Alexander the Great was born in 356 BCE in Pella When Alexander was 13 he became the pupil of Aristotle When Alexander went to war a rumor was spread that he was dead In 333 BCE, Alexander became seriously ill but recovered and

continued to fight into Syria When Alexander entered Babylon he was diagnosed with Malaria Alexander died on

June 13, 323 BCE His body was placed in a solid

gold coffin!!

Athens were the first to introduce Democracy to the ancient Greek world

Only men were allowed to vote Most of the time if you were a citizen you got to chose if you

wanted to go to the army or not The assembly made sure that

everyone followed the laws During meetings men were allowed

to speak up and had the rights to speak

their opinion

Athenian soldiers were required to serve two years in the military After the first year they were given a sword and a shield with state

emblem on it Most wars between city-states were due to problems concerning

harvest or livestock, sometimes over power In 448-447 Athens and Sparta fought a war called Peloponnesian

war Of course, Woman were not allowed in the army

Athens’ cargo ships used sails and oars to get where they were going

Cargo ships often carried wine, wheat, olive oil, perfume and metal objects

58% of men became sailors on cargo ships Even when they were only traveling to another city they went by

boat because of the rocky hills Most cargo ships weight 150 tons Almost all cargo ships were made of wood

Farming in ancient Greece was difficult due to the limited amount of good soil and cropland.

One record showed a farmer making 30,000 drachmas in a year off his large farm.

Farmer grew enough food to support their families and at times they grew a small surplus to sell at the local markets

Most farmer were small with four or five acres of land They made the barley into porridge or ground if in to flour used for

wine production
