Layout of the HP Stream

Right-side

1. Power light a. When the light shows, the computer is on. b. When the light is blinking, the computer is in the Sleep state. c. When the light is off, the computer is off or in a Hibernations states.

*Hibernation is a power-saving state that uses the least amount of power.

2. Audio-out (headphone)/Audio-in (microphone) jack a. Connects optional speakers, headphones, earbuds, or a headset. b. This jack does not support optional microphone only devices.

3. USB 2.0 port a. Connects an optional USB device b. Examples: mouse, external drive, printer, scanner or USB hub.

4. USB 3.0 port a. Connects an optional USB device b. Examples: mouse, external drive, printer, scanner or USB hub.

5. HDMI port a. Connects an optional video or audio device a. Examples: high definition television, any compatible digital or audio component, or a

high-speed HDMI device.

Left-side

1. Security Cable Slot

a. Attaches an optional security cable to the computer

2. Power connector a. Connects an AC adapter

3. AC Adapter Light a. White: The AC adapter is connected and the battery is charged. b. Amber: The AC adapter is connected and the battery is charging. c. Off: The computer is using battery power.

4. SIM Card Slot (not available on this model)

5. Memory card reader a. Reads optional memory cards that store, manage, share, or access information.

Bottom Speakers – Produce sound






Display

1. Internal microphones a. Record sound

2. Webcam light a. On: The webcam is in use.

3. Webcam a. Records video and captures photographs. b. To use the webcam, from the Start screen, type camera, and then select Camera from

the list of applications.






Touchpad

1. Touchpad Zone – a. Reads your finger gestures to move the pointer or activate items on the screen.

2. Left Touchpad Button a. Functions like the left button of an external mouse

3. Right Touchpad Button a. Functions like the right button of an external mouse

Lights






1. Power light a. On: The computer is on b. Blinking: The computer is in the Sleep state c. Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation.

2. Caps Lock Light a. On: Caps lock is on, which switches all the keys to capital letters.

3. Mute Light a. Amber: Computer sound is off b. Off: Computer sound is on.

Power Button

1. When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. 2. When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate sleep. 3. When the computer is in Hibernation, press the button to briefly to exit Hibernation.






Keys

1. Escape 2. Function-Executes frequently used system functions 3. Windows- Returns you to the Start screen from an open app or the Windows desktop.

5. Dim Display Screen Brightness decreases the screen brightness

6. Increase Brightness on the Display Screen increases the screen brightness

11. Arrows Left Plays the previous track of an audio CD or previous section of a DVD;

12. Arrow Right with Parallel Bars Begins, pauses, or resumes playback of an audio CD or DVD

13. Arrow Right Plays the next track of an audio CD or the next section of a DVD.

14. Airplane Turn Airplane Mode on or off. When Airplane mode is on, wireless connectivity is not active.

On the Display Screen

1. Scrolling Useful for moving up, down, or sideways on a page or image. *Place 2-fingers slightly apart on the TouchPad zone and drag them up, down, left, or right.

2. 2-finger pinch Zoom 2-finger pinch zoom allows you to zoom out or in on images or text.

a. Zoom out-Place 2 fingers apart on the TouchPad Zone and then move your fingers together.

b. Zoom in-Place 2 fingers together on the TouchPad Zone and then move your fingers apart.






2-finger click 2-finger click allow you to make menu selections for an object on the screen. This is the same action as using right-click with the mouse to obtain menu such as Save As, and Print.

a. Place 2 fingers on the TouchPad Zone to open the options menu for the selected object.

Edge Swipes Edge swipes allow you to perform tasks such as changing settings and finding and using apps. Right-edge swipe Display and select a charm. Charms allow you to Search, Share, Start Apps, Access Devices, or Change Settings.






1. With your finger, swipe from the right-side of the TouchPad. 2. Scroll up or down to switch between the charms, and then select the charm you want to open.

Left-edge swipe The left-edge swipe accesses your recently opened apps so that you can switch between them quickly.

1. Swipe your finger gently from the left edge of the TouchPad.

Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 contains 3 main screens: 1. Desktop 2. Start screen - contains apps in the form of tiles. 3. App screen - shows all of your apps or programs in list form.

*You can switch quickly between the Start screen, Desktop, and the Apps screen.

Desktop On the desktop, you can use all kinds of apps and programs. You can also pin your favorite apps and programs to the taskbar, so you can get to them quickly. To get to the desktop, click the desktop tile on the Start screen Or

Press the Windows logo key +D on your keyboard.

Getting to the Start Screen 3 Ways to get to Start

1. Click on the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

2. Press the Windows logo key on your keyboard.

3. Open the charms (by sliding a finger from the right-side of the Touchpad), and clicking on Start.






Start Tip: When you are in desktop, you can right-click the start button to get to quick settings like Search, Shut down or Sign out.

Start Screen

App View Use the App View to see all your apps and to find all of your apps and programs.

From the Start Screen, click the arrow near the lower-left corner of the Start screen to view apps.

Search Search your PC, the web, OneDrive, Apps, and the Windows Store. You can search Everywhere, Settings, Files, Web images, and Web videos. To search your PC, the web, and OneDrive

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the Touchpad

2. Click Search To see all of the results for your search term, including all Web results:

1. Click the Search button 2. On the search results page, click a search result to open it.

To go back to the search results page: If you open a search result and find it’s not what you’re looking for, you can go back to the search results pages without having to search all over again.

The Start Charm You can use the Start charm to get to the Start screen at any time. Or if you are already on Start, use it to go back to the last app you were using. The Start Screen is the main page of your PC. The Start Screen is where you open apps and desktop programs, and get to your favorite websites and files.






The start screen is comprised of tiles. The tiles show updates and app notifications without even opening the app. The tiles are personalized based on the login of each person.

The Settings Charm Use the Setting charm to make quick adjustments to a few common settings like brightness, volume, or network connection. To adjust network connection:

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the Touchpad 2. Click on Settings

Or

1. Press the Windows logo key + C 2. Click on Settings

3. Click on the network connection icon 4. Select your Wi-Fi 5. Click Connect 6. If needed, the network security key code needs to be entered in order to connect.

To adjust speaker volume:

3. Click on the speaker icon 4. Adjust the volume by using the arrow keys on the keyboard or left-click with the mouse and

drag your finger across the touchpad.

To adjust display screen brightness

4. Adjust the brightness by using the arrow keys on the keyboard or left-click with the mouse and drag your finger across the touchpad

Shutting down (turning off) the computer 1. Save your work before shutting down your computer. 2. On the Touchpad, swipe from the right-side with your finger. 3. Click Settings 4. Click Power 5. Select Shut down

*It takes 12.45 seconds to restart the computer to get to the login screen.

1. Right-click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen. 2. Select Shut down or sign out. Or

1. Press the Windows logo key + C 2. Click Settings 3. Click Power 4. Select Shut down

If the computer is unresponsive and you are unable to use the preceding shutdown procedures, try the following emergency procedures in the following sequence:

1. Press ctrl + alt + delete. 2. Click the Power icon. 3. Select Shut Down. 4. Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds. 5. Disconnect the computer from external power.
