Alameda, California – What do the NASA Mars Rover, the London

Underground, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner have in common?

They all rely on embedded technologies from Wind River® Systems.

Launched in 1981 as a two-person consultancy, Wind River today has

2,000 employees located at 20 sites worldwide. Wind River, the

global leader in embedded technology, offers the industry’s most

comprehensive device development portfolio.

Experiencing rapid growth in the last few years, Wind River has faced

challenges as its business expands. Among them: disparate business

communications systems (from strategic acquisitions) that over time

were a hindrance to high performance team engagement, and a

burden in terms of operational complexity and cost.

Engagement, Collaboration, Innovation

“Like many other highly distributed

global technology companies, Wind

River has teams all over the world

collaborating across functional lines to

deliver solutions our customers depend

on,” says CIO Scott Fenton. “Getting

teams — ranging from groups engineers,

software architects, customer service

specialties and others — to seamlessly

engage, collaborate and innovate with

one another was a top goal for Wind

River.”

The Wind River management team

recognized that the existing

environment of disparate business

communication installations

throughout the organization wasn’t

delivering the functionality they

needed. After looking at multiple

options, they settled on Avaya IP

Office Platform as the best UC

platform for their needs and their

vision for Wind River’s global

operations.

“The industries we serve are

characterized by high reliability and

high performance demands,” says

Mychal McCabe, Vice President of

Corporate Marketing. “Deep

engagement with our customers and

colleagues is absolutely critical to

Wind River’s success.”

The evaluation process Wind River

went through when looking at options

for their new communications

platform included a clear set of

primary criteria, including:

• Standardization

• Security

• High reliability

• CRM integration for the sales team

• Cost efficiencies

• Ease of use

• Ability to facilitate high-

performance engagement with

customers

“We selected Avaya as our supplier

for all our telecommunications needs

going forward, and we are integrating

Avaya into our business processes

and infrastructure, particularly in the

sales and the operations areas,” says

Fenton. “With Avaya IP Office, we can

reap the benefits of enhanced

collaboration and the ability to share

ideas, whether through audio or video

or some combination thereof.”

“This capability is instrumental to

realizing the goal of instant

communications, where employees at

different locations can actually feel as

if they’re in the same room together.”

“When we selected the Avaya

products,” Fenton adds, “the security

aspects were critical.”

“The Avaya products went through an

extensive review by our security

organization here at Wind River and

passed with flying colors.”

An Investment in Future Success

Wind River Systems recognizes that

the right business communications

system is an investment in future

success — at multiple levels.

At the most basic, Avaya IP Office

brings the benefits of company

standardization, simplicity, cost-

effectiveness, and reliability. As part

of Wind River’s deployment, all

company locations are to have the

same telephone sets. In moving from

one location to another, an employee

simply signs in to any phone. Because

they are already familiar with its

operation, there is no learning curve

and no missing features they are

accustomed to at their regular

location.

Beyond the basics, IP Office is also

equipped to serve as a full-featured,

powerful collaboration core platform

with powerful unified

communications capabilities.

Avaya provides capabilities for:

• Mobility

• Video solutions (supporting mobile

devices, desktops, and HD room

systems)

• Contact center solutions

(expandable from basic services to

multichannel capabilities, call

recording, and more)

• Security measures that help

mitigate the risks of toll fraud, call

hijacking, and denial of service

attacks — while enabling remote

workers without the need for VPN

Part of the mobility vision at Wind

River is to embrace a BYOD (“bring

your own device”) strategy and equip

employees, regardless of whether

their mobile device uses IOS and

Android, with Avaya one-X®

applications to integrate their

handheld into the enterprise

communication fabric.

Positive Business Impact

The flexibility and capabilities of

Avaya IP Office enable employees to

be reached at ‘one number’ on their

deskphone and also their mobile

devices. Employees can move around

the office or travel and take calls

on their mobile devices when they

are away from their desks. Fewer

missed calls mean fewer missed

opportunities and customer service

and support benefits.

By adopting Avaya’s session border

control solutions technology, Wind

River is also enabling more secure

work-at-home models for its

employees.

Integration with Wind River’s CRM

platform, Salesforce.com, allows

screen pop capability when

customers call, retrieving information

automatically on past transactions

and related information that the sales

person can use to maximize each

customer interaction.

Avaya one-X® Portal, a web-based

unified communications client,

consolidates access to various

applications in a single interface,

combining access to telephony

control, conferencing and messaging.

The client application is managed

centrally and does not required

software to be installed on user

computers.

Wind River has standardized on the

Avaya 9608 IP deskphone, an eight-

line set which offers high definition

audio and easy-to-use controls. The

deskphone offers an interface and

features consistent with the Avaya

one-X web application and mobile

endpoints that Wind River has

deployed.

Strategic Partner

Fenton and his team see Avaya as

more than a manufacturer, “The

bottom line is: I look at Avaya as a key

strategic partner for Wind River.”

“Avaya really understands our

business, how we can be successful,

and brings solutions to the table that

are going to help us get where we

want to go.”
