Using all the resources of School Senior Management Teams to develop teams that achieve a positive and effective impactRoles and responsibilities in schools are becoming more diverse with increasing demands being made on Senior Leaders.

The Inspiring Leadership Conference has been devised, following consultation with Southwark SLTs, to provide a programme aimed at all Senior Leaders, with workshops and keynote speakers providing the opportunity to compare, discuss and implement new ideas as Leadership teams.

The conference is open to all Senior Leaders with workshops and speakers covering a broad range of topics from finance, governance and human resources to curriculum subjects, teaching and learning. The aim is to make the conference accessible to everyone in School Leadership Teams across the different sessions taking place during the conference. Delegates are free to select sessions according to their own requirements and specialisms.

White Working Class British and Minority Groups - Presented by Prof. Steve StrandProf. Strand will be showing that the attainment of WWC pupils is a genuine concern, and contrary to some media reports this applies to girls as well as boys. However he will also show that the achievement of Black Caribbean WC pupils, and in particular Black Caribbean boys from relatively advantaged homes, are also a cause for concern. Prof.Strand will be looking at national data for age 5, 11 and 16, as well as national longitudinal studies age 3-5 (MCS) and 11-16 (LSYPE).

Session 1 - in various breakout rooms• Mental Health (SEND) - Simon Ward

Recent changes such as the new code of practice and the ‘no health without mental health’ agenda have emphasised the importance of incorporating the promotion of mental health into the life and work of schools. In this interactive session combining theory with practical examples, Simon Ward will focus on some key concepts, ideas and research in this area. In particular, he will draw upon the evidence base of positive psychology and resilience with an emphasis on the attitudes, skills and experiences, which promote mental health and well-being.A model for “Flourishing” will be introduced which can be applied across the school community

• Schools’ Finance - Nigel Blackburn and Debbie CoslettThe role of educational financial leaders in a time of increased accountability – political awareness and strategic planning for the next generation. This session is aimed at all schools – LA maintained, Academies, Free Schools and Studio Schools.

• Under 2s and under 3s - Denise AitkinDenise Aitkin shares knowledge gained from a team of reflective practitioners working with children under three. The needs of young children are explained as they make the transition from an individual into a group context together with an explanation of the staffing and routine arrangements required to support this. Naturalistic recordings show 2-3 years olds involved in concentrated play, focussing on the factors which enable this to happen, and potential educational achievement of this age group. The practitioner’s role working with younger children is discussed, how it differs from working with older children, and the challenges faced by leaders of nursery schools integrating two year olds into their setting.

• Using action research in middle leadership to secure school improvement - Dany Thomas and Madeleine Danaher, Southwark School Advisors. This session will feature 2 different teachers who have already presented their work to course participants on our Preparation for Deputy Headship course this year.

• Managing time effectively - Mark O’Connor Delegates will explore the barriers in themselves that cause time to be lost and appreciate the importance of planning and prioritising their workload. Delegates will receive useful tips on how to deal with interruptions and a guide to self discipline.

Managing performance - Glenn Hayes, Irwin Mitchell SolicitorsThis workshop will give practical insight as to how to get the best out of people from when they first join and provide key insights on managing performance as the employment continues.He will also provide insight as to how schools can:• Identify symptoms of poor performance• Identify factors affecting performance• Deal with and effectively manage poor performance• Follow a fair process• Ascertain employees’ future aspirations and plans, including plans to retire• Mitigate the risks of unfair dismissal and age discrimination claims• Performance manage with confidence. Training is aimed at delegates with direct supervisory responsibilities, and who are often faced with the practical implications of employment law on a day-to-day basis.

Lunch and NetworkingLunch will be a working lunch – buffet style for delegates as people may return to school during this time. Visit the Marketplace

Session 2 - in various breakout rooms• Schools’ Finance - Nigel Blackburn and Debbie Coslett

Keeping your head above water in a time of fiscal decline – how not just to survive but improve through effective resource leadership. This session is aimed at all schools – LA maintained, Academies, Free Schools and Studio Schools.

• Mental Health (SEND) from the child’s perspective - Dr. John Ivens, Southwark HeadteacherJohn Ivens approaches the subject of mental health from the child`s perspective – how schools can address the learning needs of pupils who have identified mental health needs. These are essentially the same children who are defined as having behaviour problems and my aim is to encourage schools to realise they have all the skills that are needed already, even though the labels have changed. The new draft code of practice listed some mental health diagnoses which I think will make many schools feel disempowered; unable to address the needs of children with unfamiliar diagnostic labels. Over the years I have found that focussing on these children`s learning, irrespective of the diagnoses, is not only beneficial for the child`s education but also therapeutic. If we can work with the mental health professionals by focussing on what children can do (rather than what they cannot) we are the ones who have a huge impact on making children feel good about themselves. It is emphasised that teachers are the professionals with the widest experience of a range of children, including those with mental health needs. As such, teachers already have often unrecognised skills in managing the needs of pupils with mental health difficulties.

