To the Florida Hospital Family,

The first known lighthouse was built in 285 BC on an island in Egypt. In the years since, it is estimated that as many as 50,000 lighthouses have been built and currently exist in the world, functioning at one point or another to guide ships and their sailors safely into port. As we all know, the purpose of a lighthouse is to illuminate: it helps ships identify their location, warns them of potential hazards, and reveals that land is near.

If we think about the role of leaders, our purpose is not much different than that of a lighthouse. We set goals and guide our teams to live out their values, achieve a shared vision, and fulfill our teams’ missions. We use critical thinking and problem solving skills to identify risks and navigate our teams around them. We also support them with guidance and motivation… celebrating wins along the way and providing them safe harbor during difficult times.

At Florida Hospital, we believe that every employee serves as a leader. And as such, we must continue to develop and refine our skills, much like the lighthouse keepers of old had to keep the gas beacon lit and the reflecting mirrors clean. There are many ways to grow our leadership skills… reading books and articles, finding a mentor, gaining experience in a new area, self-reflection and formal leadership programs to name just a few.

We are committed to your personal and professional development and are excited to offer you the variety of leadership programs and courses you see in this catalog. Florida Hospital invests time and resources in every team member because leadership development is one of our greatest priorities as we continue to bring glory to God through our work in healthcare. Just as the lighthouse brings hope, truth, and light, so do we as we work together to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

We know you will enjoy the time you spend in these programs, and we thank you for your commitment to lifelong learning and your passion to fulfill the mission of Florida Hospital.

and utilizes single-sign-on for ease of access.

A social learning system, ALN allows all of AHS to leverage best practices ineducation (clinical and non-clinical, required and elective) from across the

organization by creating transparency in content sharing and expertise, and ultimately, creating greater opportunities for collaboration.

For leaders, ALN means greater visibility into their team’s trainingcompletions and accountabilities, as well as improved reporting

Mission-centered leadership is essential for our organization. Every leader is a spiritual leader, setting the pace for mission and modeling our mission in action. Leaders are stewards of the legacy of Adventist health care that is core to our identity, and are accountable to our institution and its denominational sponsor for the nurturing of our mission culture.

• Leaders conceptualize the mission purpose, or “the why,” for every strategic plan and operation.Christ’s healing ministry was often accompanied by the words to His disciples, “Do you understand what I just did?” Leaders will be able to convey ideas, strategic plans, and operational expectations through mission-based concepts that help their employees understand the sacred nature of the work they do in every aspect of the organization.

• Leaders communicate their expectations and plans through the framework of our mission. The question “What is the mission outcome I am trying to achieve with this plan?” is an example of how mission gets planned, deployed, executed, and integrated throughout our organization. Clear communication and follow up processes help employees experience a sense of direction that fosters trust.

• CREATION Health principles guide leaders’ approach with their teams, thereby creating a culture of wholeness driven by mission.Mission-centered leaders understand that the people they serve are created by God—mind, body, and spirit. Based on this mission perspective, leaders nurture the growth and development of their teams through the principles of CREATION Health.

• Leaders align mission objectives and strategic agendas with campus/business unit priorities.Mission-centered leaders create strategic plans with the ultimate purpose of enhancing the sacred trust of delivering health and healing for our patients and community. Everything we do is connected to this core mission objective. Such alignment is based on an understanding of our sacred work and should be executed with integrity and passion.

• Leaders deploy and sustain a systematic and integrated focus on mission performance.Leaders understand that operational processes and metrics are a direct reflection of how we are delivering our mission. Performance metrics are the ultimate reflection of how mission is being integrated in care and experienced by the patient.

• Leadership roles are driven by mission principles and concepts.Mission-centered leaders demonstrate commitment to their teams by taking a sincere interest in who they are. This is characterized by actively listening and taking action to meet their needs, modeling a love for learning, and adapting to the constant changes that come in health care. This mission focus helps create trust and a culture of belonging and hope.

• Leaders view patient experience, employee engagement, stewardship of resources, and community health as the key performance indicators for mission. The patient’s experience is the ultimate expression of our mission and a key indicator of how mission is delivered and experienced. Mission leaders see performance metrics as indicators of how patients trust the care we provide, how they experience the quality, and to what degree they feel a sense of hope as they leave our care.

• Leaders view ongoing cycles of improvement as a path to mission excellence.Mission-centered leaders are passionate about excellence and continuous improvement of processes and operations. They encourage a climate of innovation and responsible risk-taking to find solutions and improved outcomes.

Succession Management 101Research shows that the demand for talent is rising while the supply of leaders in the healthcare environment is diminishing. Succession management is a leadership imperative, yet many managers lack the tools and resources to do this effectively. This engaging session is intended to equip Florida Hospital leaders in developing direct reports for potential succession.

The Leadership ChallengeThe root of the word lead is “to go, guide, or travel.” As a leader, you have to focus not just on what’s right in front of you, but on the future as well. Leading is about taking others to a new destination; maybe one they didn’t even envision. The Leadership Challenge is based on more than 30 years of research on leadership practices that have been shown to help leaders be successful across industries. Through experiential learning activities, use of a 360° feedback tool, and deliberate practice, participants will learn The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart.
