Summary of Position The Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) reports directly to the President Dr Jane Conoley is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and participates in all aspects of institution-wide planning in support of the mission and goals of the University The VPSA must possess executive level leadership skills and vision and must have committment to inclusive excellence and diversity Further this position administers a comprehensive range of services policies and procedures related to student success programming and planning implements and assesses student services strategies and allocates resources and administers a variety of comprehensive student programs and services related to student growth and development

The VPSA oversees an annual division operating budget of $38 million and provides leadership and direction to a large division of 325 staff members in a variety of departments centers and programs including the Dean of Students Career Development Center Bob Murphy Access Center Student Conduct and Ethical Development Housing and Residential Life Student Life and Development Student Health Services Testing Assessment amp Evaluation Student Orientation Advising and Registration Counseling and Psychological Services University Outreach and School Relations Educational Opportunity Program and Guardian Scholars Multicultural Affairs Office of Veterans Affairs Services Basic Needs Program and Student

Conflict of Interest The duties of this position will include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent Therefore the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700 Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis (which is a public document) complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment and take this training every other year thereafter

Fingerprinting Because of the nature of this position the University requires that the successful candidate complete a felony convictions record check prior to assuming this position

General Information The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment All management employees shall be required to provide a written statement to the appropriate administrator an any and all outside employment Employees shall also provide a written statement of outside employment if a written request by an administrator is made

Goals and Objectives - Measures of Success Within the first 12-18 months the VP for Student Services will be expected to meet the following goals and objectives

bull Be fully integrated into CSULB as a trusted leader subject matter expert with established credibility through a record of strong accomplishments build solid relationships with the President and the Executive Leadership Team

bull Build strong collaborative relationships with faculty staff students and service providers and be perceived as a solid team player who has credibility and integrity and who contributes broadly

bull Distinguish CSULB as a leader in student services with a special focus on creating a comprehensive wellness (physical and behavioral health) approach for the campus community

bull Work to create environments across the campus and especially in Greek Life that are models of inclusion respect and safety

History In 1949 California Governor Earl Warren signed the enabling act authorizing the building of a new college as a result of a 1947 survey conducted by the State Board of Education and Regents of the University of California The College was established to serve the rapidly expanding population of Orange and Southern Los Angeles counties Since then CSULB has grown to become one of the states largest universities

The institution was first named as Los Angeles-Orange County State College Dr Peter Victor Peterson was its first president It offered 29 courses taught by 13 faculty members in a converted apartment building in Long Beach In June 1950 the citizens of Long Beach voted overwhelmingly to purchase 320 acres as a permanent campus for the college The name of the college was renamed to Long Beach State College upon donation of the new site by the people of Long Beach

Carl W McIntosh was named the colleges second president in Fall 1959 While McIntosh was president the enrollment surged In just seven years of being named president the number of students doubled to 21000 and he rapidly expanded and revamped the curriculum McIntosh tripled the number of faculty and constructed 30 new buildings In 1964 LBSC changed its name to California State College at Long Beach In 1967 the California state legislature revamped the state college system It changed its name in 1968 to California State College Long Beach as part of these changes and began to be much more closely integrated into the California State College system

In 1965 CSCLB hosted the first International Sculpture Symposium to be held in the United States and the first such symposium to be held at a college or university Six sculptors from abroad and two from the United States created many of the monumental sculptures present on the campus today The event received national media attention from newspapers around the country including the New York Times Los Angeles Times Magazine Art in America and a six-page color spread in Fortune Magazine

When McIntosh departed in 1969 he was succeeded by President Steve Horn The school acquired university status in 1972 along with 12 other state college campuses The promotion

was decided by the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) system according to total enrollment size of graduate programs complexity and diversity of majors and number of doctorates held by faculty at each college CSCLB thus became California State University Long Beach (CSULB)

Also in 1972 the campus became the home of the largest library facility in the then 19-campus CSU system a modern six-story building with a seating capacity of nearly 4000 students

Campus Located three miles from the Pacific coast CSULB is an idyllic university destination where talented and diverse students come to experience a campus environment that is student- centered service-oriented and globally-engaged

The University Student Union (USU) building is located at the center of campus The three-story glass building occupies roughly 180000 square feet housing numerous offices and offering more casual attractions including a study lounge a ballroom a food court a bowling alley an arcade and a movie theater

The Recreation and Wellness Center is an extensive all-purpose athletic center covering about 125000 square feet It was completed in 2010 It includes facilities for fitness programs and aerobics classes courts for volleyball basketball badminton rock climbing walls an indoor track a student lounge and much more The Center is funded and managed by CSULBs Associated Students Incorporated

