RACER STUDY

Identify on your own effort the

visual landmarks, and navigation

direction!

GO!

TAKE A TEST!

With all the proper safety gear onboard,

practice the route from the ocean on your PWC.

Identify your landmarks for your navigation.

MEMORIZEThe zones you will be

Racing through inside of the Long Beach harbor.

If you cannot define these locations you

should not be racing in this event.

Safety is not a cheap word used casually. It is

an investment in your life! Your Responsibility.

How much are you worth?

LB2CAT PWC RACE

If you cannot identify all of the vital landmarks

covered in both directions you should not conduct a

channel crossing.

You simply are not prepared or safe.

You need to know how to operate a GPS, a Marine Band radio and carry on

board the federally required sound and signaling devices.

This is your responsibility do not make it somebody else’s to come find you.

Don’t be Stupid! Be Prepared

CORRECTTHE LONG BEACH HARBOR MOUTH ENTRANCE LIGHTHOUSE WILL BE ON YOUR LEFT AS YOU ENTER THE JAWS OF HARBOR MOUTH. IT LOOKS LIKE THIS (SQUARED) WITH FOUR COLUMNS OR PILLARS AS BASE AT THE END OF JETTY. Notice the ‘HEADLANDS in the distant background! You should be far away from the headlands off your port or left side.

INCORRECTTHIS IS THE SAN PEDRO HARBOR ENTRANCE, IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE AT THE WRONG ENTRANCE AND FAILED YOUR NAVIGATION! YOU NEED TO TRAVEL SOUTH TO THE NEXT HARBOR ENTRANCE. THE JETTY WALL ENDS AT A BEACH IN SAN PEDRO, YOU WILL SEE THE HEADLANDS VERY CLOSE AT THIS LOCATION. CORRECT YOUR DIRECTION. PROCEED TO THE QUEEN MARY AFTERWARDS ON PORT SIDE. YOU CAN DO THIS ON THE INSIDE OF THE HARBOR, OR FOLLLOW THE GUIDELINES.

As you near the island if there is no fog and you are miles away, you will begin to see the coloration of the south cliff face, a

beige color. And/or you may see the White Casino or red roof, OR you may see the white condos north of Avalon, or all of

them.

BE AWARE OF THE SHIPPING LANES COMING INTO PORT. THESE LARGE SHIPS CANNOT STOP FOR

YOU, PAY ATTENTION! They have the right of way you

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RAINFALL AND WATER CONTAMINATION

72 Hour Advisory:California State Health agencies recommend not to swim or surf 72 hours after rainfall due to coastal watersPolluted from urban runoff. Sewage or leaking pipes may be contributable factors. High concentrations fo bacteria may be present. Waters that are polluted may contain several different disease-causing organisms, commonly called pathogens. Enteric pathogens -- those that live in the human intestine - can carry or cause a number of infectious diseases. Swimmers in sewage-polluted water (or even just "normal" urban runoff) could contract any illness that is spread by migration and inadvertent ingestion of fecal-contaminated water. (AIDS and many other diseases are not carried by enteric pathogens.)

Viruses are believed to be a major cause of swimming-associated diseases, and are responsible for many cases of gastroenteritis, hepatitis, respiratory illness, and ear, nose, and throat problems. Gastroenteritis (commonly referred to as "stomach flu") , which can also be caused by bacteria, is a common term for a variety of diseases that can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, nausea, headache, and fever. Other microbial diseases that can be contracted by swimmers include salmonellosis, shigellosis, and infection caused by E. coli (a type of enteric pathogen). Other microbial pathogens found at varying concentrations in recreational waters include amoeba and protozoa, which can cause giardiasis, amoebic dysentery, skin rashes, and pink eye.

Toxic cocktail is a combination of pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and pollutants that may be in the water after a significant rainfall. Reference: http://www.nrdc.org/water/oceans/ttw/default.asp
