Charger Pride Color RunBy: Jerry Depew

More than 120 people signed up for the Color Run for Charger Pride on July 8 in downtown Laurens. The runners raised a ton of money (yes--over $2000) in contributions from Charger boosters before race day. The weather was perfect. The course was five kilometers unless a runner took the short cut. Then it was three kilometers. All participants had completed the course in little over an hour. The main feature was the colored corn starch thrown overhead at the start of the race and also thrown at the runners along the course. Some got so excited that they rolled in the colorful corn starch that accumulated on the street. Charger Pride is a new independent booster club for the Laurens-Marathon school district. Allison Lund Price is president. The fitness group TuelShedTraining.com and local manufacturer Pengo purchased water for the runners.

At the Library

Well, of course I immediately said yes! Then came the hard part – we could only invite 8 kids! So last Tuesday was the big day. He showed up with his cameraman, a box of books and other supplies. The kids read books about metals (or were they just acting? They were so excited it was hard to tell!) Then they made boats with aluminum foil and tested them to see if they would float. When we discovered that they all floated, they started adding pennies for weight to see which style could hold the most weight. It was a really simple idea, but so much fun! The next hardest part is going to be waiting until the premiere next summer. I think we should have a viewing party, don’t you? Keep your eye out for a red carpet we can use! You’ve no doubt heard of the book “A Man Called Ove”? Well, it’s our Book Club choice for July. So stop and get a copy to see what everyone is talking about. Then join the discussion Monday, July 24th at 7 pm. Also welcome are readers who have already enjoyed that book! Have you heard all the talk of the upcoming solar eclipse? Did I tell you

I got a box of 1,000 pairs of viewing glasses? Well, we are starting to put some plans together for this. Corrinne Peterson, Pocahontas County Naturalist will be here Monday evening August 7 to give us all (kids and adults are all welcome!) some advance education. She will also be here the day of the eclipse, August 21st, around noontime and we will be doing something fun. More details to come, but mark the dates on your calendar!

At the Library with Glenda MulderJuly 19, 2017

Thanks to all who visited our “German Iowa and the Global Midwest” exhibit sponsored by Humanities Iowa and the University of Iowa. I think we all learned a few things from it! Next Wednesday (the 26th) Pockets Full of Fun puppets will be here at our regular summer reading time – 1 o’clock. Many of you have seen her shows over the years and know what a great job ventriloquist Lisa Laird will do to tailor her message to the Summer Reading theme, Build a Better World. She gets the kids in the palm of her hand right from the start. This show is fun for all ages, so adults are definitely invited to join us. There will be a puppet making workshop again this year after the show. We had a top secret mission last week. Dan Wardell called me a few months ago and asked if they could film a segment for Season 3 of his show IPTV Kids Clubhouse at our library.

Tim Read Visits the LibraryThese girls wanted to be sure to get front row seats when author, illustrator and comic Tim Read was at the Laurens Public Library. Tim is shown creating a three-eyed monster out of Morgan Leith’s scribble. Behind him you can see some of the drawings he had already created. Patrons in all 9 libraries in Pocahontas County enjoyed Tim’s programs July 12 & 13, thanks to a grant from the Pocahontas County Foundation.

Carter Nath ConcertThe Fonda Arts Center welcomes Carter Nath to the Arts Center for an afternoon performance on August 6, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Carter is an “under 20” musician with incredible talent, citing piano as his greatest passion in the music spectrum, but also proficient in acoustic, electric and bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and drums. We will be enjoying classical, as well as ragtime on the piano, and very possibly some guitar and singing. Carter lives in Algona where he is a pianist for First Lutheran Church, and St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, as well as substituting at various other locations in surrounding communities. Carter has participated in music competitions in the state, the most recent in March of this year, at the Terrace Hill Competition Senior Level where he placed third. In addition to playing and competing with the piano, Carter is a certified piano technician, and has been tuning pianos for over two years. Last November he bought out Bill Hobson’s Piano Tuning, based out of Algona, which he says has opened many doors to serve clients throughout north Iowa. You can learn more and listen to Carter on Facebook and YouTube, but nothing can compare to the live concert experience! We hope you can join us at the Fonda Arts Center, Fourth & Main in Fonda. As almost always, free admission, free refreshments! Everyone welcome!!
