Promoting the Club!

Derrick BarnettGeneral Manager

This year, as BallenIsles’ Members journeyfar and wide enjoying their usual summertimeactivities, they may be surprised to see that theBallenIsles brand has followed them on their

travels.A continued dedication to Club marketing efforts includes anintegrated marketing plan with greater reach and market penetrationthan ever before. The cable TV advertising that has already shownmeasurable success in local south Florida markets will shift to selectmarkets in the northeast, with placement scheduled during populartelevised tennis and golf events.Wherever you are in the world, youmay notice a BallenIsles image advertisement, digital banner orvideo promotion embedded in targeted websites as you are brows-ing the internet. Some print advertising is planned for Met Golferand Executive Golfer, in addition to the Troon Golf & Travel maga-zine. BallenIsles also benefits from listings in several Troon marketingvehicles and the Troon Privé Privilege reciprocal golf program fur-ther extends the reach of the Club brand to a worldwide luxurylifestyle audience.

Look out for BallenIsles in the news media too. After anothersuccessful season of strong public relations coverage, we hope togenerate tremendous pick-up of the second annual Junior CupTournament. Last year, this event was featured as a prominent tele-vised sports story by several local news stations, earned valuable printmedia coverage and secured a spot on the Reuters jumbotron inNew York’s Times Square. For those Members who may be worriedthat they might miss out on coverage, make sure you follow theClub on Facebook or via the BallenIsles Channel on YouTube.Wehave fully embraced the concept of integrated marketing - blendingthe best of traditional and emerging media to target and trackprospective members, and build awareness of BallenIsles.Performance metrics are constantly analyzed across a strong mix ofpaid, earned and owned media to ensure that every marketing dol-lar in the joint Club and BICA marketing budget is being used aseffectively as possible.

Building brand awareness and growing brand equity takes time, but we are confident that tangible progress is being made. BallenIsleshome sales are pacing 22% ahead of last year, while many compet-ing club communities are experiencing flat sales or even a decline intheir sales performance. In this pending election year, with volatileworld financial markets and a national economy that continues tostruggle, the local real estate market is not out of the woods yet. Asyou know, the Club and BICA recently announced a preferred realestate relationship with Waterfront Properties & Club Communitiesto assist in marketing and selling homes within BallenIsles.Waterfront Properties & Club Communities will utilize theirsophisticated marketing platform to aggressively promote BallenIsleslocally, nationally and internationally, building on the Club’s existingmarketing efforts. An on-site real estate office in the main

Clubhouse will be staffed seven days a week, providing professionalservices to prospective members and visiting realtors. The tools andtechniques utilized by Waterfront brokers are highly effective inmarketing and selling club properties across all price ranges in themarket.A commitment to a strong marketing mix is secured in thenew agreement including extensive internet marketing cross-linkedto the BallenIsles website, local newspaper advertising, direct mail, interactive media projects, and public relations. It is our intent toleverage the combined strengths of both organizations to create acompetitive edge in what we predict will continue to be a challeng-ing real estate market. Once again, Members are reminded that aBallenIsles resident may list their home for sale with any real estateprofessional from any company of their choice. The primary market-ing objective of the preferred real estate relationship is to increasethe overall number of sales leads, introducing more potential homebuyers interested in all real estate listings within the community.Once a prospect is introduced to the Club, new equity installmentplans have been designed to facilitate the membership purchase andprovide extra assistance to attract younger buyers.

Our professional interest in promoting the lifestyle advantages ofliving and playing at BallenIsles can be significantly advanced byyour personal testimonials. The key to building brand equity is estab-lishing a strong brand identity and communicating it consistentlyover time. The power of positive word-of-mouth cannot be under-estimated. Your voices have tremendous value in a business thatthrives on referrals. Together, we can build value in the BallenIslesbrand for the benefit of all residents and members.

During the months ahead, the Club staff will be engaged in sum-mer maintenance projects and planning for an exceptionalupcoming social and sporting season. Summer is a time when golfcourses are groomed for the coming winter season, including verti-cutting, aeration and general maintenance. Details of course closingsand a complete list of local clubs offering reciprocal privileges maybe found on the Club website.

We hope that you all enjoy the summer, wherever your travelsmay take you. Remember to keep your eye open for the BallenIslesbrand! For those of you who plan on relaxing and enjoying yoursummer fun here in south Florida, we promise to keep you enter-tained and look forward to seeing you often at the Club.

Living in the humid climate of South Florida puts individuals athigh risk for dehydration.

