The tory aurelburatReprintedfrom ~ a u r e l h u r s t Homes/ A onthlyfournaZ //publishedin fun lJ 2 by e d Murphy. was a scant quarter of a century ago that W.S.Ladd pioneer capitalist in selecting the finesttract of land he could find about Portland onwhich to place his herd of importedJersey cowsunconsciously picked out the site of Laurelhursttoday the most beautiful and aristocraticresidence district of Portland. The gently slopinggreen area that he enclosed within a mile and ahalf of the Willamette River became the famousHazelfern Farm noted not more for itswonderful cattle than for its unparalleled naturalbeauties. The beautiful Hazelfern Farm of 25 years ago isthe even more beautiful Laurelhurst of this day.

Now it is the very center of the East Sideresidence section yet set apart and foreverexclusive from surrounding territory by itsadvantage of position and location. And with allthis it is a mere 15 minute ride by [trolley]car tothe business center.Mr. Ladd Sr. was influenced in his choice ofHazelfern Farm we may suppose partly becauseit lay high and sightly along the top of a sort ofeasy plateau over 200 feet above the river and forits fine soil and sunlight and mild breezes. In thesultriest day of summer it is free from the grimeand dust and smoke of the city while a gentlenorthwest breeze brings cool and comfort. Furtherto the east the soil becomes gravelly and

Had the sturdy old pioneer banker sought toguide the future growth of the city he did somuch to develop when he set aside the land forthe Hazelfern Farm he could not by any chancehave chosen better. It is doubtful if there is anyhigh class residence district on the Pacific Coastthat in natural advantages beauty accessibilitylocation and all around desirability can compareto it; certainly there is none in Portland.Laurelhurst is by natural.endowment peculiarlyan ideal site for a suburb of fine homes. WhenW.S. Ladd laid it out as his Hazelfern Farm itwas veritably in the wilderness and the mile anda half to the city lay through forest and bycountry road.

last a hundred yearsEven then Messrs Murphy and Mead were notsatisfied until they had installed hundreds ofcluster lights making Laurelhurst s bright bynight s by day and the best lighted section inPortland As a final touch they imported fancyshade trees to plant in the parking betweensidewalk and streetAll told these improvements which transformedin one short year the Hazelfern Farm ofW SLadd into the modern Laurelhurst cost close to 2 000 000 . Added to this the owners had setaside a tract of 25 acres near the center ofLaurelhurst which the city later purchased tokeep forever s a city parkSince that time the progress of Laurelhurst hasbeen little short of astounding although it hadbeen foreseen by these gentlemen who had theforesight to see into what the Hazelfern Farmcould be made Already nearly 2000 lots havebeen sold Enough buildings have been contractedto bring the number of homes in Laurelhurst bythe end of 9l2 to 500.

Some of the most costly dwellings in the city havegone up here Among them is the fine residence ofCharles K Henry near the center of the tractwhich cost 40 000 . All told the amount ofmoney spent in home building will reach another 2 000 000 by the end of 9l2A pleasant feature of all this s that the demandfor houses has kept ahead of the supply Thosewho have invested in Laurelhurst are persons who

have invested that they may own their ownhomes The speculative buyer has been eliminatedalmost entirely from the outsetPractically all who have bought lots have done sowith the end in view of eventually building on forthemselves either with their own funds or bytaking advantage of the second mortgage privilegeallowed them by the owners of the tract by whichthey can obtain financial aid in building repayingthe same by easy monthly installmentsSo steady has the demand for building lots beenthat in the first four months of 9l 2alone

pl nting ov r rope eggy o t ~ ortland urseryCover crops are th e unsung heroes of th e garden multiple benefits for a minimum of laborlCover crops are fast--growing plants that are ideal forplanting thickly in bare areas o f t he garden: Newly-made garden beds, cleared annual beds or those now -empty vegetable beds that won t be planted untilnext year. T he leaves of th e growing cover cropprotect bare soil from being beaten into hardpan byth e fall and winter rains. The roots keep th e soilwell--draining and fine--textured.Cover crops are tilled into th e soil generally in th elate winter or spring) while they are still small andlong before they have th e chance to flower and go toseed. As they decompose they add an abundance oforganic matter and nutrients back into th e soil. Sucha relatively simple thing gives an amazing boost to

th e overall health and vitality of your gardenlWhile most cover crops are intended foroverwintering, if you find yourself with an emptybed you d like to keep fallow over th e summer, buckwheat is a good choice. The process is th e same, tilling it under while small and long before it goes toseed. There are several types of plant used for cover crops:clovers, ryes, legumes - used alone or incombination, depending on where they re used andth e desired results: Some specifically add nitrogento th e soil; some help prevent erosion on slopes;some can thrive even in heavy clay. And while mostcover crops prefer sun, there are some that areappropriate for shadier areas.Though it is late i n t he year, there are still manyvarieties that can be planted throughout t he m on thof November, some even into December: AnnualRyegrass, Austrian Peas, Dutch White Clover andFall Cereal Rye.

