Vol. XXIII No. 3
March 2020
Lent is the period of forty weekdays before Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday. Throughout scripture, people wear ashes as part of mourning and repentance. Thus we began the season of Lent with ashes as we recognized all of the ways that we do not live up to God’s call in our lives. Since the early church, Lent has been a special time of penitence, a time when Christians examined their lives to see what God was saying and what they should be doing.
Through the early centuries, Lent was a time that included penitence, self-examination, and spiritual practices to bring one closer to God. The point of all activities and practices was to focus one’s life and experience on loving and serving God.
Lent continues to be a time of reflection and to grow closer to God. For some, it means giving up something. For a long time, fasting has been a huge part of Lent, with some churches encouraging eating smaller meals or cutting out meat and then giving any money saved to the church or to otherwise help the poor. Others give up certain attitudes and views: fear of failure, or over commitment, or hatred.
Lent can also be a time to take on something. This can mean rededicating ourselves to a regular spiritual practice of prayer or scripture. For others, Lent is a time to ask “What is God calling me to do as something new or different or as a way of express-ing my commitment to Jesus Christ in a new or fuller way?” It’s a prayerful effort to ask God to show us a new form or direction for our ministries as disciples of Jesus Christ.
In the Judaism of Jesus’ day, prayer was experienced all the time in many forms. The family gathered family every Friday night for Sabbath prayers. Men gathered in the synagogue nightly for Evening Prayers. There were family prayers of bless-ing offered at meals and other times of the day. Sabbath worship was corporate prayer and corporate reading of scripture, which functioned as prayer as well. Then, if you got to Jerusalem, you

could also experience the regular cycles of sacrifice and prayer throughout the day.
The teachings of Jesus make little sense and lack power when cut off from the practices of prayer and community life in which they were articulated. Attempting to follow Jesus today, to be his disciple, likewise becomes almost incoherent without a lively, rich set of practices of prayer in many forms and formats of community.
So, this Lenten season, we are focusing on prayer. We began on our knees and will continue as we dive into the Lord’s Prayer and other practices, grounding our Lenten journey in prayer.
May God be with you this Lenten Season, -Pastor Annie
On March 29th (the 5th Sunday of March) Dennis Mennenga will present the “Twelve “Twelve Days Before Easter”Days Before Easter” during our morning worship.
This is a wonderful way to culminate the Lenten season and prepare for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
Preparing Your Heart for Easter
Don’t forget the “Friend a Senior”
program that our Mission & Outreach
Committee hopes to set up in our
church. Contact the church office for
more information.
There are many seniors in our
community who really need someone
in their life; someone to be their
friend; someone to help with picking
up meds; someone to
take them to church
or out to eat; or
someone to whom
just to talk.
We wanted to share this photo of
Harlan “Pop” and Carol Bottles as they celebrated their 71st wedding
anniversary on February 12th!

characters are examined as a challenge and encouragement.
I may only have been back in Illinois for a few days, but I remember
from my days living here that March comes in like a lion, and leaves
with tornadoes, not lambs! Lambs, I think, are a bit of wishful thinking,
because by the end of this month we will be so close to Easter and
Resurrection Sunday!
So, for the month of March, Wednesday night youth groups will be
diving into the traditional Easter story of Job.
Wait, what?!?
You read correctly. Job is a story of unjust pain and suffering, and the
amazing case study of how Job handles his undeserved suffering will
ultimately help us tackle the question of why Jesus had to suffer.
Hopefully, the things we’ll be learning will help answer more intimate,
personal questions of why, at times, life stinks so much. This six week
lesson is a great jumping in point for youth who are angry with God,
struggling to understand why He allows so much evil and suffering in
this world. I encourage you to invite these kids to Wednesday nights in
March! I’d love to meet and talk to them, along with, of course, our
regulars!
Continue to support the youth as they fundraise for summer camps!
Your generous assistance is appreciated so much! Finally, my door is
always open at First United! Whether you are young or old, don’t
hesitate to drop by and introduce yourself!
Dana Miller, Director of Student Ministries
Who ARE these youth with their whipping cream disguises? Everyone enjoyed this
game at Youth Group this past week including their fearless leader, Dana (picture not
included!). The object of the game was to see how many turns it took before you
received a face full of delicious creamy goodness.

On Feb 14th a local LeRoy family suffered the loss of their home
and all its contents to a fire. Harley Pendley remains in the
hospital in Springfield with severe burns and 10 family members
Are currently in temporary housing. But because the home was
uninsured their future needs are great.
Our Mission & Outreach committee has donated funds for the family but it has come
to our attention that there has been a fund set up for the family at Busey Bank for
those individuals wishing to help.
If you would like to donate, please go in or mail your donation to Busey Bank (301 E
Cedar St. LeRoy IL. 61752), for the "Harley Pendley Family Relief Fund". Your
donation will be greatly appreciated.
An important item will be on the March 17th ballot that involves LeRoy
Schools and as always it is important that everyone have as many facts
as possible and then come and VOTE!
The building of an auditorium to be attached to the Elementary School
has been proposed with an anticipated cost of $8,315,000. The pro-
posed plan is to pay for the project through the selling of bonds which is similar to a
homeowner refinancing a current mortgage for a home addition. The interest rate is
projected to be 3.75% to refinance the current debt of $2.73 million and is expected to
extend the current term by 15 years with the current interest rate reduced. No new
taxes would be levied for the project.
It is forecasted that the facility would be used at least 134 of 180 school year days as
well as up to 20 days during the summer. Additional uses would be non-performing
arts events, meetings or community use. If the referendum passes they would expect
to break ground in the spring of 2021 and occupy the new addition for the 2022-23
school year.
For more information go to www.PantherProgress.com
FUPC does not endorse nor oppose approval of this referendum.
