Launch of the “Alliance of Severo Ochoa Centres and

Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence”

• The Secretary of State for R&D+i, Carmen Vela, chaired the kickoff meeting of the new Severo Ochoa and Maria Maeztu Alliance of Excellence.

• The alliance’s target is to internationally promote and strengthen the centres

and units accredited with this distinction, to give their research a higher profile.

The 25 centres and 16 research units accredited with the “Severo Ochoa” and “María de Maeztu” excellence distinctions formally established this afternoon the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Alliance (SOMMa) in their first official meeting. Chaired by the Secretary of State for R&D+i, Carmen Vela, the gathering was attended by directors and representatives of all centres and units that have approved creation of the Alliance and defined the strategic and working plan for the coming months.

The Spanish “Severo Ochoa Centres” and “María de Maeztu Units” Excellence Program promotes excellence in scientific research. Their goal is to promote Spanish science through the recognition of research efforts at the forefront of their fields, help them increase their impact, and international scientific leadership and competitiveness.

“Excellence attracts excellence, and therefore this alliance is another step toward generating synergies and strengthening the quality of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centres and research units,” states Carmen Vela, Secretary of State for R&D+i. “The future of impactful research and innovation in Spain and Europe lies in the convergence of technologies, methodologies and disciplines, capable of carrying out ambitious projects performed in cooperation among centres, units and teams from different organisations. This alliance is a major step forward in this direction, as it will let us strengthen the links of cooperation among existing research centres and units that we have in Spain,” says Vela. The excellence program is one result of the consolidation. The Severo Ochoa centres and María de Maeztu units propose reaching new lines of cooperation with the creation of the Alliance of Severo Ochoa and Maria de Maeztu Centres of Excellence (SOMMa). Luis Serrano, director of the Centre for Genomic Regulation, will head the alliance over the next two years, while Teresa Garcia-Milà, director of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics will be its vice-president.

“In science, alliances are always positive. Joining forces at all levels enriches the R&D+i ecosystem,” explains Luis Serrano, director of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and president of the new SOMM Excellence Alliance. According to Serrano, “We hope that this union of centres and units of excellence in Spain will generate a long-term synergetic effect, and will have an exponential impact on talent recruitment and the advancement of research in Spain and beyond our borders. Such projects are fundamental to guarantee stimulating, creative environments of excellence.” SOMMa aims to raise the national and international profile of science in Spain; promote the exchange of knowledge, technology and best practices among its members, the international scientific community and the main stakeholders; cooperating with other research centres in Spain to strengthen the R&D+i system; and having a voice in Spanish and European science policy. Ready for first actions SOMMa will have a number of working groups to achieve its goals. Among them are raising the profile, increasing cooperation, furthering scientific policy, results dissemination or project sustainability, among others.

Soon, the www.somma-excellence.es web platform will bring together all of the information on SOMMa. This website, in addition to being a window into the world of the science of excellence being conducted in Spain, will also be a unique resource for the scientific community, policy makers, journalists and the general public.

Another of SOMMa’s activities is the organization of future runnings of the 100xCiencia conferences, thus continuing the series that began in 2015 in La Palma, the second running of which will be held in Alicante on November 2 and 3. The SOMMa centres and units will meet again in this second running of 100xCiencia which, under the title “Co-creating Value in Scientific Research”, will be focused on the transfer of knowledge generated in the centres and research units, and facilitating society’s appreciation of its value. Nace la Alianza de centros y unidades de excelencia Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu

• La Secretaria de Estado de I+D+i, Carmen Vela, ha presidido la primera

reunión de la nueva Alianza de Excelencia Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu.

• El principal objetivo de la alianza es promover y fortalecer internacionalmente a los centros y unidades acreditados con esta distinción, así como dar mayor visibilidad a la investigación que realizan.