Forcertification, only 5of your yard should benaturescaped withnatives. That leaves 95for your dahlias, veggies, and other ornamentalfavorites.Does building backyardhabitat really work? YesLast spring, Audubonworked with faculty atPSU on a study todetermine the degree towhich the native foodweb is being restoredthrough communitybased restoration efforts. The preliminary resultsare no surprise; yards

oncernedNeighborNeighbors living on th e northern Laurelhurststreets of Multnomah Imperial, Senate,Wasco (among others) are aware of th e recentchange in congregation at what was once theChristian Science Church located at 3505 N EMultnomah. After purchasing th e church lastwinter, th e new tenants, Word of Life SlavicBaptist Church, have joined th e neighborhoodwith a congregation 650 strong, arriving in th eneighborhood for services twice each Sunday. The few spaces in th e church's lone parking loton N E Imperial behind th e Breslin WallaceService Center are inadequate to serve asignificant portion of th e current congregation.W h a t results is th e use on Sundays of virtuallyall street parking spaces available within a 500foot radius and a fairly significant impact onneighborhood livability. At a Senate Streetblock party this past summer th e parking impactof th e new congregation was a much repeatedtopic of conversation.Recently th e Word of Life Church has appliedfor Conditional Use approval to build an 8,000square foot two story addition t o t he existingchurch. The proposed new school and officebuilding would be sited on th e now vacant lotEast and South of th e church on N EMultnom ah. I n speaking to many neighbors inth e immediate area of th e church, th e commonconcern is that this new structure will precipitatean increase in th e congregation size at th e church, causing additional parking problems and furtherstress on th e neighborhood's transportationsystem. Christmas is coming. Make sure you do no toverload circuits by having too many strings oflights on one circuit. The newer mini lights don tpull much current. However th e older largerbulbs can pull as much as 7 wat ts per bulb. Wh e nyou hook strings together th e first string willcarry th e load of all th e strings added to it.Finally if you use a wood burning fire place orstove have th e chimney checked and cleaned ifnecessary. If you clean out th e ashes pu t in metalcontainer and place on concrete driveway or patio.Do no t place on wood deck or close t o t he house.

Some people use space heaters on cold nights.Electric heaters pull a lot ofAmps. Make sureth e extension cord will handle th e load. If th ecord is warm or hot get a heavier cord. Checkextension cords and appliance cords for wear andtear. If th e cord is frayed or has cracks in itreplace it. Also do n ot r un electric cords under th ecarpet. When using portable heaters make sure they areno t close to curtains furniture or otherflammable materials. Many people use candlesfor decoration or ambience. Wh e n placingcandles make sure there is enough clearance overthem. I f in doubt hold your hand over th e candleat t he height in question. If hot move candle.Make sure candles are away from curtains thatma y blow over candle. Keep candles high. A childor happy dog with a big tail can knock a candleoff a coffee table. Candles do no t always go outwhen they are dropped. If it rolls under furnitureyou have a problem.

y el entzWinter and cold weather is around th e corner. Now is th e time to do a safety check. Home firesincrease during th e winter months. Most deathsfrom home fires are caused by smoke. Earlydetection is critical. A fire can double in sizeevery 30 seconds.Yo u should have a working smoke detector onevery floor and every bedroom. Check detectorsevery 6 months. Replace batteries as needed orevery 5 years. Have a fire extinguisher on eachfloor. Know how to use it. Think IIPASS . Pullth e pin im at th e base of th e fire Squeeze th ehandle and Sweep back and forth.

    President perspectiveBy Eric Fruits, President

It s hard to believe that theyear is drawing to an end andthat this is the last newsletterof the year. Even though weare sliding into holiday season, the all.-volunteer LaurelhurstNeighborhood Association

keeps on going. With the last of the leaves falling off our trees, most Laurelhurst residents have at least one moreleaf pick.-up day ahead of them. Make sure to moveyour cars so the sweepers can do their work. It d bea shame to pay for leaf pick 'up only to throw it allaway because you or your neighbor left their car onthe street. To see what day your leaf pick.-up is,visit www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/55380, or just Google llPortlandLeaf Day schedule. One benefit of losing our leaves is that now it'seasier to see the new Laurelhurst Neighborhoodsign caps throughout the area. There has beenoverwhelming interest in getting more. NeighborMike DiBlosi will be working with the city to buyand place more signs. At this time, the estimatedcost would be $l50 a sign ( 75 for the sign and 75to the city for installation). If you are interested inbuying a sign for your corner, email Mike [email protected] last note on trees. As I have to face the sadprospect of taking out three dead and dying treesin my yard, I can look forward to the next Friendsof Trees planting on January l8, 20l4. If you wantto participate in this fun and low 'cost way to get atree, sign up on the Friends ofTrees website byDecember l6, 20l3, friendsoftrees.orglplant.-it.programs.Word of Life Slavic Baptist Church at 3505 NE
