4-H Alumni: Brittany Rombach

In life, the same idea goes for your career

Brittany Rombach

The product that was put on air and displayed, was something that I was proud of.

By Brittany Rombach 2007 New Mexico State 4-H Ambassador

As I’m writing this, I’m wrestling with the idea of turning 25. Where does the time go? This means it has been almost ten years since my very first 4-H meeting and the start of what became a solid foundation.

I joined 4-H in 2005 as a way to keep me busy while my knee healed from a surgery. After a year of being a member, I became Club President, then Santa Fe County President followed by New Mexico State 4-H Ambassador.

The list of ways in which my time serving in the various leadership roles prepared me for my career as a News Producer are endless.

First, it taught me how to approach competition. I had substantially less experience in 4-H than the other candidates for each leadership position, but I still applied. In life, it’s important

to keep that same fearless mindset and to never pass up an opportunity just because you don’t think you’re qualified.

Someone else might think you are! Secondly, acknowledge the amount

of time needed to perfect your “project” before a competition. In life, the same idea goes for your career. I go into the studio at 11:30pm every night to start planning and writing my show, which airs at 5:00am. That time spent working and perfecting your “project” will be noticed.

Before moving to Florida, I had the great pleasure of working for a station in Albuquerque, where at 23, I become Sr. Producer, helping to launch a show. The time and work put into the planning and production for that show was exhausting to say the least. But the team did it for the end result. The product that was put on air and displayed, was something that I was proud of.

We are glad to send you this educational material. Our purpose is to provide educational services to the people of New Mexico. These services are financed jointly by the county, state, and federal governments and are offered on a nondiscriminatory

How can we help you plant new seeds of inspiration?By Amanda Harrington President NM 4-H Leaders’ Association

Wow, it’s that time of year again. We are all busy with school, sports, family and life, in general. Kids are working on 4-H projects and starting to get show animals. As 4-H leaders, we are trying to figure out new ways to help our members grow and learn new things. We make an effort to find new ways to keep their minds sprouting with new ideas and plowing new rows for success. Someone once told me that 4-H members grow-up to become wonderful, capable adults. This is partially due to all those volunteer 4-H adult leaders who help and support all the 4-H kids.

Whether you are an adult 4-H leader, an assistant leader, a parent or anyone associated with the New Mexico 4-H Youth Development Program, how can we help you plant new seeds of inspiration in the youth, and continue to help them sprout? Join us for the 2015 New Mexico 4-H Adult Forum as we help you “Grow with the Green.” Let us help you plant the seeds for success in your 4-H members.

We will offer some awesome workshops, an incredible speaker, and connect with 4-H leaders from all over the state. Whether you are a leader, a parent, or anyone associated with the New Mexico 4-H Youth Development Program, in large or small ways, we have something for everyone.

We invite y’all to join us on November 14, 2015, in Albuquerque as we “Grow with the Green.” If you are interested in being a workshop presenter at this year’s 4-H Adult Forum, go to http://nm4h.nmsu.edu and click on the ‘Adult

-

Volunteer Leaders’ tab, for workshop proposal forms which are due June 15th. Registration information for the November 14th event will be posted on the website as it becomes available.

We can’t wait to see you there – come “Grow with the Green.”

16th Annual New Mexico State 4-H Dog SchoolJune 12-14, 2015, in Albuquerque, NM

By Linda Herrera Valencia County 4-H Leader

The New Mexico State 4-H Dog School is designed to help 4-H youth and leaders become familiar with the 4-H Dog Project, the different events youth may participate in with their dogs, and to promote “Responsible Dog Ownership”. The first two days of 4-H Dog School offers workshops to help the member develop a greater understanding of their dog and themselves as a team. There will be different levels of training offered; beginning training for the first timers, intermediate training for those who have worked with their dogs 2 to 3 years, and advanced training for those that want to fine tune their skills and their dogs skills. Participants may participate with their dog or watch and learn, at any given time. We invite 4-H Dog project leaders and 4-H County Agents to come, watch and learn.

On Friday night, we encourage each youth participant to give a 1 to 3 minute demonstration or presentation on a dog related subject. They may also bring their 4-H Dog Project sheet or their 4-H Dog Record Book to be judged.