The basketball and volleyball games are currently played in the iconic eighteen-story Walter Pyramid located on north campus The Pyramid is a state-of-the-art sporting complex that can accommodate over 5000 fans including temporary seating and standing room Two sections of interior stands are fitted with large hydraulic lifts which can lift the seating elements forty-five degrees into the air creating room for five volleyball courts or three basketball courts The Pyramid is home to the Southern California Summer Pro League a noted showcase for current and prospective NBA basketball players

The Universityrsquos Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum ranks in the top 10 of the nations over 6000 museums Its permanent collection contains primarily abstract expressionist paintings and works on paper The Kleefeld Comtemporary was the first accredited museum in the CSU system In addition the museums Gordon F Hampton collection is currently housed at the Downtown Los Angeles law offices of Sheppard Mullin

The campus is also home to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center a 1074-seat theater named after CSULB alumni Richard and Karen Carpenter

Athletics The University sponsors 19 intercollegiate athletic teams All teams compete at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and participate within the Big West Conference Golden Coast Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

Athletics has had success at the highest levels Menrsquos Volleyball has won back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2018 and 2019 part of three overall for the program Womenrsquos Volleyball has also won three NCAA Championships while the Beach Volleyball program won the AVCA National Championship in 2013 Menrsquos Basketball Womenrsquos Basketball Softball Baseball and Womenrsquos Soccer join the volleyball programs in all having advanced at least to the National Quarterfinals in their respective sports

History In 1949 California Governor Earl Warren signed the enabling act authorizing the building of a new college as a result of a 1947 survey conducted by the State Board of Education and Regents of the University of California The College was established to serve the rapidly expanding population of Orange and Southern Los Angeles counties Since then CSULB has grown to become one of the states largest universities

The institution was first named as Los Angeles-Orange County State College Dr Peter Victor Peterson was its first president It offered 29 courses taught by 13 faculty members in a converted apartment building in Long Beach In June 1950 the citizens of Long Beach voted overwhelmingly to purchase 320 acres as a permanent campus for the college The name of the college was renamed to Long Beach State College upon donation of the new site by the people of Long Beach

Carl W McIntosh was named the colleges second president in Fall 1959 While McIntosh was president the enrollment surged In just seven years of being named president the number of students doubled to 21000 and he rapidly expanded and revamped the curriculum McIntosh tripled the number of faculty and constructed 30 new buildings In 1964 LBSC changed its name to California State College at Long Beach In 1967 the California state legislature revamped the state college system It changed its name in 1968 to California State College Long Beach as part of these changes and began to be much more closely integrated into the California State College system

In 1965 CSCLB hosted the first International Sculpture Symposium to be held in the United States and the first such symposium to be held at a college or university Six sculptors from abroad and two from the United States created many of the monumental sculptures present on the campus today The event received national media attention from newspapers around the country including the New York Times Los Angeles Times Magazine Art in America and a six-page color spread in Fortune Magazine

When McIntosh departed in 1969 he was succeeded by President Steve Horn The school acquired university status in 1972 along with 12 other state college campuses The promotion

was decided by the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) system according to total enrollment size of graduate programs complexity and diversity of majors and number of doctorates held by faculty at each college CSCLB thus became California State University Long Beach (CSULB)

Also in 1972 the campus became the home of the largest library facility in the then 19-campus CSU system a modern six-story building with a seating capacity of nearly 4000 students

History In 1949 California Governor Earl Warren signed the enabling act authorizing the building of a new college as a result of a 1947 survey conducted by the State Board of Education and Regents of the University of California The College was established to serve the rapidly expanding population of Orange and Southern Los Angeles counties Since then CSULB has grown to become one of the states largest universities

The institution was first named as Los Angeles-Orange County State College Dr Peter Victor Peterson was its first president It offered 29 courses taught by 13 faculty members in a converted apartment building in Long Beach In June 1950 the citizens of Long Beach voted overwhelmingly to purchase 320 acres as a permanent campus for the college The name of the college was renamed to Long Beach State College upon donation of the new site by the people of Long Beach

Carl W McIntosh was named the colleges second president in Fall 1959 While McIntosh was president the enrollment surged In just seven years of being named president the number of students doubled to 21000 and he rapidly expanded and revamped the curriculum McIntosh tripled the number of faculty and constructed 30 new buildings In 1964 LBSC changed its name to California State College at Long Beach In 1967 the California state legislature revamped the state college system It changed its name in 1968 to California State College Long Beach as part of these changes and began to be much more closely integrated into the California State College system

In 1965 CSCLB hosted the first International Sculpture Symposium to be held in the United States and the first such symposium to be held at a college or university Six sculptors from abroad and two from the United States created many of the monumental sculptures present on the campus today The event received national media attention from newspapers around the country including the New York Times Los Angeles Times Magazine Art in America and a six-page color spread in Fortune Magazine