Los 25 centros y las 16 unidades de investigación acreditados con las distinciones “Excelencia Severo Ochoa” y "Excelencia María de Maeztu" han formalizado esta tarde la creación de la Alianza Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu (SOMMa) en su primera reunión oficial. Presidida

por la Secretaria de Estado de I+D+i, Carmen Vela, la reunión ha contado con directores y representantes de todos los centros y unidades que han aprobado la creación de la Alianza y definido el plan estratégico y de trabajo para los próximos meses.

El Programa Español de Excelencia de "Centros de Severo Ochoa" y "Unidades María de Maeztu" promueve la excelencia en la investigación científica. Su objetivo es impulsar la ciencia española mediante el reconocimiento de los centros de investigación de vanguardia existentes, así como ayudarlos a aumentar su impacto, y liderazgo científico internacional y la competitividad.

“La excelencia atrae excelencia, por lo que esta alianza es un paso más para generar sinergias y reforzar la calidad de los centros y unidades de investigación Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu”, asegura Carmen Vela, secretaria de Estado de I+D+i. “El futuro de la investigación y de la innovación de impacto tanto en España como en Europa está en la convergencia de tecnologías, metodologías y disciplinas, capaces de desarrollar proyectos ambiciosos realizados en colaboración entre centros, unidades y equipos de distintas instituciones. Esta alianza es un paso importante en esta línea al permitir fortalecer los vínculos de colaboración entre los centros y las unidades de investigación excelentes que tenemos en España”, afirma Vela. Fruto de la consolidación de este programa de excelencia, los centros Severo Ochoa y unidades María de Maeztu se proponen alcanzar una nueva vía de colaboración con la creación de la Alianza de centros y unidades de excelencia Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu (SOMMa). Luis Serrano, director del Centro de Regulación Genómica, presidirá la alianza los próximos dos años y Teresa Garcia-Milà, directora de la Barcelona Graduate School of Economics será la vice-presidenta. “Las alianzas en ciencia siempre son positivas y aunar esfuerzos a todos los niveles enriquece al ecosistema de I+D+i”, afirma Luis Serrano, director del Centro de Regulación Genómica (CRG) y presidente de la nueva Alianza de Excelencia SOMM. “Esperamos que esta unión de centros y unidades de excelencia en España dará lugar a un efecto sinérgico a largo plazo y tendrá un impacto exponencial en la captación de talento y en el avance de la investigación en España y en el extranjero. Este tipo de iniciativas son fundamentales para garantizar entornos estimulantes, creativos y de excelencia”, concluye Serrano. SOMMa persigue incrementar la visibilidad nacional e internacional de la ciencia en España; promover el intercambio de conocimientos, tecnología y buenas prácticas entre sus miembros, la comunidad científica internacional y las principales partes interesadas; colaborar con el resto de centros de investigación en España para fortalecer el sistema de I+D+i; y tener voz en la política científica española y europea. Listos para llevar a cabo las primeras acciones SOMMa contará con diversos grupos de trabajo para conseguir sus objetivos entre los que se encuentran, por ejemplo, mejorar la visibilidad, la colaboración, la política científica, la divulgación de los resultados, o la sostenibilidad del proyecto, entre otros.

Próximamente, el portal www.somma-excellence.es recogerá toda la información acerca de SOMMa. Esta página, además de ser una ventana al mundo de la ciencia de excelencia que

se está llevando a cabo en España, también será un recurso único para la comunidad científica, responsables de política científica, periodistas y el público general.

Otra de las acciones de SOMMa será la organización de las futuras ediciones de las conferencias 100xCiencia, continuando así la serie que empezó en 2015 en La Palma y que este año celebrará su segunda edición en Alicante los días 2 y 3 de noviembre. Los centros y unidades de SOMMa se encontrarán de nuevo en esta segunda edición de 100xCiencia que, bajo el título “Co-creating Value in Scientific Research”, se centrará en la transferencia del conocimiento que se genera en los centros y unidades de investigación y su puesta en valor de cara a la sociedad.
