LAW 4 – THE PLAYERS’ EQUIPMENT 5. Slogans, statements, images and advertising AdditionaltextPrinciples• Law 4 applies to all equipment (including clothing) worn by players, substitutes and

substitutedplayers;itsprinciplesalsoapplytoallteamofficialsinthetechnicalarea• Thefollowingare(usually)permitted:

o theplayer’snumber,name,teamcrest/logo,initiativeslogans/emblemspromotingthegame of football, respect and integrity as well as any advertising permitted bycompetitionrulesornationalFA,confederationorFIFAregulations

o thefactsofamatch:teams,date,competition/event,venue• Permitted slogans, statements or images should be confined to the shirt front and/or

InterpretingtheLawWheninterpretingwhetheraslogan,statementorimageispermissible,noteshouldbetakenofLaw12(FoulsandMisconduct),whichrequirestherefereetotakeactionagainstaplayerwhoisguiltyof:• usingoffensive,insultingorabusivelanguageand/orgestures• gesturinginaprovocative,derisoryorinflammatorywayAnyslogan,statementorimagewhichfallsintoanyofthesecategoriesisnotpermitted.

Whilst‘religious’and‘personal’arerelativelyeasilydefined,‘political’islessclearbutslogans,statementsorimagesrelatedtothefollowingarenotpermitted:• anyperson(s),livingordead(unlesspartoftheofficialcompetitionname)• anylocal,regional,nationalorinternationalpoliticalparty/organisation/group,etc.• anylocal,regionalornationalgovernmentoranyofitsdepartments,officesorfunctions• anyorganisationwhichisdiscriminatory• anyorganisationwhoseaims/actionsarelikelytooffendanotablenumberofpeople• anyspecificpoliticalact/eventWhen commemorating a significant national or international event, the sensibilities of theopposingteam(includingitssupporters)andthegeneralpublicshouldbecarefullyconsidered.Competition rulesmay contain further restrictions/limitations, particularly in relation to thesize,numberandpositionofpermittedslogans,statementsandimages.Itisrecommendedthatdisputes relating to slogans, statementsor imagesbe resolvedprior to amatch/competitiontakingplace.
