What’s New?

Rituals, Habits, & Routines

We must make  automatic  and habitual  ... as many useful actions as we can.

The more of the details of our daily life we can hand over to the effortless custody of automation, the more our higher powers of mind will be set free for their proper work.

Culture Reflects the Lessons

Learned Over Time

Morrison’s essay opens with a story of a young time & motion expert trying to find a way to speed up artillery crews during WWI, just after the fall of France. He watched one of the five- man gun crews practicing in the field with their guns mounted on trailers, towed behind their trucks. Puzzled by certain aspects of their procedures, he took some slow-motion pictures of the soldiers performing the loading, aiming, and firing routines.

When he ran these pictures over once or twice, he noticed something that appeared odd to him. A moment before the firing, two members of the gun crew ceased all activity and came to attention for a three-second interval extending throughout the discharge of the gun.

Since this seemed like quite a waste of time, and the young time & motion expert really couldn’t make any sense of it, he asked an old artillery colonel to look at the films to see if he could explain this strange behavior.

The colonel, too, was puzzled. He asked to see the pictures again. "Ah," he said when the performance was

over, "I have it. They are holding the horses."

If you don’t remember anything else about me today, just remember these three words —Change is good. Change is not a criticism of the past. It just means the future is going to be different. If that sounds exciting to you, you’re going to love me. If any of you are thinking ‘‘I’d rather do things the way we’ve always done them, ’’ I’ve got to tell you—you’re going to hate me.

Supporting the Front Line:Lessons For Leaders

Lead with a personal touch, but follow up with structure

We are all in the service business What you keep is as important as what you

change Front line support is strategic Overinvest in core values Prepare everyone to lead, especially on the

front line Pay attention to the bottom half

Swiss Re Americas Division

We had the freedom to pick the team. We picked very good people, recognized their talents, moved them around, and let the cream rise to the top. We had to tell our message of bottom-line performance to people who had stopped caring. We had to convince them that we meant it and that you can’t survive here if you don’t care.I love coming to work here because I get to work with the best. Andreas tells us where we need to go but not how to get there. If you are committed and you perform, then you have autonomy. We are much more informal now, but much more direct. We have laughter, intellect, frustration. We think that simplicity is sexy. We created a totally different management board within two to three months. My conference table has name plaques for eachof the members of the management board. It is a recognition of who is on the team and a reminder that we each need to earn the right to be at the next meeting. I don’t expect them to be sitting there converting O2 to CO2.

Strategic Alignment:Lessons For Leaders

Culture eats strategy for lunch The muddle is in the middle Simplicity is sexy Deciding who to trust Successful transformations impact

everyone Strategy formulation is the easy part;

implementation is the hard part
