2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

LEAD|ENGAGE|ACHIEVE|DEVELOP

Working together to strengthen our community by inspiring people to lead.

Since 1985, LEAD Brevard’s contribution to our community’s future is best exemplified by the development and participation of our local leaders and as facilitator and host to the conversations that help move Brevard County forward.

Our Leadership Brevard Class of 2016 has thrived all year, creating personal bonds that will last well beyond their graduation, at which time they will join an extended family of 1,000+ program alumni. With the knowledge and social capital gained through our flagship program, the Class of 2016 is poised to help build a stronger community.

In addition to Leadership Brevard, this year’s Annual Report highlights many of the great successes and events we shared together over the past 12 months – from our Leadership Awards to our Community Stakeholder Summit, and all the other opportunities to network, learn and build business and personal relationships throughout the year.

Looking to the future, the LEAD Brevard Endowment Fund represents our opportunity to support local leadership development in perpetuity through scholarships; I hope you will consider a gift to ensure that our established legacy of helping to develop Brevard County’s future leaders and of hosting critical conversations will be cemented into place in a sustainable way.

As members of the LEAD Brevard family, each of us has a story to tell about where we are today because of Leadership Brevard – a story about our willingness to show up and participate.

Like the majority of Space Coast residents, I too am a transplant – having lived in New York City, Tucson, Chicago, St. Louis, Orlando, Kansas City and Dallas before settling in this hidden gem of Central Florida that I now call “home.” Establishing roots can be challenging, especially for those who don’t grow up in the community and have lifelong relationships upon which to build. For me, starting a new business in a new locale seemed overwhelming, so meeting people and getting involved became a top priority.

Fortunately, I found Leadership Brevard and entered the Class of 2007. Upon graduation, I joined the organization’s board of directors, as its mission for “working together to strengthen our community by inspiring people to lead” aligned with my professional and personal values and beliefs.

For those of us who choose to capitalize on our Leadership Brevard experience, it serves as a springboard to connect and engage with those individuals and organizations that can and will influence the direction of the Space Coast for us, our children and generations to follow.

FUTURE THINKING: Smart Community Building

Friday, October 30, 2015

The theme of ‘Future Thinking – Smart Community Building’ focused attention on how major economic drivers in our community are adapting to the demands of their industries and markets. Each of the institutions featured operates differently than they did in the last economic cycle; in those stories of change are lessons and opportunities for us all.

LEAD Brevard is proud to host the Space Coast’s annual stakeholder summit, featuring the state of the county presentation. We patron the concept that leadership wants to — and should — provide information and feedback. As Brevard’s leadership needs continue to evolve, LEAD Brevard remains a constant resource for growing the next generations of community leaders and convening conversations that influence our community.

Brevard County Manager Stockton Whitten provided an overview of the state of the county and reminded those present of the key objectives of Brevard County government; a community which excels and is recognized for providing a broad array of quality of life services —

■ Assuring Quality Infrastructure■ Maintaining and facilitating Livable,

Safe and Secure Communities■ Maintaining the Justice System

■ Economic and Community Development

■ Providing Assistance to Those in Need

■ Protecting Natural Resources, Cleaning Up and Preventing Environmental Risks

■ Ensuring Civil and other Liberties

Following Mr. Whitten’s remarks, a group of community leaders reacted to those comments and to questions from moderator Matt Reed, Public Interest Editor, FLORIDA TODAY Communications. Community panel members were Janet Petro, John F. Kennedy Space Center; Kim Rezanka, Dean Mead Law Firm; Peter Richards, Gulftainer Group and Captain Winston Scott, Florida Institute of Technology.

LEAD Brevard’s Financial Highlights YE 2016

Share the Leadership! Are you one of the 51%?

If 51% of Leadership Brevard graduates contributed just $500 during one fiscal year, we’d raise over $250,00! With a 3% ROI, LEAD Brevard could offer multiple Leadership Brevard class of 2017 scholarships.

In June 2014, the LEAD Brevard Board of Directors approved the creation of the LEAD Brevard Foundation Fund, a philanthropic and charitable fund to begin an endowment to support and sustain the programs of LEAD Brevard with scholarships to its signature program Leadership Brevard and other organizational support.

Milo Zonka, Leadership Brevard ‘2005 and immediate past chairman of the board of directors says, “This fund represents the culmination of dedicated community leaders’ efforts as volunteers over the last 31 years. The LEAD Brevard Foundation Fund will assure that LEAD Brevard can provide a forum for critical leadership learning and candid community discussions far into the future”.

Building an endowment fund ensures that the leadership of the future will have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the connections that are part of every Leadership Brevard class.

A gift to the LEAD Brevard Endowment Fund is a pool of capital that is self-perpetuating. Donations are combined and invested to maximize returns while preserving capital. In this way, we are building an important legacy that will enable us to respond to emerging community needs. Consider making your legacy gift to the LEAD Brevard Foundation Fund at the Community Foundation for Brevard.

*The fund is initially seeded with monies from LEAD Brevard cash reserves and is in partnership with the Community Foundation for Brevard.