Each year people conduct demonstrations with their dogs from different professions or events. Some that we have had in the past are: Frisbee Dogs, Dancing Dogs, Kirtland K-9 Attack Dogs, Earth Dogs and Herding Dogs.

Sunday is the 4-H Dog Show and each youth participant is encouraged to show their dog in the class or classes of their choice. This experience will prepare them for other opportu-nities to show their dog in County 4-H Dog Shows, State Fair 4-H Dog Shows and perhaps American Kennel Shows.

The 2015 New Mexico State 4-H Dog School will be held on June 12, 13 and 14, 2015, in Albuquerque, NM, at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Posse grounds. It is a covered arena and has camping spaces available for $25 per night (electricity and water). Pet friendly hotels may be found in the area at www.petswelcome.com. The committee provides lunch, snacks and water all three days. Registration will be done through your County Extension Office. Registration deadline is Friday, May 1, 2015.

Information will be on the State 4-H website at http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/state-national-events.html. Contact Linda Herrera at [email protected] or 505-264-5412 or Sherry Galemore at 505-459-7492.

4-H’ers with advanced skills in horsemanship are eligible to nominate a two-year-old horse for the Western Pleasure Futurity and Showmanship Classic held each year during the State Fair 4-H Horse Show. and counsel on training techniques may come from outside sources, however, the 4-H member must do all the riding and work on the Versatility Horse.

The Versatility Class is held during the State Fair 4-H Horse Show. Nominations for the Versatility Class are due to the State 4-H Office by May 1 of the current year. Nomination forms and complete rules are available on the 4-H website under “Horse and Livestock Events.” There is a $20.00 nomination fee.

Extended Deadline:Horse CertificatesHorse Certificates need to be done every year or renewed every year with approval of the County Agent. The horse certificate is a form similar to a registra-tion form. You can find it on the 4-H website under “Forms and Publications.” They are due on May 1st to the County Extension Office (not the State 4-H Office). Previous years, they have been due on April 15th, but the state deadline

date has been extended until May 1st. (Your county may have kept the April deadline which supersedes the state deadline).

Horses get sold, traded, and/or leased and this is the purpose to do them each year. This is a unique aspect to the project. Horse Certificates are required for any sanctioned 4-H horse show. The only way that the agent can verify that

the horse being used is the project horse, is for a 4-H member to document that they are the exhibitor, lessee, or owner of that particular horse.

Some counties also require those 4-H members in the rodeo project to submit horse certificates. It is strongly recommended that 4-H members submit a horse certificate for any horse that they may use as their project for the year.

2015 NM State 4-H Horse SchoolThe New Mexico State 4-H Horse School is scheduled for June 8-12, 2015. This event will be held in Albuquerque, NM, at the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds. The cost for attending is $250.00 per participant.

The registration deadline is determined by your County Extension Office, and registration is done through the County Extension office. Contact your County Agent for further details. Full refunds are available until June 1, 2015. A $100.00 cancellation fee is charged after that date.

For more information, go to the State 4-H website at: http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/ Click on the “Horse and Livestock Events” link on the left side of the page. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis for 175 participants.

NMYRM Camp to host 2015 eventBy Jack Blandford County Program Director Luna County Extension Office

New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service hopes to build on the success of its New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp when it hosts the event May 31 to June 5, 2015, at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in northern New Mexico.

The camp, designed for 15 to 19 year-old New Mexico youth, is an effort to reverse the aging trend in ranching. Nationally, the average age in the ranching community continues

to increase as more young people are opting to leave the ranch for careers outside production agriculture.

The youth selected to attend the camp will receive training in all aspects of ranch manage-ment, including reproduction and marketing of beef cattle, wildlife management, and range management.

Visit the camp’s website at http://nmyrm.nmsu.edu for information and to submit an online application.

Deadline for applications are May 1, 2015. A panel of industry leaders will review the applications and select the participants.

-

Successful applicants must submit a $300 camp fee prior to camp. Local organizations like the Soil and Water Conservation District, Farm Bureaus, or Rotary may be willing to sponsor the camper fee.

If you have any questions, contact Jack Blandford at 575-546-8006, or [email protected].
