Leadership Development Opportunities
for Talented & Aspiring Leaders
in Primary Care
Spring 2019
Introduction
Some of the most wide-ranging changes are occurring in primary care. Primary care
includes the largest number of providers and accounts for the largest proportion of patient
contacts with the NHS. To meet the needs of a changing population, adopt vital innovations,
redesign for greater sustainability and support increasing personalised and integrated care,
primary care teams will need to evolve the way they work. In addition, there is growing
evidence that building communities - growing local ‘social capital’ - in partnership with local
authorities and the voluntary and community sector is essential to achieving better
population health outcomes, improved self-management of long-term conditions and in
reducing demand. These are leadership challenges of unprecedented scale and complexity
which require that primary care professionals are inspired, equipped and supported in
leadership roles. Therefore we have developed a menu of leadership development ‘offers’.
The most up-to-date offers can be found on our website www.nwacademy.nhs.uk. Please
type primary care into the search facility. Or simply follow the links found further in this
brochure on offers you are interested in.
We are also keen to connect with our primary care colleagues. Every quarter we release a
bulletin detailing the latest offers. If you want to be added to our circulation list please
complete your details here.

Leadership Development Modules
Available throughout 2019/2020 to talented and aspiring leaders in Primary Care
Building Resilience: Supporting
Leaders Across Systems and
Localities
Full day
The public sector reform agenda is meaning enormous change, disruption and transition
across hundreds of organisations and affecting many thousands of people across the
country. At this time it’s important to stay focused, deliver results and stay resilient (for
yourself and your team). What do we really mean by resilience though? Is it something that
anyone can develop? And how does resilience affect performance, wellbeing and
happiness?
Personal resilience is arguably the most important resource for coping well during
challenging times. During the session we will explore skills that will increase your confidence
in your ability to bounce back from the many pressures you encounter in today’s workplace
and daily lives. In addition you will focus on reviewing the leadership required to build
effective performance and wellbeing within your teams.
We will:
Explore the links between psychological and physical wellbeing, productivity and
engagement
Understand models of resilience building
Explore the concept of engaging leadership and undertake a personal leadership
audit
Develop leadership behaviours to build engaged resilient followership

Effective Chairing Skills
Full day
As a Chair do you sometimes feel you haven’t got the
actions or decisions needed when chairing or attending
meetings?
Chairing successful meetings is a vital skill in the NHS business environment. Successful
meetings provide an essential forum for planning, debate, information, briefings, decision-
making, engagement and involvement of staff.
Too many meetings are poorly prepared and managed, leading to the loss of valuable time
and failure in satisfying their objectives. This interactive module is designed to give those
who chair meetings guidelines on best practice in preparation, planning and structure of
meetings to ensure successful outcomes. It is also designed to enable participants to learn
and practice the effective skills/ facilitation of chairing and participating in more productive
meetings.
You will be encouraged to participate in a range of exercises, such as role play, facilitation of
groups. You will receive professional support in developing an action plan in relation to your
role as the chair of meetings.
Specific workshop objectives;
• To discuss best practice in chairing meetings and how you can use these tips to improve how you are currently managing meetings;
o How you can use your interpersonal skills to keep control of the meeting and disarm disruptive participants.
o Ensure that each agenda item is introduced and dealt with effectively. o Structure discussions to build group consensus and gain a clear decision on
each specific agenda item. o Identify what can go wrong in meetings and know what action to take to
ensure participants keep focused on the task. o Encourage appropriate participation and eliminate time wasting.
• Using a range of scenarios, discuss the dynamics and behaviours of members at meetings and through role play look at how the chair can manage these.

Handling Challenging Conversations
Full day
This module involves applying sound psychological theory and practices to make a real
difference in personal performance in challenging communications. During the day you will
explore how clarifying feelings of threat enables us to see things more clearly and solve
problems more effectively. You will apply evidence-based models and theories to address
thinking errors and distortions which may hamper our success in building resilience and in
dealing with challenging communications.
There will be opportunities for you to work interactively with actors, in pairs and in groups.
You will also be encouraged to reflect individually on a range of exercises, such as case
studies and role plays. You will receive professional support in developing an action plan in
relation to specific upcoming, challenging conversation or issues you are facing.

Increasing Resilience in Leadership
Full day
(Previously: Increasing Confidence for Leadership and Resilience)
‘Increasing Resilience in Leadership’ is a one day module which is designed to support
development of resilience, purpose and confidence. Whilst building on personal strengths,
the workshop also enables you to identify and address the internal barriers which may be
holding you back from achieving success when acting at (or preparing to act at) a governing
body/ board level. This new workshop will prepare you for stepping up and feeling confident
when you are considering, and then applying for, a more senior role.
We know through discussions with aspiring leaders (and also through assessment and
development centre feedback) that there are a number of talented individuals within the
system who seem to be limiting their own potential because of issues around individual
confidence and belief in their own abilities. This appears to be exacerbated by the current
context of the continually evolving health and social care setting within which the participants
are working, and by the need to develop awareness and understanding of the hugely
changeable and evolving “whole system” picture.
Based on evidence-based psychological approaches (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Coaching)
throughout the day you will tap into your greatest motivators and use these to reduce any
unhelpful limiting beliefs. You will learn a proven and effective process for shifting thinking
patterns to enable a positive, resilient mind-set for future success. The workshop will include
interactive, innovative and reflective exercises. It will draw on a wide range of learning
approaches to enable an interesting, enjoyable and personally impactful day. Our aim is that
you will leave the workshop with a positive mind-set for your own success, as well as new
practical techniques to continue to enhance your self-belief, confidence and personal impact
as you navigate the labyrinth of ambiguity and unchartered territory in the evolving health
and social care landscape.

Innovative and Creative Thinking
Full day
This will be an extremely interactive module where you will have the time and space to work
on practical exercises aimed at increasing innovative and creative thinking in the evolving
health and social care landscape.
You will also create innovative solutions to real-life, current challenges and problems leading
to development of personal action plans. These will enable you to build on your own
strengths and find strategies for addressing areas which come less naturally to you. You will
be able to directly apply your learning from the module when you return to your day-jobs.
The module will involve: some pre-work (e.g. discussions with key stakeholders,
identification of challenges in your current situation, and reading); an interactive and
energising day of workshops; and post-work (e.g. applying techniques to real organisational
projects).

Leading with Compassion and Moral Purpose
Full day
At the heart of leadership is the focus on the service-user. Historically, there has been a
‘pace setting’ leadership style prevalent within the NHS, that focused on targets and delivery
rather than engaging both staff and patients. There is now a recognised need for leaders
who will work with compassion and a strong sense of moral purpose. This module will
provide insight into what it means to lead with compassion in the NHS. It will look at how
current policies inform the healthcare landscape, focusing on the need for a passionate
commitment to do the ‘right things at the right time for service users.’
The context for this module will be set by an expert guest speaker who will outline what
leading with compassion actually means in meeting the challenges of the current and future
climate. A range of highly relevant case studies will be used, showing service users’
experiences and ethical dilemmas. These will provide a basis for facilitated group
discussions on what is the ‘right’ thing and (importantly), how and when to do it to get
successful and safe outcomes. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your values, your
authenticity and how you demonstrate compassion in your leadership role - along with how
you transmit this through to your colleagues.
To get the maximum relevance and investment on your time, in addition to the one-day
workshop, there will be some pre-work, (e.g. reading and reflection) and some post-work
(e.g. applying learning directly back into your current challenges with peer support and a
reflective journal).
