Welcome…

Maxwell Mearns finished an 8 week Alpha course at the end of March. Over the course of these weeks, we have been

exploring key aspects of the Christian faith. Following a deliciousdinner together each Sunday evening, we have watched and thendiscussed an Alpha film on topics such as the evidence that Jesuslived, died on a cross and rose again, the reasons for his crucifixionand resurrection, the Holy Spirit and how we can have faith in

Jesus. The Alpha film entitled “How Can I Have Faith?” showed an oil

painting called “The Light of the World” by William Holman Hunt(which is shown on the front cover). The painting is displayed in St Paul’s

Cathedral and has the following inscription based on the verses fromRevelation 3:

Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him,and will sup with him, and he with me.In the painting, Jesus is depicted with a crown of thorns and clad in a white robe and is knocking at an ivy-clad old door. The hinges and nails of the door are rusted through lack of use. The lantern held by Jesussheds light, bringing peace and hope. The door represents the door of someone’s life into which Jesus hasnever been invited. Jesus is knocking at the door and awaiting a response. Jesus wants to be invited in. Jesuspromises that He will come into our lives if invited. The crown of thorns is a reminder of Jesus’ suffering on the cross, which we remember on Good Friday eachEaster. By sacrificing Himself and dying on the cross, Jesus paid the price for all the wrong that we do in ourlives (sin). This sin creates a barrier between us and God as God is holy and just. Jesus takes the punishmentfor this instead of us because of the great love that He has for us. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate theresurrection of Jesus. Jesus defeated death so that we may have eternal life and a relationship with God,through Jesus. However, if you look closely at the painting, you will see that there is no handle on the door. This is to showthat we have a choice to make. It is up to us to open the door from our side and invite Jesus into our lives.Through Alpha, we have been exploring how to do this. We can respond to this great gift (Jesus sacrifice forus) by putting our trust in Him and turning away from the wrong in our lives. However,we are not left alone to navigate this journey of faith for ourselves as we have awonderful counsellor in the Holy Spirit, the Bible to read and learn more from, the power of prayer, attending and worshipping at Church and through this, thelove and support of a Church family. Our hope and prayer for our Alpha guests and everyone else seeking Jesus isthat you will invite Him in this Easter.
