Hello everyone,

We have come to the end of another busy College year and the Governors have worked closely with the Headteacher and staff over the year to ensure the delivery of the best possible all round education and experiences that make attending Immanuel so unique.

We have been getting on and doing things which you most probably don’t realise happen: monitoring health and safety and safeguarding; finance checks to ensure accountability; analysing pupil’s progress; building relationships with staff and pupils; interviewing potential staff members. The list goes on, but we enjoy what we do to support the College.

On behalf of the Governors I would like to wish you all a restful summer holiday and, for the staff and pupils who are leaving, I wish you all the very best for the future.

Denise Sterling

Chair of Governors

This has been another busy year, packed full of hard work, activities and events. We have been watching carefully as our new extension takes shape. Staff and students have coped incredibly well with the disruption that this has brought. We look forward to the build being finished as well as the new floor extending the mezzanine in the dining room and the cover for the quad.

Year 11 and 13 have been a pleasure to work with this year. They have worked really hard and we all look forward to the results in August.

This year has seen a huge variety of trips, visits and reward activities. In this edition of ‘The Message’ you will be able to see what they have done. It is pleasing to note that wherever they go our students are complimented for their positive attitude and good manners and behaviour.

Charitable work has been at the heart of the school life; we have raised money for Jeans for Genes, Macmillan, Breast Cancer Now, Children in Need, Save the Children, Comic Relief, British Heart Foundation, Bradford Soup Run, Epilepsy UK, Bradford Burns Unit, Wear it Purple, Claret and Amber day and Tanzania KYGN.

This is a Church school and our values of Character, Perseverance and Hope are the pivot upon which all our work is based; for example our charity work has raised £3174.84 this year. I think you can see these shine through in this copy of the message.

On behalf of the Governors and the staff I wish you a peaceful and restful Summer.

The Message 3

We would like to congratulate a former student of Immanuel College, Lucy Bleazard, for completing her Medicine degree this summer.

Lucy left Immanuel in July 2013 and went on to study Medicine at Leicester University. As part of her intensive studies Lucy managed to complete her medical elective in St Vincent and the Grenadines –an incentive to study Medicine if there ever was one!

We are incredibly proud of Lucy and wish her all the best in her career!

This term, 37 year 9 and year 10 students completed the expedition section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. They set off in glorious sunshine from Harewood House, and walked all the way to Bramhope Scout campsite. Along the way, they had to do all the navigating themselves, and they didn’t get (too!) lost. They then pitched their tents and cooked their own dinners, before doing the whole thing again the next day, walking from Bramhope to Menston. They were a real credit to the school, and all had a fantastic time.

Ever wondered how it would feel to customise a designer coat? On a visit to Burberry offices in the centre of Leeds, 10 Immanuel students had the opportunity to do just that.

Immanuel College took part in an inspiration day to learn about what it would be like to work for a top designer brand like Burberry and to take part in two designer challenges.

For the first challenge, each group of students were given an iconic Burberry mac, retail value approx. £1400, to redesign in any style they chose. The students were given fabric pencils, scissors, tape, ribbons, etc. and a brief to create something inspirational and new. The teachers in the room all just wanted to take away an un-cut up mac, but had to sit back and watch as the scissors were put into action! Some fantastic designs were created and modelled, including a leopard inspired jacket to promote conservation and a Burberry skirt.

For the second challenge, students had to develop a unique product for Burberry, one Immanuel team created a Burberry monogrammed bed set – and won!

After a pizza lunch, a Q & A with current Burberry team members and a tour of the fabulous offices, set over 4 floors, the students were completely exhausted on the minibus ride back to school!

Thank you to Go Higher West Yorkshire for funding the visit and to Teach First and Burberry for hosting the day.

Trips & Visits

This year our KS4 students visited Le Touquet in France. After a very early start, they arrived on 23rd May and headed straight to a local sweet factory to see sweet making in action.

The next day the group headed to Parc Asterix for a jam packed day on the rides. No queuing was required in the quietest theme park anyone had ever been to – thank you to Mr Gomez’s amazing planning!