Dehydration is sweat-induced loss of body water. Activity thatcauses dehydration resulting in a loss of 1% to 2% of one’s bodyweight is sufficient to impair exercise performance. Dehydration ofgreater than 3% of body weight impairs bodily function andincreases the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death.

Prevention of dehydration during exercise is important to max-imize exercise performance as well as prevent heat injuries. Thefollowing are guidelines to avoid dehydration:

• Individuals should be well hydrated at the beginning of a roundof golf, exercise or outdoor activity. This can be achieved by drink-ing 14 to 20 oz. of fluid (water) within three hours prior to activity.

• Consume 5 to 10 oz. of fluid every fifteen to twenty minutesduring play, exercise or activity. The actual amount of drinkingshould be adjusted based on individual sweat rates and tolerancefor drinking during exercise.

• To determine one’s individual sweat rate during activity, weighyourself prior to activity and weigh yourself again immediatelyafter. Each pound of weight lost equals 8oz. of fluid loss (1lb=8oz).This will tell you how much fluid you need to rehydrate. If youremained hydrated you will not have lost any weight.

For hydration, water works best. Once dehydration hasoccurred, the National Athletic Trainers Association has found thatwell designed sports drinks are superior to water for rehydrationfollowing exercise.

Tennis Tip

Do you take a big back swing and hit a flat ball from mid-court?Big chance for error! The pros make an approach shot from mid-court look like a sure winner or very aggressive shot virtually everytime. Aside from the athleticism and amount of training involved, they typically use some amount of spin (usually topspin on a ball thatis struck from waist level up to about shoulder level). This allowsthem a full swing, with acceleration and control. When the Clubplayer attacks a shorter, high bouncing ball, they tend to take too biga backswing, and hit far too flat a ball for optimum control. As aresult, they have a bigger backswing than they can control hittinginto what is effectively a shorter court by 15-20 feet; not a goodcombination for success. To compensate, the player often deceleratestheir swing, losing yet more ability to control the ball off the rac-quet, or the player must hit the perfect ball at exactly the correctheight of clearance over the net to have a successful shot (the balleither hits the net or goes out).

The next time you approach a short, high ball with the intentof being aggressive, add a bit of spin if you have the capability, orshorten your backswing so you can still hit an attacking ball, butmaintain control and technique with a little less power, and stillallow yourself to accelerate your swing! Your success rate willclimb immediately, and boost your confidence on the shot!

MGA Makes Record Donation from One-dayFundraising Golf Event

The storied golf courses at BallenIsles Country Club, wheremany golf legends like Arnold Palmer originally qualified for thePGA Tour, have a new title – Host to the largest one-day-Golf-event fundraiser for the charity that bears Palmer’s name.

BallenIsles donated a record $86,000, beating the record it setlast year, to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). It’s the largestdonation from a one-day Golf event in the history of “battles” forArnie’s Army, Arnold Palmer’s unique fundraising golf challengethat benefits the PCF.

“It’s events like the one produced atBallenIsles that lead me to believe greataccomplishments will be rewarded with greatresults for the men in our world and we willfind a cure very soon! Dan Roberts, MarkFreeman and the BallenIsles Men’s GolfAssociation should not only be very proud

of what they accom-plished this year, butgrowing support overthe last three years, in

a difficult economy, speaks volumes about their desire to seeprogress made for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. On behalf ofthe millions men in the world suffering from this disease, I amtruly grateful,” said Chris Conway, PCF’s Director of Golf, SportsEnterprises.

Men’s Senior Golf Association(MSGA)by Ed Gilbert

The senior MGA continues to enjoy a hectic and successful sea-son with wide participation and an expanding roster of memberswhich can now be accessed online. Total membership approxi-mates 250 golfers who compete in friendly formats on a weeklybasis and generally allows for team competition as opposed toindividual contests. Every effort is made to provide for equitablecompetitive opportunity and the Knuth System has been the vehi-cle for parity.

Our dinner/dance held in March was a great success, with over200 members and guests enjoying an evening of food, drink andgood fellowship.

A presentation was made to SangHwang who is leaving BallenIslesafter 12 years to take a well deservedteaching position in NorthernVirginia. The plaque was presentedby President Dick Natalizio followingwhich, Sang responded with a mov-ing and heartfelt thank you to ourmembers. Needless to say, he will bemissed.

Our committee continues to discuss plans for an exciting pro-am event for next season being held to raise funds for the FirstTee charity. The format will allow our members to play with localpros who will volunteer their time for a worthy recipient.

Finally, I am pleased to report that Dick Natalizio was selectedto head our association for the following year by acclamation.
