ing data on pairing more efficient narrow-

band red emitting phosphors with com-

mercially used techniques is now avail-

able. Titled “Narrow-band Red Emitting

Phosphors: Creating High Performance LED

Light Sources and Fixtures” this document

explains the new technology called TriGain.

Second is IES DG-4-14, “Design Guide for

Roadway Lighting Maintenance.” It shows

how sound maintenance practice can pro-

vide a safe and high-performing nighttime

environment for vehicles and pedestrians

while minimizing maintenance costs.

The IES completed six new publications over

the past year. LEM-7-13, “Lighting Controls for

Energy Management,” covers lighting con-

trol systems of interior and exterior environ-

ments for all types of buildings. It addresses

energy-saving strategies while meeting light-

ing quality requirements.

IES LEM-3-13 is the “IES Guidelines for

Upgrading Lighting Systems in Commercial

and Institutional Spaces” that advises the

reader to be aware of the balance between

quality lighting and energy savings. It

provides a series of Upgrade Briefs that

describe equipment alternatives for suc-

cessful upgrades.

Procedures and precautions for obtaining

and reproducing luminous flux and color

maintenance measurements for LEDs,

as well as standard test environmental

conditions, are outlined in IES LM-84-14,

“Approved Method: Measuring Luminous

Flux and Color Maintenance of LED Lamps,

Light Engines and Luminaires.”

IES LM-85-14, “Approved Method: Electrical

and Photometric Measurements of High-

Power LEDs,” provides a uniform test method

for accurate operational, photometric and col-

orimetric measurements of high-power LEDs.

The final IES publication is the

“Recommended Practice for Daylighting

Buildings,” RP-5-13. With its recommenda-

tions, electric lighting energy can be reduced

by 40 percent in side-lighted daylight zones

and more than 50 percent in top-lighted

zones through the use of daylight delivery

methods, glazing systems, shading tech-

niques and control strategies.

Lighting Analysis for Revit is introduced by

AutoDesk. This software will perform day-

light analysis on detailed models and gen-

erate documents for LEED submission. It

uses a proprietary engine based on a mul-

tidimensional lightcuts algorithm operating

in the cloud to perform solar and electric

lighting simulations for buildings up to 1000

times faster than traditional software.
