It is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. Leadership in this new era is about empowering others to decide for themselves and to reach for their full potential.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

—John Maxwel

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” —Lao Tzu

Vision

Steve Jobs vision of a “Computer for the rest of us”, sparked the PC revolution and

made Apple an icon of American business. Sreedharan believed that one day he could give Delhi a world-class metro

rail. Nitish Kumar has the vision to transform Bihar and to have a faster, more

transparent and an efficient administration.

Leadership success always starts with a Vision. Compelling visions can truly change the world. The visions these leaders have can be--and, in fact, should be challenging to put into action. They realize them only by setting realistic, demanding goals and then going after them.

“We started out to get a computer in the hands of everyday people, and we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.”

“Strategy without vision is Worthless”

Jobs was totally focused on innovation, and bringing new technology in the products.

Sreedharan, Metro man of India took up the challenge of building the Konkan railways that reduced the Mumbai-Kochi distance by one-third inspite of opposition from financial analysts, environmentalists and bureaucrats .

Nitish Kumar has always been a lone warrior. His focus was always directed towards his ambition right through to make Bihar as one of the most developed state in the world and constantly worked for it right from his political career.

Focus and Commitment

Page 13: Leadership style

“The day soldiers stop bring you their problems, is the day you have stopped leading them.” - General Colin Powell

Steve Jobs relied heavily on the synergy that often takes place in face-to-face collaboration. The Apple headquarters were designed to encourage chance meetings and maximize person-to-person encounters.

Listening to Sreedharan was like a star professor. This role of advising, listening, motivating seems to fit him like wheels on a track. He is a good speaker, and his advice doesn’t come across as pontification; it’s almost like a suggestion.

As the chief minister of state, Nitish Kumar has been articulating there plans and vision for the state. His oratory and persuasive skills are well acclaimed not only within his own party and state but also across entire nation.

Communication

Resource utilization

Steve Jobs: To create products and service which reflect a passion for delivering delightful user experiences from start to finish.

Sreedharan believes that human resources, maintenance, stores, accounts and project execution is interlinked and fully computerised to avoid manual delays, heavy documentation and duplication of inter-departmental activities.

Nitish Kumar with limited resources and little financial aid he has been able to transfer a state by just ensuring that limited resources are put to optimum utilization.

Leaders need to analyze the operational or production capacity of their

organizational unit. Next, leaders must determine the causes of bottlenecks and

problems, which can include inadequate scheduling or insufficient human or

financial resources.

“ It doesn’t matter how many resources you have. If you don’t know how to use them, it will never be enough.”-Anonymous

Innovation:-

Steve Jobs: “If we don’t cannibalize ourselves, someone else will”. Installation of reverse countdown clocks that remind the employees about

the impending deadlines of their projects was a very innovative step taken by Sreedharan.

Nitish Kumar has also charmed his followers and critics with his ability to implement out of box ideas which have had significant impact on social development in Bihar.

Innovation Leadership involves adopting certain styles of leadership in organizations to influence employees to produce innovative ideas, products and solutions.

“I never perfected an invention that I did not think about in terms of the service it might give others.. I find out what the world needs, then I proceed to invent.” -Anonymous

Ethics“A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon this world.”- Albert Camus Steve Jobs was an autocratic leader he always thinks what he does is right. In the pursuit of a goal, he let no one stand in his way and would not hesitate to run down, push aside or destroy anyone who got in his way .Following the principles of Bhagwad Gita, Sreedharan has always tried to do things right. His definition of success is not just about completing a project on time, but completing it with transparent integrity .Nitish Kumar’s biggest political asset is his pristine reputation. He has always taken things head on and confronted his party members, policy makers on every public policy decision

From ethical point of view, Steve Jobs was more flexible in approach but all these leaders have a common similarity that they took end to end responsibility .

Page 17: Leadership style

Simplicity

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”-Leonardo da Vinci

Jobs’ ability to focus was accompanied by the related instinct to simplify things by zeroing in on their essence and eliminating unnecessary components .

Sreedharan’s favourite quotation is “Do you work without expecting any return out of it”,. You do it for the sake of the society of the organization you work for.

Nitish Kumar is still grounded to his roots and believes in simple living. Frugality, simple living, and altruism, loved neat clothes and the environment qualities were unconsciously instilled in Nitish and became a part of his personal and political life.

Page 18: Leadership style

Team work“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working

together is success.”- Henry Ford Jobs loved working in teams and loved meetings, He felt that, in general, teams,

especially large groups, made the best decisions and developed the best products—but only if they were leveraged correctly.

Focus and passion are Sreedharan’s traits, but for him the success mantra is teamwork. His management is a process of aligning people and getting them committed to work for a common goal to the maximise social benefit in search of excellence.

Nitish Kumar has delegated few key responsibilities to his subordinates. He also re-energized the local governments in the form of panchayats or assemblies, by giving them more responsibility for areas such as education.

Page 19: Leadership style

Motivation A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the

desire to beat others.- Ayn RandSteve jobs himself was a motivator ,which helped team members to envision success and possibilities. He inspired and attracted people with the same vision and the skill set he needed for the team. Sreedharan believes that the best way to motivate people is to set an example for them . He tried to set an example in all manners, everything whether it is punctuality or inspection or standards for specifications, finishing of the work on time . Nitish Kumar always wanted to be close to the masses and to address their problems and grievances. For eg: program “Janata Ke Darbar Mein Mukhyamantri” shows how he try to motivate people through ensuring quick readdressal of the problems and that government is for the peoples welfare

An effective leader must have a thorough knowledge of motivational factors for others. He must understand the basic needs of employees and peers. Leadership is used as a means of motivating others.