When McIntosh departed in 1969 he was succeeded by President Steve Horn The school acquired university status in 1972 along with 12 other state college campuses The promotion

was decided by the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) system according to total enrollment size of graduate programs complexity and diversity of majors and number of doctorates held by faculty at each college CSCLB thus became California State University Long Beach (CSULB)

Also in 1972 the campus became the home of the largest library facility in the then 19-campus CSU system a modern six-story building with a seating capacity of nearly 4000 students

Campus Located three miles from the Pacific coast CSULB is an idyllic university destination where talented and diverse students come to experience a campus environment that is student- centered service-oriented and globally-engaged

The University Student Union (USU) building is located at the center of campus The three-story glass building occupies roughly 180000 square feet housing numerous offices and offering more casual attractions including a study lounge a ballroom a food court a bowling alley an arcade and a movie theater

The Recreation and Wellness Center is an extensive all-purpose athletic center covering about 125000 square feet It was completed in 2010 It includes facilities for fitness programs and aerobics classes courts for volleyball basketball badminton rock climbing walls an indoor track a student lounge and much more The Center is funded and managed by CSULBs Associated Students Incorporated

The basketball and volleyball games are currently played in the iconic eighteen-story Walter Pyramid located on north campus The Pyramid is a state-of-the-art sporting complex that can accommodate over 5000 fans including temporary seating and standing room Two sections of interior stands are fitted with large hydraulic lifts which can lift the seating elements forty-five degrees into the air creating room for five volleyball courts or three basketball courts The Pyramid is home to the Southern California Summer Pro League a noted showcase for current and prospective NBA basketball players

History In 1949 California Governor Earl Warren signed the enabling act authorizing the building of a new college as a result of a 1947 survey conducted by the State Board of Education and Regents of the University of California The College was established to serve the rapidly expanding population of Orange and Southern Los Angeles counties Since then CSULB has grown to become one of the states largest universities

The institution was first named as Los Angeles-Orange County State College Dr Peter Victor Peterson was its first president It offered 29 courses taught by 13 faculty members in a converted apartment building in Long Beach In June 1950 the citizens of Long Beach voted overwhelmingly to purchase 320 acres as a permanent campus for the college The name of the college was renamed to Long Beach State College upon donation of the new site by the people of Long Beach

Carl W McIntosh was named the colleges second president in Fall 1959 While McIntosh was president the enrollment surged In just seven years of being named president the number of students doubled to 21000 and he rapidly expanded and revamped the curriculum McIntosh tripled the number of faculty and constructed 30 new buildings In 1964 LBSC changed its name to California State College at Long Beach In 1967 the California state legislature revamped the state college system It changed its name in 1968 to California State College Long Beach as part of these changes and began to be much more closely integrated into the California State College system

California State University Long Beach An Overview

Ranked nationally by Money Magazine as the 13th best college for your money and the 10th best public university among 727 other national universities California State University Long Beach (CSULB) enrolls 31455 students in 82 undergraduate degree programs and 5400 students in 69 Masterrsquos and doctoral programs (total 36856 headcounts32150 FTE students)

History In 1949 California Governor Earl Warren signed the enabling act authorizing the building of a new college as a result of a 1947 survey conducted by the State Board of Education and Regents of the University of California The College was established to serve the rapidly expanding population of Orange and Southern Los Angeles counties Since then CSULB has grown to become one of the states largest universities

The institution was first named as Los Angeles-Orange County State College Dr Peter Victor Peterson was its first president It offered 29 courses taught by 13 faculty members in a converted apartment building in Long Beach In June 1950 the citizens of Long Beach voted overwhelmingly to purchase 320 acres as a permanent campus for the college The name of the college was renamed to Long Beach State College upon donation of the new site by the people of Long Beach

Carl W McIntosh was named the colleges second president in Fall 1959 While McIntosh was president the enrollment surged In just seven years of being named president the number of students doubled to 21000 and he rapidly expanded and revamped the curriculum McIntosh tripled the number of faculty and constructed 30 new buildings In 1964 LBSC changed its name to California State College at Long Beach In 1967 the California state legislature revamped the state college system It changed its name in 1968 to California State College Long Beach as part of these changes and began to be much more closely integrated into the California State College system

In 1965 CSCLB hosted the first International Sculpture Symposium to be held in the United States and the first such symposium to be held at a college or university Six sculptors from abroad and two from the United States created many of the monumental sculptures present on the campus today The event received national media attention from newspapers around the country including the New York Times Los Angeles Times Magazine Art in America and a six-page color spread in Fortune Magazine

When McIntosh departed in 1969 he was succeeded by President Steve Horn The school acquired university status in 1972 along with 12 other state college campuses The promotion

was decided by the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) system according to total enrollment size of graduate programs complexity and diversity of majors and number of doctorates held by faculty at each college CSCLB thus became California State University Long Beach (CSULB)
