Welcome to LCCWelcome! Theres a lot going on at London College of Communication and weve done our best to come up with a guide packed full of need-to-know information to help you make the most out of your time at the College, starting from day one.

Most of the time youll be lucky enough to stumble across exciting projects, clubs and other opportunities, but sometimes you have to seek them out.

This guide tells you where youll find information on inspiring and exciting activities, joining societies and sports clubs and how to go about meeting like-minded or not so like-minded people.

It also includes information about fantastic University resources you can use such as our in-house recruitment agency, Artstemps, where you can find work placements; Student Enterprise

and Employability (SEE) where you can find out how to get funding for your creative business ideas; you can also find out how to sign up for evening classes; and access our impressive technical facilities.

This guide also aims to cover the less exciting but still important stuff such as where to go for advice on finances, accommodation and whos there to help when you need someone to talk to. Youre joining a creative community of around 5,000 students and we want you to enjoy the experience. We cant wait to see what you bring to life at LCC. Help with money, immigration and personal issues

When you have to deal with your own money or immigration matters for the first time, or if other things happen that affect your studies, its important to know there are specialist staff on site available to help. The staff in the Student Services area specialise in Student Advice, Student Counselling, Health Advice and Disability and can help with many support matters.

Improve your academic performance

Academic Study Support provides additional guidance to develop your learning strategies and skills. Its all about improvement in areas such as: understanding academic language; time, workload and project management; effective research, reading and analysis; critical thinking; planning and structuring written work;

constructing effective arguments; referencing and citation; presentation skills; transitioning from different levels of study.

Disability advice and support

Health and Safety advice

Our Health and Safety Officer, Karen Godfrey, can help you with advice on how to complete risk assessments for projects, exhibitions, work placements and any other College activities. The International Office offers advice and support to all international students. If you have a query or comment about your experience at LCC our International Experience Officer, Chris Bryant, is happy to help. Get involved Join a society or sports team

This is the best way to meet other students from across UAL. With groups ranging from Capoeira classes to the African Caribbean cultural society youre sure to find something that suits you. To sign up visit suarts.org/groups.

The benefits of being a member of the Students Union

On enrolling at the University as a full or part-time student you are automatically a member of your Students Union (SUARTS).

SUARTS is the body that represents students across all of the colleges at the University and is led by democratically elected student officers.

SUARTS offers an independent and impartial advice service for individual students. The advice team are there to help if things arent going how you expected them to and to make sure every students course experience is fair and equal.

SUARTS is a creative union for creative students the union provides both creative events and creative opportunities for students; from chances to exhibit in external galleries to one of the largest creative networking and buddying schemes in the country.

Find housemates and swap skills with other students

Commonplace is a great website run by UAL students which includes a brilliant swap shop service where you can find house/flat mates, swap skills or unwanted items and collaborate with students from other courses and disciplines, as well as top tips from existing students, illustrated FAQs and lots more to help you get the most out of this big city. You can also contribute to the content.

Becoming an LCC Student Ambassador

Become a Student Ambassador and represent LCC at internal and external events that promote the work and ethos of LCC and the University. Student Ambassadors work closely with the Widening Participation team visiting schools and FE colleges and speaking to students interested in coming to study at LCC. They also help the Communications team by attending UCAS fairs and acting as stewards during the Summer Shows.

The International Office also offers advice to any student interested in participating in an international work placement or exchange. Exchanges are specific to individual courses. Making the most of College facilities Technical Resources

As an LCC student you have access to impressive facilities across the College and UAL.

Students studying a range of film, photography, television and journalism courses have access to the following resources, subject to availability: A fully equipped HD television studio Six photography studios Two professional print and

radio newsrooms A moving image post production

department, containing eight individual edit suites, an Apple Mac training lab and professional sound finishing suites

Specialist photography is resourced through two digital photography labs and numerous colour and black and white darkrooms.

Sound design students have access to three professional quality sound studios, sound labs and digital and analogue recording facilities.

The graphic moving image facilities include a physical computing lab and animation workshops, where students will find digital and analogue resources: Rostrum cameras Light box studios Green screen animation facilities Physical computing studios IT suites equipped with the latest

industry software

Facilities for students studying graphics and design courses include: Two fully equipped printmaking

workshops, where regular inductions are held in a variety of printing techniques. All LCC students have access to these workshops after completing an induction session and subject to availability.

A newly refurbished 3D wood and metalwork studio containing laser cutting and plastics machines. All LCC students have access to these workshops after completing an induction session and subject to availability.

The Digital Fabric Print Bureau at London College of Fashions John Princes Street campus (room 323) is a digital fabric print service all UAL students are encouraged to use.

Although certain facilities are prioritised for some specialist courses, our technical resource structure enables all students, where possible, to explore all of the Colleges technical facilities. For full information on all of our technical recourses see lcctech.arts.ac.uk.

