Lawn Cemetery Memorials

The Lawn Burial sections shown in this booklet currently have positions available for new

graves and reservations. While these sections are traditionally used for burials, the graves

can also accommodate cremated remains, allowing family members with different needs to

be together.

Each current section at the Wagga Lawn Cemetery has different memorial options to meet

different cultural, religious and personal preferences. In the following pages of this brochure

detailed information is supplied on the different sections and memorial options available.

Memorials are not included in the cost of burial or cremation.

WHY MEMORIALISE?

A memorial provides an enduring memory of someone who is no longer with us. It serves as

a focal point for families and friends to reflect on the life of their loved one.

It ensures future generations have a place to visit and remember those that have been

before them. A memorial creates a connection with history, an important sense of belonging

and identity.

NATURAL BURIALS

This section was developed in 2012 and includes plant species endemic to the local area.

Natural burials are also accepted at the four rural cemeteries managed by Wagga Wagga City Council, Uranquinty, Humula, Tarcutta and Currawarna.

The main principal of natural burial is that the body (or cremated remains) is prepared for burial or interment without chemical preservatives and a

simple shroud or biodegradable coffin is used. The body or remains are returned to the earth to decompose naturally.

In an attempt to keep the burial area as natural as possible there is no physical identification or memorial used at the site. Therefore there are no

headstones, vases or flowers placed at the burial site. Accurate maps and plotting data is recorded to ensure that future generations are able to locate

the place of burial.

BRONZE CONVERSION PLAQUE

Available in the following sizes –

380 x 280mm

559 x 305mm

A conversion plaque is an ideal choice if you wish to be interred with your loved one and share much of the same information, for example, surname

and children. Following the first interment, a base plaque is ordered with an inscription that includes common elements of the couple such as the

family name and names of decedents. At the same time details of the individual are included on the “first detachable plate”. This is supplied with and

fitted to the centre of the base plaque. When the second interment occurs the second plate is ordered, the first plate repositioned and the second

plate installed.

Design options are available including emblems, borders, plaque colour and the addition of ceramic photos. A conversion plaque can also be coupled

with a granite panel base in Section 10.

PERSONALISING BRONZE PLAQUES

There are many design options available to personalize your loved one’s memorial. The following are examples of some of the design options we

have available.

MOTIFS AND EMBLEMS

The appearance of a plaque can be enhanced by the use of motifs. There are two types of motifs available, Flat Relief and BAS Relief.

FLAT RELIEF: These motifs are created by the plaque manufacturer using design software.

Examples of Flat Relief motifs

BAS RELIEF: These motifs are sculptured by the plaque manufacturer in a three dimensional shape. The surface of the motif is highlighted in bronze

on the plaque resulting in a motif with depth and perspective.

Examples of Bas Relief motifs

PLAQUE BORDERS AND COLOUR OPTIONS

The border is the design that surrounds the bronze plaque. There are two types of borders available, Raised and Sculptured.

RAISED BORDERS: These are solid borders with a choice of corner designs

SCULPTURED BORDERS: These border designs are more elaborate and intricate and are selected to match the design or theme of the plaque.

There are also many options for background colour on bronze plaques. The background colour provides a contrast to the raised elements of the

plaque, including the inscription and motifs. The standard colour is dark brown (above left), but there are a choice of colours available, including dark

blue, dark green and maroon (as above).

For further information on design options please contact the Cemetery office.

OFFICE OF AUSTRALIAN WAR GRAVES

Office of Australian War Graves memorials can be placed in Section 3 and Section 10 at the Wagga Wagga Lawn Cemetery. The memorial is provided

and maintained in perpetuity by the Office of Australian War Graves for veterans of the Australian armed forces who die in war or conflict, or eligible

veterans who die after a war or conflict of causes related to their service in that war or conflict.

How to arrange the memorial?

Notify Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) when the veteran passes away. If the veteran is eligible for an official commemoration, DVA will

contact the Office of Australian War Graves (OAWG)

The Office of Australian War Graves will send information and a form to the next of kin, advising of the options available –

o Memorial in a cemetery or lawn cemetery – OAWG will arrange for the placement of a standard size single bronze plaque. In the

case of a second interment the veteran’s plaque cannot be moved or changed in any way. For this reason if the first interment

takes place in Section 3 if a second interment were to take place the OAWG memorial would need to be completely removed (with

permission) and replaced with a plaque paid for by the family. If the first interment takes place in Section 10 and an OAWG

memorial is placed in position, when the second interment takes place there is space for a second plaque of the same size to be

placed.

o Memorial in a crematorium – OAWG will arrange for the placement of the ashes in a wall niche or garden bed with a bronze plaque.

o Memorial in the Office of Australian War Graves Garden of Remembrance – A Garden of Remembrance memorial is provided as

an alternative to the lawn cemetery and crematorium options.

Complete the documentation in full and return to OAWG.

If you choose not to proceed with an OAWG memorial you may wish to have a Service Badge emblem included on the bronze plaque or granite panel.

Cemetery staff will apply for permission to use the Service Badge and will include this information in your memorial order.
