The Lazy Ranch is a multi-generation ranch property located in the historic Sweetwater River Valley, two miles
west of Jeffrey City, Wyoming. The ranch is bisected by State Highway 287/789, which follows the approximate
route of the early Emigrant Trails, a combination of the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails, that migrant
travelers used to cross the mid-section of what would become the State of Wyoming on their journey through
South Pass and on to their ultimate destinations of Oregon, Utah and California. These trails saw an estimated
500,000 migrant travelers pass through the region during the 30-year span between 1840 and 1870.
In close proximity to The Lazy Ranch are other historic landmarks — Independence Rock, Devil’s Gate, and
Split Rock — that emigrants used to help guide their parties through the valley. This corridor was also used by
the short-lived Pony Express (1860-1861) when transcontinental mail was carried by horse courier.

History
The Lazy Ranch was originally
owned by the pioneer Sheehan family
and was purchased by William P.
McIntosh in 1928. Mr. McIntosh’s
father, P. J. McIntosh, homesteaded
the nearby Hat Ranch in 1885 and was
one of the earliest settlers in the
Sweetwater River Valley.
Heirs of P. J. McIntosh have continuously ranched in the Sweetwater River Valley since 1885. The current
owners of The Lazy Ranch are the 3rd generation of McIntosh’s to own the property and are 4th generation
heirs of P. J. McIntosh.
The ranch is approximately:
98 miles southwest of Casper
68 miles northwest of Rawlins

Hunting & Fishing
The Lazy Ranch lies within two different deer hunt areas — Area 96 lies south of State Highway 287/789; Area
97 lies north of the highway. Both have general license seasons in mid-October for antlered mule deer or any
white-tailed deer. Area 97 also has a limited quota season for white-tailed deer during the entire month of
November.
The entire ranch lies within Antelope Area 106, which has a limited quota season for any antelope during late
September and early October; and a separate limited quota doe/fawn season during the same time period.
Elk inhabit the nearby mountains and occasionally cross The Lazy Ranch on their annual migratory treks.
Rainbow and Brown trout inhabit the Sweetwater River and numerous species of waterfowl frequent the
river valley.
With over two miles of Sweetwater River frontage and the associated river bottom habitat, The Lazy Ranch
provides a vast area of excellent natural environment for wildlife, fish and waterfowl.
