We spend approximately 70% of our time in school, but some people think we need more time in school.

However, lengthening more hours for school days has some disadvantages for students and teachers.

First, students will lack private time if the school day is made longer.

Second, students can study by themselves at home, so they don’t need a longer school day.

Last, teachers will have to work longer—something that might make their work worse.

Despite these reasons, some still want to make the school day longer; I’ll explain why that’s a bad idea.

A hook should grab a reader’s attention. Not all books are valuable.

If someone were to ban a book, it would show how pathetic they are and will initiate a big fight.

Studies show that books with inappropriate language create violence.

Is it okay to restrict part of the First Amendment?

Does anyone expect the end of the world? (If I have to agree to ban books one day, I would do it when it’s going to be the end of the world.)

These hooks don’t quite work:Anytime! (Not enough information for us to understand how it connects to the thesis.)

Nowadays, technologies are spread all over the world. (Not related to the thesis.)

Books which have a lot of bad language should be banned. (Not a hook so much a big part of the writer’s thesis.)

A hook is related to your thesis, but a hook is not your thesis.

It is okay to ban books when they have bad

contents, such as violence.

THESIS…NOT A HOOK.

Make sure your supporting ideas directly support your thesis:

Thesis: It’s okay to ban books for middle school and below.

SI#1: First of all, children have an open mind and what they see might not be helpful for them.

SI#2: Furthermore, young students might focus more on graphic content than on the theme.

SI#3: Last, these kids would learn bad words they shouldn’t know.

One of these supporting ideas doesn’t quite work:

Thesis: It’s okay to ban books when they’re violent.

SI#1: First, these books can affect readers in bad ways.

SI#2: Second, they will waste a lot of the government’s money.

SI#3: Last, these books can impact society negatively.