• Distributed Leadership - Michele RobbinsThis session is an opportunity for leadership teams to explore the implications of Ofsted’s heightened emphasis on governance. Practical strategies will be shared that enable governing bodies to impact positively on the leadership and management of the school, and to have evidence to prove it.

• Prejudice and equalities in schools - Peter Nathan Focus is on understanding what is meant by prejudice, looking at the law and also Ofsted expectations, dealing with situations that may arise in school.

• Introducing the London South East Maths Hub - Karen NormanSupport for maths education is changing. Thirty-two new Maths Hubs are being established across England led by outstanding schools with a record of excellence in mathematics, but also in partnership with neighbouring schools, colleges and universities, maths experts and employers. This new initiative builds on the excellent practice and achievement that exists across the school and colleges.We introduce your Hub to let you understand more about how you can be involved.

Leading Effective Teams - Chris GreenlandTeam leaders are increasingly being held to account to ensure that the work of their team is productive, effective and is making a positive impact on children’s learning. Leaders of teams often refer to their challenge as ‘herding cats’. We will consider how to encourage our teams to work productively together in order to fulfil our vision.

From September 2014, Ofsted have increased the importance given to EYFS during inspections. Find out what this means in practice, what Ofsted are looking for and how you can demonstrate the progress made in your EYFSThis session will provide up to date information and an opportunity to self evaluate your current situation re: EYFS.

• Mindfulness to Strengthen Outstanding Practice - Sue BoltonDecades of research confirm that mindfulness reduces stress and boosts well-being. As a result pupil and staff performance improve. In the corporate world mindfulness has been adopted by many companies such as Google, Goldman- Sachs , TfL. The workshop offers you a chance to experience mindfulness and learn practices you can use in school tomorrow.

• Implications of Appraisal and Pay: Reviewing and Revising your Staffing Structure - Ian DraperFor several years STPCD has been heading in the direction of greater autonomy for schools with regard to remuneration for teachers and leaders all linked to an effective appraisal system. These changes could have significant impact on staffing structures.The session will consider a range of staffing models including:• The replacement of TLR allowances with more flexible career progression

pathways• The expansion of the leadership to to take account of the removal of set

differentials• The creation of a four-stage career structure for teachers based on performance

and increased responsibility and leadership• The possible devolvement of subject responsibility from staff leadership

responsibility • Further changes to the Ofsted framework - Peter Nathan and Jim Eshelby,

Southwark LAThere are many additional changes to the Ofsted framework that will be explained in this session. Both senior and middle leaders should attend.

• Managing asbestos in compliance with law - Lee Tapping, Southwark LAThe legal duty to manage asbestos is delegated to maintained schools through the scheme for financing schools. This important update will provide school leaders with an understanding of the duty to manage asbestos and the practical steps they need to take to implement a robust management plan and ensure full compliance with the law.

Southwark Headteachers Executive AGMEvery school in Southwark is part of Headteachers Council from which members of the Headteachers Executive are elected by phase and Locality. It is through this network that information and support is given to schools in a collegiate way and the AGM provides an overview of what has taken place over the past year. Headteachers only, from all schools, are invited and encouraged to attend.

Leadership and Performance Management - Simon Atkinson, Assistant Cheif Executive, Ipsos MORISimon Atkinson is Assistant Chief Executive at Ipsos MORI. He has responsibility for the company’s human resources, marketing & communications and quality & compliance teams. He has more than 20 years’ experience of research, working with clients across the public and private sectors. Simon has particular expertise in local government, political polling, customer engagement and employee research. His roles within the company have included Partner at MORI, Head of Political Research, Acting Human Resources Director, Managing Director of the Ipsos MORI Social Research Institute and Managing Director of Ipsos MORI Loyalty.Simon sits on the Management Committee of the British Polling Council, and has been a co-editor of the Political Communications General Election book series since 2001. Simon is a judge for the Management Consultancies Association Annual Awards and a blogger for the Huffington Post. Simon has a close connection with the Borough, having worked in London SE1 since 1990 and conducted many surveys for Southwark over the years. He is now a Governor at the City of London Academy in Bermondsey.

How to Be Brilliant! - Paul Crittenden – Schools Advisory Service‘No-one ever performed brilliantly without feeling brilliant’ – this is the hypothesis underpinning this inspiring and uplifting speech, in which the listener is taken on a journey showing how they create their best results, and their worst! The multimedia AV show demonstrates how our lives are made up of tiny consecutive moments when we have an opportunity to be at our best – or not, and how each moment is impacted by our memories of the past and our imaginings of the future. It shows how becoming more aware of ourselves in the present, gives us more influence over those moments, and therefore our results.
