Why LMS?Schoology LMSSDSU/LDTBy Kimberly Paytas
Welcome to Module one
You are about to start a journey into the world of online learning and hybrid blended learning. This is module one of a six part module and is meant as an introduction of key terms and benefits of an LMS and specifically Schoology In this first module you will be learning new terms, differentiating among technologies, and experiencing hands-on what you are learning and what you can bring back to the classroom. In module two you will learn about hybrid blended learning, how it enhances learning, pedagogy online learning and key elements of online learning.
If you have any questions please contact me at: [email protected]
What do you know about online learning?
• I promise this is an assessment.
• Please click on your name .Survey, name 1, name 2, name 3.) There you will find a google doc of the survey. Please fill this out by (date)

Elements of online learning:
LMS
Website
SISMMS
Social Media
In the next slides we will learn a little about each of these elements of online learning.
• An LMS is a Learning Management System. It is creates a teaching and learning environment that integrates with other technologies and has many tools for:
• Communication – email, discussion forums, conferencing, and announcements
• Shared lessons – stored in one location utilizing standardized format
• Classroom management – track assignment completion, gradebook etc.
• Assessment tools – standards and rubrics, quizzes created & stored
• Multimedia – integrated to a host of tools for audio, video, images, and text
• Resource link: 8 Advantages of a Learning Management System
Elements of online Learning: LMS
Why LMS?
Question: I just use a website. It works fine for me. Everyone can get access to it and its easy.
Answer: Wouldn’t it be great to have standard features for adding courses and student assignments, standardized assessment tool that allows for quick feedback regardless of device, a discussion forum and groups and cloud storage and all of this with one log in?
Resource link: Reasons to Use Learning Management System (LMS)
• Like the galaxy –millions of unconnected clusters
• Online format that is accessible to the general public or a private local area network.
• Many of the features of an LMS but not automatically integrated
• Store content including multimedia like: video, images, webpages, etc
• Easy to set up – anyone can create one
Elements of online Learning: Website
• Schoology can be integrated with a Student Information System. An SIS integrates with a gradebook on an LMS. It makes sure that course, enrollment, and other student information in both systems remains accurate and consistent throughout the school year. This is done through a two-way syncing process that pulls data from an SIS Schoology and vice versa. The integration provides the ability to implement an automated synchronization of data, exponentially increasing accuracy of the data stored by eliminating human error.
Elements of online Learning: SIS
"Schoology is the digital hub of instructional materials that makes resources accessible to students, parents, and teachers through the interface they use every day. "With SIS integration, teachers can enter grades once into Schoology and have it populate both the Schoology and Skyward gradebooks, saving them time and ensuring the data in both systems is consistent and current."
Elements of online Learning: SIS Benefit
• MMS link is a Microsoft Media streaming link. MMS stands for Microsoft Media Server. It can be integrated with Schoology. MMS allows for WMS which is a Microsoft streaming link. That means that it allows you to generate audio and video like JPEG and MP3.
• MMS messages can carry content up to 300KB in extensions of WAV, JPEG, Gif etc.
• MMS ties the LMS to a whole host of tools that allow for streaming of multimedia.
Elements of online Learning: MMS
• If your not techy this is the magic behind the operations like the wizard in the Wizard of OZ. MMS allows you to send pictures, sounds, video, text, or any combination of the four.
• MMS ties the LMS to a whole host of tools that allow for streaming of multimedia.
Elements of online Learning: MMS Benefit
• Studies show that communication is one of the most important elements in learning. As a teacher communication is key with your s. This basic principle has not changed but how it happens has changed drastically. Texting, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Instagram is a way of life for our students. We all know that there is a positive and negative side to this. If we embrace it, we have the power to accentuate the positive. If our students live in a world of instant reward lets give it to them in the form of collaboration with their peers with a purpose, immediate feedback from us on an assignment, and consistent informing of our expectations and protocols using whatever social media tool best fits the bill. Social Media in education is about using new tools to do what great teachers have always done.

Schoology is a free LMS that is user friendly. It includes a Facebook-style newsfeed so you can see all your activities in one view: all your classes, customizable grade Book with Rubrics and standards. Your students can submit assignments from a mobile device IOS/Android to the drobox and it will automatically annotate as a PDF. (From schoology website)

Schoology LMS
Why Schoology?
iTunes U if a free LMS also and it integrates so easily with all those great Apple devices. However, leaves anyone who is not an Apple user out in the cold. It also is does not have a dropbox for students to upload assignments an assessment tool. So even though it is fun and easy to use and incorporate ios media it functions more as a learning content deployment tool then an LMS. (from iTune U)
iTunes U is similar to Schoology

iTunes U shortcomings for education
• Despite the steady improvements in iTunes U, the app continues to lack some critical functions that would need to be in place to replace your LMS.
• The main shortcoming of iTunes U is the lack of SIS integration. Populating rosters and dealing with add/drops is a necessity for any widely deployed learning app. Nor are there any analytics. Assignment submission and gradebook are improving, but the functionality is limited. It is doubtful that the collaboration features will scale to larger classes. And the instructor course management tools are underdeveloped.
Schoology feature/benefit assessment & discussion
NOW IT’S YOUR TERM TO DO A COMPARISON CHARTThere are three parts to this assessment: 1.Complete the Schoology to website comparison table, (Use Schoology vs iTunes U chart as an example 2. Name three benefits of Schoology and 3. Take one benefit and tell how that benefit would improve the teaching and enhance student learning.Click on link above to see full instructions.
Schoology vs Website assessment
• Read about the functionality of a website in this link.
• Pulling together what you have learned on this module both from the module itself and from the resource links, complete as a team the LMS vs website table using the same rubric that you used for Schoology vs iTunes U
• Each of you has access to the same document and your mission is to divvy up the project evenly between all team members. One example would for each member to complete two of the six sections. Don’t forget the discussion forum.