Over the next few days the students visited a goat farm, a cathedral in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, visited a model village and chocolate factory, learnt about V2 rockets and allied forces at a German Bunker, had a famous French trip picnic and sampled various snail dishes!

The staff and students had a fantastic time and returned home with new friends and lots of happy memories!

Trips & Visits

The Message 7

At the end of June, 37 students from years 8 and 9 embarked on a French trip to the Opal Coast area of France. The students gained first-hand experience of French culture, which would have otherwise only be discussed in the classroom. They watched a sweet making demonstration, which was rewarded with a sample of free sweets. The students also became the chocolate connoisseurs and decorated their own chocolate bars. The biggest food challenge for them though was eating snails. Many were apprehensive, but once they braved it, they realised just how much it tasted of mushrooms. It was not all

about food though – they also went to a goat farm where they milked some goats, went to a Sealife centre and saw everything from Nemo to Pingu and, to get away from the heat, they also went to a Water Park (apparently the slides are still the same in France, but the signs were in French, so they were still taking part in their learning!). Needless to say that on their journey back, when the teacher bellowed that they were back in BD10, the students were so tired they asked if they could sleep for a bit longer on the coach!

Careers

On Wednesday 10th July four Year 7 students attended the National Finals of the Ryman National Enterprise Challenge. This was the culmination of weeks of hard work, stemming from the National Enterprise Challenge Day where all Year 7 participated at the end of October. Representing Team Cracker were Steven Hague, Charlie Dailey-Boots, Mikey Baxter and Adimchinobi Okechukwu. Having travelled by train and tube to Wembley Stadium, the team delivered a 4 minute presentation to business experts, participated in a Lego education workshop and took in the sights of our iconic national stadium. Team Cracker then watched the Grand Final, hosted by Diversity’s Jordan and Perri and judged by former Dragon’s Den ‘dragon’ and Ryman CEO Theo Paphitis. Throughout, the students continually demonstrated their perseverance and built on their character, pioneering a competition that will be repeated for next the Year 7 cohort.

National Enterprise Challenge Final

In April, Immanuel College hosted the Successful Futures team from NYBEP who conducted mock interviews with 30 Year 11 and 60 Year 12 students. In preparation, students had to complete a job application that was then scrutinised during a 15 min mock interview. Over 17 businesses and institutions volunteered on the day and while there was anxiety coming into the room on the part of some students, all left with smiles across their faces, grateful for the positive experience. The volunteers were incredibly complementary of our students who have demonstrated real hope for the future!

Careers

The Message 9

In January 2019 Year 9 students were offered the chance to participate in the GO4SET challenge, a STEAM team project that encourages them to consider jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The project took place across several months. The challenge was to redesign Bradford Interchange railway station, making it ‘future proof’ and enticing for the modern customer. Out of 4 groups, 3 had the perseverance to make it to the final day of judging on 12th April. The winners, with a design boasting architecture that heralds back to Bradford’s industrious past, whilst incorporating access for every user and sustainable planning, were the ‘Bensons’. The team was awarded a trophy for their hard work. On the judging panel were representatives from VolkerRail, who operate in Doncaster.

On Thursday 4th July our Year 7 and 8 students attended their very first careers fair arranged by the College in collaboration with Ahead Partnership. Immanuel hosted stalls representing over 15 businesses and further education institutions, including our own Sixth Form, and our Prospects careers advisor, Akeel Hussain. The students were wonderful, and there was a palpable sense of excitement and enthusiasm for where they may wish to go in their lives.

Careers Fair

On Tuesday 18th June 18 Immanuel girls visited the Yorkshire Water treatment facility in Headingley. The afternoon was designed to increase the profile of STEAM careers amongst girls as there is a current shortage of females in STEAM careers. The girls listened intently to how water is purified, toured the automated water works, completed the water supply challenge and undertook scientific tests on pure and raw water. Students also listened to a presentation delivered by a Yorkshire Water employee about how she became interested in STEAM careers.

