City YMCA Challenger Division Baseball Park.

The park will feature a custom-designed baseball fi eld with synthetic turf used to accommodate wheelchairs and other assistive devices. It removes the barriers that normally keep children with mental and physical disabilities off of the diamond. It will be the fi rst fi eld of its kind in the Kansas City area.

Challenger Division Baseball was created in 1989 to provide opportunities for children with disabilities to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. But it is more than playing a game. The Challenger Division is about making new friends, building self-esteem and being treated just like any other kid. To help athletes, the Challenger Division uses a “buddy” system in which each player is paired with an able-bodied peer.

Royals Charities is supporting this initiative in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and William Jewell College. The project was started by students from William Jewell’s prestigious Pryor Leadership Studies Program, while YMCA of Greater Kansas City donated the land and will supervise the program. The fi eld will be located near the

intersection of Highway 152 and Interstate 169, across from Metro North Mall and just off North Platte Purchase Road.

The Baseball ‘N Blues party will bring together fans and the entire 2006 team. Patrons will enjoy a signature dinner and

participate in live and silent auctions featuring unique memorabilia, sporting event tickets, and entertainment and luxury items. Companies or individuals interested in donating items or services for this fun-fi lled philanthropic event may contact Royals Charities.

Royalty Fields Area fi elds are eligible for make-overs, courtesy,

in part, to Royals Charities. The “Royalty Fields” grant distribution program was recently announced to provide new life to area baseball fi elds. Midwest non-profi t and government units who run baseball and/or softball programs may apply for project-specifi c matching grants up to $5,000.

The grants will be awarded to organizations to improve game-essential areas including new sod, infi eld, fencing and dugouts. Non-essential items

including lights, bleachers/grandstands, restrooms and scoreboards will not be considered.

traveling royalsRoyals current and former players,

including several of the club’s young stars and members of the Royals Hall of Fame, spent part of the winter meeting fans and visiting schools, military bases and shopping malls across the Midwest. The annual Royals Caravan participated in 50 events in 35 communities during the 17-day tour.

Participants in this year’s caravan included Manager Buddy Bell, pitchers Jeremy Affeldt and Andrew Sisco, catcher John Buck, fi rst baseman Mike Sweeney, third baseman Mark Teahen, outfi elders Emil Brown and Reggie Sanders, and Royals 2005 fi rst-round draft pick Alex Gordon. They were joined by Sluggerrr, Royals Alumni members, club broadcasters and front offi ce staff as part of this Royal tradition.

holiday visits in k.c.Several members of the Kansas City Royals participated in various community activities during the Holiday season. Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt, catcher John Buck, Royals Hall of Famer Frank White, former Royals players Al Fitzmorris and Greg Pryor, broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre and mascot Sluggerrr visited several areas in Kansas City. The Royals distributed baseball gloves that were collected through the Gloves for Kids event hosted by Lefebvre’s Footprints Foundation at Dick’s

Sporting Goods in 2005. Young ballplayers from the Guadalupe Center and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City received the gloves.

In addition, the group supported the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign by ringing bells and collecting donations. Finally, the group visited Blue River

Elementary in Overland Park, Kan., to read books with select primary classrooms.

personal shoppers for kids from Big Brothers/Big Sisters in a Topeka Wal-

Mart last December. The Royals partnered with the Topeka/Shawnee County Fraternal Order of Police and Wal-Mart for the 13th annual Christmas with a Cop event.

Royals mascot Sluggerrr Claus made a special holiday visit to the shoppers before departing to share the holiday fun with children undergoing treatment at

Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka. The Royals provided fi nancial support

and gifts to the event, helping the Fraternal Order of Police and Wal-Mart to continue the tradition of holiday shopping with under-privileged kids in Topeka.