The Kit Room is a central equipment store that gives all students access to a wide selection of video, photographic and sound equipment to support specialist and non-specialist course requirements. You can pre-book equipment loans through orb.arts.ac.uk/lcc. Open access inductions will be held weekly. Details on how to sign up will be available from the Kit Room team.

The Digital Space is an open access area featuring media and design industry focused software, a Tech Talk Demonstration area hosting a regular series of inductions and demonstrations, both PC and Mac computers, collaborative space and laptop areas.

Library Services

Library Services supports teaching, learning and research within the College. Services include a variety of learning resources: books, journals, DVDs, electronic books and databases.

The online catalogue gives you access to the catalogues and collections of the Universitys six libraries as well as remote access to other University catalogues

Electronic books, journals and databases are available 24 hours a day through our e-library

Networked PCs and Macs are available in the Library with internet access and MS Office and Creative Suite applications installed

Printing, scanning and photography facilities are available for self-service

You can borrow laptops, headphones and multi-card readers for use within the space

The Library is a member of schemes such as SCONUL Access, which allow access for UAL Higher Education (HE) students at other university libraries, also students in their second or third years working on dissertations, all postgraduate students and staff can request inter-library loans

Learning Zone

This is located within the Library at LCC but also in the Central Saint Martins Library at the Kings Cross campus. They are informal student-focused facilities designed to encourage a culture of student ownership and peer support, with professional staff on hand to help you. Advisers in the Learning Zones are especially focused on digital skills and can help if you are new to Moodle or need help using online tutorials such as lynda.com.

Archives and Special Collections Centre

The Universitys Archives and Special Collections Centre, based at LCC, holds a remarkable range of archives and special collections with strengths in film-making, graphic design and the history of printing.

The Centre houses many different collections including:

Stanley Kubrick Archive The archive spans Kubricks entire career from his time as a photographer for Look Magazine to his final film Eyes Wide Shut. It includes records created during the making of his films, fan letters, correspondence, memos and equipment.

Tom Eckersley CollectionEckersley, a poster arts teacher, established the first graphic design course in Britain at the London College of Printing, a former incarnation of LCC. This commemorative collection contains his posters, magazine covers and original artwork that shows his work processes.

London College of Communication ArchiveThe collection contains materials relating the activities of the College and its predecessor bodies, from 1893 to the present day. A section of the collection features ephemera representing printing techniques and design trends. There are also printed materials relating to printing education and apprenticeships generated by the College, its predecessor bodies and external organisations for example, war time correspondence courses.

Research at LCC

Research at LCC aims to be world leading and offer a unique experience for research students across increasingly integrated networks and communities of practice. It is both informed by and informs innovation in the creative industries.

PARCThe UAL Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC) was established by UAL in 2003 and is based at LCC. The Centre commissions new and innovative research into photography and culture and organises seminars, exhibitions, study days, symposia and conferences, both within UAL and externally.

CRiSAPCreative Research into Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) is a research centre dedicated to the exploration of sound as an artistic practice. Their main aim is to extend the development of the emerging disciplinary field of sound arts by exploring notions such as composition, curation, archive, gender, practices of listening, voice and spoken word, technology and the relations between sound and the environment.

Language courses for all students

Free Academic English courses and tutorials are offered to students for whom English is an additional language. Evening modern language courses are available to all staff and students. Professional proofreading services are also available.

Work and funding opportunitiesStudent Enterprise and Employability (SEE)

Student Enterprise and Employability (SEE) is a new service helping UAL students and recent graduates (up to three years) to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential as future innovators, practitioners, employees and entrepreneurs. SEE offers a range of support services and programmes to help students and graduates grow their ideas and connect to opportunities and like-minded professionals.

When things go wrongAll students from time to time have issues they wish to resolve, from questions about where to get support to concerns about the quality of their experience.

The first point of contact is your Course Leader who will be able to resolve the majority of queries that you have.

A second point of contact is your student representative on your course or a member of the Students Union. You can contact the Students Union for confidential advice and support via their website: suarts.org/help/advice, or on 020 7514 6270.

Alternatively, you can seek advice to all issues and concerns through the LCC Information Centre, located next to the Reception desk. The staff in the Information Centre will be able to direct you to the full range of support and advice services, including the Universitys complaints processes and procedures. The LCC Complaints and Appeals Officer is Gareth Evans. You can contact Gareth via the Information Centre, or directly on 020 7514 6633 or [email protected]. Gareth will be able to advise you on our complaints and appeal processes and procedures as well as offering advice prior to submitting an Extenuating Circumstances form for consideration.

LCC is fully committed to resolving student issues promptly and we hope that by following this advice the majority of issues can be dealt with informally.

You can give general feedback on the quality of the student experience through your student representative at your Course Committee, the School Board of Studies, the Deans Forum held once a term or through the College Forum held once a year. If you wish to know more information about the nature and timing of these meetings please contact the Information Centre.