Sports News

76 students took part in the Hanson Summer Games which took place over the course of 3 days. We had students taking part in swimming, triathlon, rugby, rowing, cricket, rounders and athletics. There were 14 schools who entered the event and we finished 5th overall with some excellent performances from our students. Joe Boyle and Emma Cowley won the 800m, Toby Sale won the 100m and the cricket and rounders teams won their tournaments. All students who took part did themselves proud and were a credit to the school.

Summer Games

There has been a great turn out for rounders practice this year and we entered teams in the league for years 7 to 10. The matches were played at Bradford Girls’ Grammar school and all teams played really well. Unfortunately year 9 narrowly lost one game so didn’t make it to the finals. However year 7, 8 and 10 won all of their games and went to the finals at South Craven on the 1st July.

Year 7 beat Tong but lost to Ilkley Grammar.Year 8 beat Bradford Academy but lost to Ilkley Grammar.Year 10 beat Tong but lost to South Craven.

Overall, all three teams came second in the Bradford League which is the best we have ever done! Well done to all the players.

Bouldering

The Year 7 girls played against other local Bradford schools and won the Marley Tournament! Throughout the whole tournament they won every game! Each player won a trophy and a football. The year 7 girls have won both tournaments they have entered this year showing high hopes for the future!

Year 7

For the past 6 weeks we have been taking a group of students bouldering at The Depot in Pudsey. After impressing on the first day they were given the chance to complete a NICAS Level 1 qualification. All the students have worked extremely hard to achieve this and have shown huge levels of perseverance and character. The students showed continuous hard work when the challenge seemed difficult and found solutions to the problems on the wall. A massive congratulations to them all!

Sports EventImmanuel took a clean sweep of the trophies on offer at the BDAT Sports Event, with a whole host of truly remarkable performances over the two days. The athletics competition took place on day one and many students excelled in their events against competitors from BBEC, BFA & BVG. Although there were many outstanding performances throughout the day; Delilah Nelson running 14.97s in the 100m, Bradley Ferguson running 28.78s in the 200m and Harsahib Sudle throwing 11.2m in the shot putt are worthy of a special mention.

Day two was the sports spectacular event, with many team competitions taking place at the Zara Sports Centre. Immanuel students once again competed fantastically in all events, showing great perseverance, character and sportsmanship throughout the day. Students took part in a wide range of activities including boccia, badminton, dance, benchball, football and rounders.

Immanuel students did so well over the course of the two days that we won the whole BDAT Sports Event for the first time - much to the delight of all students who took part over the course of the two days!

Post 16 News

We said our final farewell to year 13 on Friday 28th June. The leaver’s assembly concluded 7 fantastic years at Immanuel College for our students. The Post 16 team have been proud to watch a tenacious year group achieve the best AS results in the school’s history and stood in awe of 6 students who were chosen for interview at The University of Oxford and Cambridge. So many unbelievable achievements from a talented year group. We will definitely miss having them in Post 16 and look forward seeing their hard work pay off on results day (Thursday 22nd August).

The Message 13

An overwhelming number of year 12 students rushed to sign up for a once in a lifetime cooking experience with Mr Gomez. The legendary chemistry teacher can also cook and has been kind enough to share his famous ‘jerk chicken’ recipe with students. Chicken wasn’t the only item on the menu; pork, Quorn and halal meat were also served up. The overall atmosphere was great, with Christian Reggae music played in the background. A superb end of year treat for our hard working year 12 students.

A group of year 12 students have signed up to undertake an additional qualification to run alongside their A Levels in year 13. The Extended Project Qualification is 5,000 word (mini dissertation) that impresses admissions tutors at competitive universities and is favoured by many competitive university course tutors. The independent research project was launched by attending a research session at the Laidlaw Library at The University of Leeds. Students were able to use the library facilities to gather books and journals to support their project.

Northumbria University sent a student ambassador to Immanuel College to officially launch the UCAS process to year 12 students. The day included reasons why university is a good idea, budgeting, planning meals, what to include in a personal statement and how to select the best course and university for you. Students were left better informed about their post 18 choices and many have already started visiting university open days and attending lectures.
